The freenet is a city-wide wifi network -- sans the Internet as we know it -- that survivors use to communicate via message board, call, or text. Freenet users create their own usernames to log in with when they sign up for the Freenet, so a character does not have to post under their real name if they don't want to.

When posting to the Freenet, please specify whether you are posting a text or a public/private message board post.

Citizens of Austin,

A few notable announcements today.

It is my supreme displeasure to On behalf of our intrepid researchers from Denver, I have been asked to extend the opportunity for immune citizens to apply to assist with research efforts. Please note that these citizens will be entrusted with the retrieval of live undead specimens, and thus all applicants must undergo a rigorous physical examination and combat assessment in order to confirm their readiness.

On April 5, 2020, we will be holding a special election in order to elect one representative and two senators to Congress. It is my personal feeling that it's about time we have representation in our government again.

Lastly, please note that taxes did not die with the rise of our new world normal. Our due date is delayed significantly to October 15, 2020, all things considered, but such things are an inevitability of federal assistance and involvement. I look forward to having Texas representatives play more of a role in our government, as mentioned above.

Yours,
Mayor Nina Clarke
Austin, Texas

Ms. van Eeden will no longer be working in the government, effective immediately.

In other news, a special election is scheduled for 4/1/20 in order to choose Texas Members of Congress. We will discuss this in our next series of meetings.

Citizens of Austin,

Our office is pleased to announce that due to the securing of our city borders, the hard work of our soldiers to reduce zombie population, and the increased vigilance given by our APD, Austin's curfew will be moved from 7PM to 9PM. This change is effective beginning January 5, 2020.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office.

Yours,
Mayor Nina Clarke

All,

Please see the attached documentation Ms. van Eeden received from Denver this morning. It details the current water grid throughout the United States as well as the need to supplement with additional resources when able. We have untapped water resources within our city limits as well as opportunities to leverage local rivers, lakes, and eventually Texas coastline.

I have indicated in yellow the section that proposes the connection between our downtown water plant and that of Tulsa's and then, in purple, the proposal regarding the spring within the Greenbelt district. If we accept the proposal to leverage the spring for city and national water supply, utility buildings will need to be built on the site marked in green, located in the center of the district. The district's borders will be shifted accordingly and compensation will be provided to the city and district. We'll lose access to a natural recreational area, though there are many more within the region that we can look to reclaim, and any citizens still living in the indicated region will need to find new housing with the assistance of government funds.

We need five votes in favor of this proposal in order to move forward. I will vote on this measure myself.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Yours,
Mayor Nina Clarke
Austin, Texas

Hey Austin,

The Santa Competition went off amazingly and was a great first fundraiser for the Orphanage, so thank you to everyone who came out and showed support for the event and the orphanage! Dr. Whelan has asked me to help them with new fundraising ideas that could happen throughout the year, which I'm extremely excited about. So far a few ideas have been discussed now we’re looking for public opinion on which would hold more interest and/or have more items donated.

Both are auctions of a sort.
  • The first idea was a date auction, though this would require people to be willing to spend an evening with a possible stranger.

  • The second idea is a silent auction. This one would require donations from local businesses of goods or services.

  • I’ve seen both done extremely well and been very successful. So tell me Austin, which would hold your attention more or earn your support?

Hello Austin! Or should I be saying howdy? My name is JJ and I'm an Army Chaplain. I've been cleaning up St. Mary's Cathedral and though the place is still looking a little rough, I'll be hosting Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services for anyone who is interested. From what I've heard there aren't any churches here yet, so it seems I got here just in time!

So... as a newcomer to Austin where should I go and what should I do? Throw the new guy a bone!

    Citizens of Austin,

It is my pleasure to announce the results of what I have been told is the first annual Austin, Texas Santa Competition. Though the temperatures may not fall quite so steeply as they do in other parts of our country, my heart is warmed by the holiday spirit and generosity that you all have shown today. As you know, all proceeds from today's event will go towards the establishment of our city orphanage.

With 29.84% of the total city votes, the Capitol district's Santa Claus, Commissioner Isaac Callahan, has won this year's contest. All Capitol citizens will receive a coupon for 20% off any purchase at the newly-reopened Barton Creek Square and Cinema to commemorate the occasion.

I am also honored to announce that the Greenbelt district's Santa Claus, Mr. Max Mendelson, has also clinched victory as a "fan favorite" Santa Claus. All Greenbelt citizens will receive a coupon for 10% off any purchase at the Barton Creek Square and Cinema as well.

