I have felt such inspiration lately, and particularly a desire to experiment.

I'm unsure what prompted this but I think that I may paint more. It's unlike anything else I've ever done.

Don't listen to him. It's an excellent use of color and expression of movement, Halward.

A man who cannot appreciate or distinguish between the myriad of shades has no business looking at or critiquing art.

Anyone who believes color and movement are enough to make a piece noteworthy or admirable has no business forming the minds of the next generation. I shudder.

If you were around during the days of cave art, somebody would have bashed your head in with a great stone. That would have been admirable color and movement. You're lucky I'm far too polite for such things.

Thank you, miss. I understand that sometimes there are those who who not find art appealing for whatever reason. Beauty is, to some extent, subjective, of course, but I do make a habit of pursuing it. I would just appreciate a comment beyond 'hm'.

Hartwright. I am the art professor at the university. Bennington is merely a man who has too much opinion for things he has no talent in himself.

Basil Hallward, though you seem to know that already. It is a pleasure.

He seems to have some insight into the subject, I appreciate his comments, forceful as they may be.

I like to keep track of my contemporaries. Perhaps I can see more of your work? I think it'd be inspiring to show to my new students.

Bennington has very little time for anything innovative or new. Do not allow the words of one tedious critic hold back your vision.

Of course! Much of it is at my home, at [address]. Or I could bring a collection to your offices, if you like. Whichever is preferable for you.

I do not. Not everyone, even those informed in art, can understand the purpose behind that which I create. All I seek to do is capture the loveliness of the world, and the innocence of it.

I wouldn't want to trouble you bringing it all the way to the university, unless you'd allow for a few pieces to be displayed there. I could pay for the rental of a few works.

You do a magnificent job, and I think beauty can be appreciated by all those who open their minds to it. Unlike our friend, whose mind is quite closed.

It is never any trouble for me to share my art! I couldn't request payment, it is simply a joy to share it Art and joy cannot pay the rent, Basil I would be much appreciative, but before we get ahead of ourselves perhaps you should see my work first.

There are some who are, unfortunately. But it is good that he does not keep his opinions secret. Secrets can be more painful at times than any physical wound could bring.

I haven't said that. I was considering it.

Some people do that, before they offer an opinion. I know it's considered old-fashioned, but - what can I say. I'm a slave to convention.

Being old fashioned is a bit dull, though I suppose there's nothing wrong with it in the end. I certainly am a bit old fashioned in some respects.

Discounting the past and it insights, accomplishments, and infinite wisdom as dull is the very kernel of the problem with art - I use the term loosely - which prizes innovation over all else. I appreciate the accuracy with which you have captured your subject; the stillness it communicates in motion. Technically it is wonderfully adept. I wonder, though, what its instructive value might be. Perhaps I simply can't see it.

I agree, art that promotes innovation, or worse, self exploration and biography, is not art as far as I'm concerned. Art is about beauty and capturing that beauty. I appreciate your compliments.

Does art need to have instructive value to have worth? I do not think so. The beauty of it, the purity of that beauty, is what matters.

I believe the instructive purpose is the very core of artistic value. Those who would have us believe that morality and virtue are not the most important aspects of human existence lead us miserably astray. I realize this has become an unpopular point of view. But with all my heart, I believe it: we do one another no favors pretending that wandering in the woods and hoping to stumble on the truth is the best way to enrich humanity. We know what is right. We know what is beautiful. We must proclaim it loudly and clearly and leave no room for mistake.

I feel as though we are of similar minds to this point, if not of similar methods. That which is ugly or impure could be constructive. There is something to be said of the subjectivity of beauty, but most will recognize when something is beautiful. A sunset is beautiful, but it does not contain values of virtue nor morality, and thus is instructive in neither. Does that mean that it has no worth? I would say that it does, as does the art that captures it, simply because they enrich the lives of everyone who sees them by being delightful to the eyes. But the sun cannot preach to me, cannot tell me the right way to live my life. It is there to light the day and to dazzle me twice daily as is is born and as it expires. There is poetry in that, it is true, but I am not sure that it is what you would call instructive nor moral.

You are far too kind, this is only a preliminary piece. Perhaps I could do an entire series, though. I have never considered such a thing before, I mostly paint portraits. But this...it feels a bit like a portrait, does it not? I almost feel as if I have known these creatures.

I would strongly recommend it. I have never seen a creature such as that before, so I cannot say with conviction that it seems like a portrait - but being the artist, if you feel that it is, then it must be.

It is a bit strange. But I think that that is why I find it so beautiful. It is so beyond what I know, what I think that any of us know. But that makes it something very exciting. There is beauty in the unknown.

Thank you. I had a vision in my head, I am not sure that I captured it well. The voidfish jellyfish was full of beautiful multicolored lights and almost seemed to glow. It was very strange, and a bit otherworldly and frightening, but it was still so beautiful that I could not help myself.
