Though I expected as much to be true, it's still somewhat disheartening to have confirmation that the "traditional" wedding anniversary gifts (beyond the original 25th silver and 50th gold) were created by the American National Retail Jeweler Association. Ah, commercialism.
(For the curious, 25 and 50 likely originated in medieval Germany. If a couple lived to celebrate those anniversaries, the wife was presented with a wreath of the requisite material by her friends and neighbors. No mention of the husband in this tradition is noted.)