I wish you all a happy holiday season. For those who are looking for ways to spend their new coupon, I hear that National Lampoon's Zombie Holiday Hideaway is quite good.

From the desk of Isaac Callahan,

    Interim Mayor of Austin

    Two additional notes:

    2. If for some (absurd) reason you wish to withdraw your candidacy, please send me a private message.

Greetings Austin! My name is Beau, I'm a new schoolteacher in town and I'm looking for a few businesses, offices, or individuals that would be willing to host some field trips for some very energetic, very eager-to-learn preschoolers. I know having 10-15 little munchkins running around a place of business might not be everybody's cup of tea but if I could get a few of you to humor me, I'd love for my students to be able to experience Austin in a fun and educational way! If you have any questions about what the field trips would entail, or are yourself looking for a preschool or daycare for your own kids, please feel free to reply to this post, or shoot me a private message at your earliest convenience.

Unrelated but equally important, I heard there was a place called The Bar that was looking for part time work but when I dropped by it didn't seem like anybody was home? Did it shutter its doors or did I just drop in at a bad time?

Last thing, I swear. Anybody out there do alterations or tailoring? There's something about this Texas air that's got my three kids growing like weeds. I swear the oldest has shot up half an inch since we've moved here, and it's only been 2 days. If there was somebody who was handy with a needle and thread I'd love to throw some hems their way to be let down.

Sorry this post became a sort of "catch all" to all of my newcomer problems...it's the first time I've had more than two minutes to myself since we got to Austin and if I don't get it all my questions out in one fell swoop who knows when I'll have the chance next?

    Citizens of Austin,

As we begin to move forward from the tragic incidents experienced during the September 2019 events, our office is nearing the completion of its investigations. Our intent has been to determine probable causes, identify known and likely catalysts, and create plans for prevention.

We know that as the days pass and people fall to the virus, we are losing important and loved members of our community. Know this is not something that I or this office takes lightly. The nature of our world today is such that blanket promises cannot be made, but our goal is to honor their lives with improved prevention, security, and city-wide strength.

We have been in contact with state and city heads from other regions within the United States as well in order to learn more about and identify best practices. Barricade reconstruction and reinforcements continue in earnest and the information we've gathered has led to an improved understanding of the nature of the zombie virus and how it spreads.

I invite all citizens to contact me directly via this Freenet post if you would like to learn more about next steps.

    Yours,

    The office of
    Mayor Nina Clarke

    Citizens of Austin:

Emergency staff have been hard at work over the last day to identify the cause of the three separate zombie incidents at the University of Texas campus, University Medical Center Brackenridge, and the UMCB District. Initial investigations have proven inconclusive and our office will share more information with the public when able.

Please note that zombie populations throughout unincorporated Austin appear to be increasing. Emergency barricades have been constructed around all incorporated districts, but we urge you to take extra precaution when able and travel only when necessary. As in prior months, available soldiers will provide escort as needed.

Our thoughts are with those affected by yesterday's loss of life and the individuals waiting through quarantine at this time.

It occurs to me now that since the interview project is now sponsored by the Department of Vital Communications, we ought to show a little bit more of our side of the story. I value the insight the interviews have given us, especially the features that focused on those on the cusp of society during the city's previous era, but there's only been one interview that focused on someone who had been a part of Austin's main society. I would think there should be balance in order to avoid bias.

I encourage you all to sit for an interview, and I will do the same.

    Citizens of Austin,

I write to you today to provide clarification on today's events.

Many of you in the LBJ and UMCB Districts have reported hearing faint gunshots within the last hour, coming from the northern portion of unincorporated Austin. This was the result of a clash between our police force and the remaining rogue outlaw suspects who purported a continued association between themselves and the Hellhound motorcycle club.

We are pleased to share that the Austin Police Department successfully contained the suspects and they are now in custody within La Quinta.

Please note that our administration has once again confirmed that the members of the Hellhound motorcycle club, who are all registered citizens of Austin, Texas, are committed to upholding the law and are well aware of the consequences they -- or any other lawless citizen, Hellhound or not -- would experience should they step outside the law.

We continue to advise precaution on our city streets, though we express optimism that for now, the sole threat remains the undead.

    Yours,

    The Government of
    Austin, Texas
