As I've watched everyone get ready over the last few days, I found myself thinking back to when I first arrived here. There was so much to learn, about all of you, where you're from, and about the world I found myself in. I couldn't fathom the kinds of things we'd face together. I couldn't imagine that we'd be
here, together.
In the months we've been here, I've seen friendships forged in unusual places, across universes that might have never collided if it weren't for whatever power brought us all here together. I've seen us come together - near strangers, many of us - to build a community and to defend each other against what might bring us harm. This isn't an easy situation for many of us to be in. We're far from home, and often far from people we care about. For the Sky People, our arrival has meant opening their doors to strangers, simply because it was the right thing to do. They welcomed us, and a day doesn't go by where I'm not grateful for that.
This isn't easy, but we are resilient. We could have given up in the face of hardship. Instead, we've chosen to keep fighting for one more day. We've chosen not just to live, but to live as best as we can. For some of us, that means we'll be defending our home and our community tonight. For others, that means providing for all of us. It means healing the sick and wounded. It means bringing joy to another person. It means bringing comfort. I don't want anyone to feel like their contributions aren't worth something, no matter who you are. Without you, none of this would be possible.
And that is why tonight is important. Tonight we protect what we've created, and we forge a path towards a better future. Tonight, we face an enemy at our borders that will kill us all at the first chance they have. Tonight, we stand up and we say
no, not tonight.
I'm sure there are some of you who are frightened, and I can't blame you. But I have faith. I have faith in each of us tonight, and our strength. I have faith that tomorrow, the sun will rise on a new beginning for us, and that one day, we'll look back on this moment and tell future generations about the time we stood together against an army knocking at our doors. We will not let them destroy the good we've created here. We will not let them take our home from us.
