It wasn’t his finest hours, but the climb had been long and arduous and Tris was exhausted when he got to the top. So, he’d collapsed to his knees the moment that he’d finally hauled himself back up onto solid ground, then pretty much faceplanted into the dust for a moment. He never, ever wanted to do something like that again. Being a hero fucking sucked.

He’d looked up then and mentally corrected that summary. Being a hero fucking sucked when you were a weedy musician who rarely saw the inside of a gym. Some other people, on the other hand, carried heroics off with ease. Fucking firemen and their damn muscles. He probably didn’t even have a hair out of place, unlike Tris, who felt like he was going to die.

Still, he’d made it to the top and he rolled himself onto his back, then forced himself to his feet. Adam had already disappeared - looking for Kyle and his kid, no doubt - and Ethan was doing some kind of slo mo romance thing toward Blake. Which made Tris look round, wondering where Christian was. Wondering if there was someone going to be waiting for him.

What's going on? I heard somebody say people were stuck up on the surface, and it's pretty clear the monorail isn't working. Where are you guys?

Don't come up here. The robots all shut down, the rides wouldn't stop. I'm with Cillian and we helped, but...yeah it's a mess.

Hey, Tris has to work so he's going to meet me there later, but do you want to head up to the amusement park together?

As MABEL promised, from midafternoon, a party begins by the outdoor pool in the spa zone. A robot-manned grill fires up cooking steaks, burgers, ribs, corn etc and alongside are the usual accompaniments. There is also a fully stocked bar. The music is upbeat and the whole area is lit beautifully with tiny, multi-colored lights. It also feels warmer than New Eden usually does - definitely the kind of weather for hanging out in not very much.

The party is going until late into the night.

There is a grand and spectacular fireworks display at 10pm.

So apparently the town has decided to 'apologise for the inconvenience' of the death threats and vandalism and given me an all inclusive spa day for myself and three others. You guys being those three others.

I say we take them for everything they can offer. You game?

Christian stirred the sauce he was working on, making sure it looked like the picture in the cookbook he’d picked up at the library and then went back to his public health text reading through a few lines while the food cooked more. He’d been trying a lot harder, doing what felt right to him rather than what he thought Tris might want or not want. Which meant dinner when he could make it, take out when he was stuck at classes late. He went with Tris to the bar, either working or sitting in a back table studying. He lit candles and murmured ‘I love you’ with his goodbyes. It actually was a lot easier to pick up Tris’ favorite drinks or make his coffee just so so it was ready when he got up in the mornings than wondering if he should or shouldn’t.

Cooking had been the biggest undertaking, something Olivia never really required, but Christian thought Tris would appreciate. Only problem was, Christian’s knowledge was a lot more limited than he would have liked. He’d gotten the cookbook, one of four, studied them, made notes, then set off the fire alarm on his first try. He was getting better, but it still felt slow. Whatever it took though, whatever he needed to do to make things better with Tris was worth it.

Tris watched Sion go, then turned back to Chris, taking the bucket and rags out of his hands and setting them on the ground. “I’m sorry,” he said, because there seemed to be a lot and he was sure that at least some of it he should be apologising for. Even if he didn’t know where he’d gone wrong, it was entirely clear that he had and he’d not intended to make his boyfriend upset - at least, not with him.

Christian flinched a little when Tris took the buckets, sure he was in trouble for something. He didn’t expect the apology, but ducked his head, shaking it. “It’s probably my fault,” he said to his feet. “I was pushing. I was just...trying to make it better. I’m sorry.”

This is going to sound insane and he's going to kill me for it, but...can you convince Tris to stay with you for a few days? He won't stay with me and... I dunno. I don't want him at his place if someone thinks he's a robot and wants to follow through on the message the left on his walls.

By the time all the decorations were up, the park had been transformed into a piece of Bourbon Street, complete with crowds of people looking to party. Lights were strung between the trees with the occasional banner indicating a drink stand or a food cart, adding to the atmosphere. There was even a dance floor in one corner with music piped in from unseen speakers. The only things missing were the balconies to throw beads from, but that didn’t stop beads from being handed out or the occasional flash to earn them. It was as close to New Orleans as they were going to get, but they didn’t need the parades to make it a party.
