The loss of life and talent is always so sad. The world is much darker and less lovely for the death of someone with the talent of Ms. Vane.

I cannot help but feel as if I have been here before, as if I have felt the echoes of death so many times that I could almost consider them a friend. I have not known many who have died, I am very fortunate to say. There is nothing joyful, nothing pure nor beautiful in death. And yet there is a part of me that, as much as I loathe to speak of it, is almost too used to this sensation. I feel sadness, but it is not as acute as it should be. Perhaps it is just that I did not know Ms. Vane very well. That must be it, there is no other explanation.

Whatever the case, I am currently taking a break from painting a portrait of Ms. Vane, to commemorate and celebrate her life. It feels the only right thing to do.

I'm unsure what prompted this but I think that I may paint more. It's unlike anything else I've ever done.

I'm guessing the timer is probably proving a source of anxiety for some if not all of us. How is everyone holding up?

Now that I've had a moment to get settled in and familiarized with the system of governing here and the law of the land, as it were, I thought it best to first introduce myself to those of you who I've been placed with. I do hope that we'll all be very good friends.

I'm J'mon Sa Ord and I hail from a desert city called Ank'harel on the continent of Marquet in a realm known as Exandria. Those of you already familiar with Vex'ahlia de Rolo may be somewhat familiar with this realm as well as I know her and her compatriots quite well. I have served as ruler of Ank'harel and unofficial ruler of Marquet as a whole for many years, though I hardly think that matters much here. But one does like to know what one's new friends do for a living.

Marquet is largely desert - over seventy percent - with scattered mountainous regions and small oases making up the rest of the area. I'm exceptionally curious, a lover of language and books, of interesting people, and above all else, of conversation. So, please, don't hesitate at all to make yourselves a bother. I'm quite looking forward to getting to know everyone.

I was told my sister was here. Vex'ahlia. Good with arrows and prone to winking. She might have a bear with her.

Also, not to be ungrateful for the fourth second chance at life, but what the fuck is this place? I expected the Shadowfell and I got something that looks like Percy's lab got lucky with Scanlan's mansion and puked up another realm the morning after. Which isn't the worst morning after, but it's weird. This is weird, right? That's not just me?

I know we're all still trying to recover from the feelings of loss and hurt that arose over the course of the last experiment, and understand that there is still plenty to process, even beyond these trials. But I think we also have to talk about this in terms of the experiment we're all a part of. Because it's now quite clear they mean to make the stakes higher, and we cannot assume going forward that any deaths or injuries will be temporary - even though these appear to have been.

So. The plan shaping up among the last list of people we had to work with was resistance through passive non-performance. I think it's the only real option we have. There are some of you I wouldn't normally cooperate with, but at this point, I imagine we're all kind of ready to hold our noses. We all have people we want to keep safe. Can we put aside the urge to put the well-being of our personal friends over the common good, which is what got us into this mess in the first place, and make an agreement? None of us benefit from the tribalism and selfishness that got us here. Let's just do this.

I've been trying to work out all day whether this is heaven or hell. I'm still undecided, by the way. If it's heaven, why aren't Bri and Julie and Mom and Dad here and if it's hell - well, I deserve it.

I know I have not made a public statement since my appointment, and I want to make it clear that I have no intention of using my position except where necessary. When things are going well, I hope you don't have to hear from me at all. Those that wish to contact me for any reason are welcome to do so.

However, the cancellation of today's training sessions marks the inevitable- we are soon due for another experiment.

I hope those that needed it took advantage of the classes to better prepare for what lies ahead, and I thank Sam Wilson for requesting them on our behalf. I know there are some concerns that have been raised about the nature of the next scenario, and I will not repeat such speculation here. I do not believe it is productive to rile up panic or hype up unknown threats. It is outside of our control, but we will do our best to respond appropriately when the time comes.
