Dean took a breath and steadied himself. It was just coffee, but still, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he should be more excited about this whole thing. He had an actual date. That had happened embarrassingly few times in his life - even fewer if you went for ‘second date’.

And Darcy was nice. She was sweet. She was pretty. There was… nothing wrong with her.

So - I had the date that I got matched up with. And... she actually wants to see me again? Even though it was really kinda awkward and honestly, I think you're basically the only girl I can talk to without feeling like a total idiot.

Her black mini dress with the midriff cut out might not have been super appropriate given her age, but Darcy wanted to look nice for her date. And neither Patrick or Eily saw her leave, so it was all well and good. It was a date after all wasn’t it? Why not look nice?


She was a little late, but that sort of fashionable five minutes that she was sure was completely forgiven with a cute smile and looking as nice as she did. The robots showed her to the table, a neatly set up like something out of a movie and she flashed her date a grin, pushing her hair over one shoulder. “Sorry I’m late!” she said in a rush, like she hadn’t planned it at all.

Dean had been meaning to take a trip up to the surface and take a look around since he got here, but with one thing and another he hadn’t managed it - well, aside from a few hours with Thea spent riding some of the rides, but that hardly counted for this. No, this was a trip based on Jacob’s suggestion. Now Dean was firmly in professional mode, ignoring the fairground to concentrate on the structure of the dome on the surface, interested in the fact that the guy he was meeting had actually thought to look for a way out. That was something Dean hadn’t even thought of prior to the robot attack. Thea was here, after all - why would he want to leave?

Now though, the game had changed. Now they needed to know all their options.

You don't know me, but given what happened the other day with the robots, my friend and I were looking at trying to organise the community a little better. Starting with asking one household in each street to step up and act as a nominated person for that street. Like a go-to guy or girl if there's a problem.

We're also going to be looking at setting up classes in first aid, emergency response, that kind of thing, but first things first, we want to set up some hubs.

Your name came up as a good person in a crisis and I wanted to ask whether you'd be willing to be involved.

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Dean Conway and I have been tasked with ensuring the architectural stability of the city. Which is a flowery way of saying that I've been brought here to make sure that it stays standing.

Given that New Eden seems to have been constructed to a far higher spec than most modern cities, I don't think that is going to be much of an issue, but there are a couple of things that I want to bring up.

Firstly, after the somewhat unexpected robot attack the other day, if people have damage to their pods, could they let me know and I'll ensure that everything is fixed.

Secondly, I'm looking for volunteers to help me on an exploratory mission - I want to go down from the islands (main and residential) to investigate how they're held up from the lake below. I'm looking for people with useful skills - climbing, abseiling, construction - we will be going over the side and I don't have the time or the skill set myself to be able to teach people unless it's absolutely necessary. I would also prefer this to be a manned expedition. I do not want to be reliant on robot assistance for this. We need to know what's down there.

Thea hadn’t said much since she’d been made to stop CPR. She’d never seen anyone die before, never been around for anything like that. She never wanted to go through that again, either. All she could think of was one second this poor guy was asleep in his bed (presumably), and the next - killed by robots. Robots that were supposed to help the citizens of New Eden. Robots that weren’t meant to one day flip out and start attacking her Dean’s house.

It was something that really shocked her to her core, and she was having a little trouble getting herself out of it. Dean hadn’t left, and she’d spent half the night curled up with him on the couch, not asleep, just silently staring into nothing as she tried to process this whole thing. Only it wasn’t processing. She’d read the ‘note’ from whoever ran this place about six hundred times now, and it didn’t magically unlock to contain a deeper message as to why someone died during what appeared to amount to an overblown fire drill.

The alarms started momentarily before the banging. One was shocking enough, but the thuds on the outside of his pod seemed to shake the very structure. Maybe it didn't seem that way from the outside, but inside had him worrying about the very structural integrity of the pod.

Dean was awake, dressed and down the stairs in a moment, communication device strapped to his wrist and already trying to find a way to mass dial everyone who lived in the neighbourhood. He knew the 'bots weren't programmed to do this, something must have gone wrong. "Fuck, don't know if this will work," he swore under his breath, then loudly said, "Time to get up folks, if the banging and the alarms didn't clue you in. Not got the first bloody clue what's going on, but some help would be appreciated cos apparently I'm under attack."
