"What have we learned? Delusion is an idea, that an idea can be contagious..."
David was born to Charles and Gabrielle Xavier, but when he was an infant his father gave him to the Haller family to raise as their own. It was supposed to be a nice, normal life, free of the burdens that come with being the son of a powerful mutant. It didn't work out that way at all.
Farouk, the Shadow King, the Demon with Yellow Eyes... it didn't matter what name David knew him by. What mattered was that he clung to the infant like the parasite he was. He frayed at the edges of a mind that was already fragile, driving the young boy over the edge. As a young man, David turned to drugs and alcohol to numb the voices in his head. That still didn't stop his powers from bursting forth uninvited, and after a girlfriend broke up with him after seeing the aftermath of an uncontrollable outburst David tried to hang himself.
"...that humans are pattern-seeking animals by which I mean, we prefer ideas that fit a pattern..."
He was institutionalized after his suicide attempt; it was there that he met Syd Barrett and fell in love at first sight. She didn't want to be touched, but that ways okay. They found ways to be together anyway. When an
incident resulted in him being released from the institution instead of Syd, Division Three found both of them and brought them into the fold.
Over the course of his adventures, David found out about his parasite, and about his father. It turned out, David wasn't just a powerful mutant... he was as sick as everyone had said he was all along, his mind corrupted by Farouk's influence. He realized that the only way to really save himself, and everyone he loved, was to unmake the world where they were together and create a new one where David Haller was never touched by the Shadow King. Where they would go on with their lives without him, and better for it.
