You know, back home, people don't travel much. Perhaps to the shore, if they're wealthy, but we never were, and besides, immigrants at the seaside? That aren't working on the boardwalk? Horrors. For the most part, you grow up with the expectation that you'll do either your father's or your mother's profession, and you won't leave the town that you were born in because what's the point? What are you looking for out there?

Well, I was looking for my sister. She'd run off a few nights before, and when we woke up to her empty room and missing traveling clothes we knew where she'd gone. There's only one place desperate people go to where I'm from, and that's Yharnam. Laila had been sick - dying, really, honestly, but none of us had voiced it. It was just Laila's malady, Laila's affliction, and then it was Laila's gone. I went after her, because I'm stupid and hopeful and thought that maybe Yharnam couldn't be all that bad, and it wasn't, actually, it was worse than bad.

I'd never been out of Aldergate before. Neither had Laila. I never found her, you know. I looked everywhere. And then all that mess happened - magic unto prophecy unto ancient rune unto hubris - and then I was here. Mount Weather! Brand new place, brave new world. Do you know how far I've traveled now? So much farther than my father or mother did, even with that ocean they crossed back in the yesteryear. So much distance to have so little to show for it.

I suppose what I'm rambling about - sorry, my point's buried under self-pity - is that for all the reasons that this place is so strange to me, so unknowable, so unlike home, it's nonetheless SO LIKE home. All these people coming in and out of our lives with nary a trail to amble on or a string of fate to pull, and what are we left with? A hope, and our feet itching to follow, if we care to. I always care to.

I miss them. I miss her. Is that too sentimental? Well, others were always better at the stiff upper lip.

Okay, so all you people picking up shifts in the kitchen, hi, and thanks. I'm Chloe, and since I've been the loudmouth in the kitchen for a while now, what I say goes. Before you do any kind of shift we're going to go over safety basics, shit like holding knives safely and where the fire extinguishers are all and all that. Also I don't give a flying fuck if you're a superhero impervious to everything on the planet; you're still going to get the lecture.

People come, and people go. There's no reason to be assholes in the meantime.

[ Edited to Add ]: Yo, can I get a volunteer for Medical to do a basic First Aid spiel thing to the new recruits?

Mount Weather: Minerva McGonagall

Hello, everyone. I have accepted Second in Command of Civilian Services. Podkru numbers are critically short in almost all of our Civilian Services. We are down to: 1 Food Service, 2 Dishwashers, 2 Teachers, 2 Child Caretakers. The only ones that did not lose the majority of their workers were Laundry Services and Sanitation, and even then, that is only 3 people each. Food Service is the most critical of these as, of course, we all must eat.

I am therefore proposing that each of us work at least one meal shift per week, with exceptions only for those ill, injured, or responsible for the care of someone who cannot care for themselves. Though I cannot require this of you, I hope you can recognise the importance and will contribute. There are simple food preparations that almost anyone could assist with, and anyone who is absolutely uncomfortable with that can at least help in portioning out and serving the food. I have pulled the records for prior meal plans and schedules so they can be scaled down accordingly for the current population.

I'm aware that many of you enjoy regular alcohol, and I occasionally imbibe myself, but there are now vastly more people brewing alcohol than preparing food. I'd ask that the brewers, in particular, consider transferring your work focus to the much more urgent food needs and take more than a single day's meal shift.

I'd also ask that anyone who can speed the dishwashing process, please give your assistance in spelling the dishes or otherwise helping this along. There isn't enough space at the washing stations for everyone to wash their own at every meal, therefore we need to continue to do them in bulk.

Mr Albus Severus Potter, Mr Bucky Barnes, and Ms Sue Storm-- please see me tomorrow at 8 AM in 203 for an emergency meeting with the Skaikru who remain as Teachers and Child Caretakers.

Thank you.

Anything to distract fr The concept of voting to herald in a new leader is strange to me, although I understand that it is quite common to many of you. It literally gives the power to the masses, does it not? Interesting concept, even as I am skeptical of it. Yharnam functioned as an independent city-state, of course, and was constantly at war with the city-states it was geographically near. The Church organised the city and determined which cleric sat on which borough. It was an imperfect system, as it tended to favour familial dynasties rather than opportunity for advancement for everyone, but as the purity of one's blood was vital to being respected, familial inheritance was the only way to control who took seats of power.

So, voting. How interesting! I have done so. I can see the appeal, I suppose, although what does one do if one is not happy with the results? Is there recourse? Objection? Fights to the death? There was a son who was granted the head of the Choir back home who many hated due to his constant trips to the lower wards of the Cathedral district (I believe it is referred to as 'red light' in this vernacular). Many objected to what they perceived to be his moral failings. There was objection to his post, the Choir rallied, and they never found his head in the end. Politics are fascinating stuff.

Can anyone keep an eye on my dog when if this ends up in a fight? Max is well-behaved when I've got to work, but I don't want him trying to follow me around much more. He's great with kids, real easy-going. You won't have any trouble getting him to mind you.

MILITARY SQUAD DELTA:
I'm no good at speeches, so I'll keep this short. At some point, the siege will be over - one way or another. If we fight, I know we're as prepared as we're going to be. We've been working well as a unit, so I know we'll be fine out there. If we get separated, listen to the nearest sergeant or general. Rest while you can, stay strong, stay ready.

HEY Mount Weather bitches, better get to dinner early tonight, because I've made the best goddamn catfish you'll ever put in your face. Not gonna lie, it's gonna cure a TON of ills. We're talking hella crunchy, just the RIGHT amount of spice, it's the goddamn catfish of ANGELS.

So get your butts to dinner and don't be dicks and fight over it. I'm in this gig for adoration, not like, a full-on coup. You're welcome.

I wanted to take a moment to thank the Frye's for organizing Fight Club and Commander Shepherd for the training camp that's been so useful to a lot of us in practicing our skills and acquiring new ones. In that line, I was wondering if there'd be any interest in a sort of fight club but with weapons - swords, axes, staves - whatever your close combat weapon of choice is.

We could practice on a semi-regular basis and do a tournament of matches once a month if folks want.

I can handle constant threat of radiation poisoning, death-by-arrow, dragon, White Witch and werewolf, but a coffee ration? That just hurts. If I had a trailer, I'd be storming back to it.

Hi. I'm Emily, Em if I like you (don't assume that I like you). You might know me from such events as Medical Presents: Roundhouse Kick to the Head, and Ungodly Shriek II: The Bitchening. I got here a few days ago with the not-Grant Ward and now I'm free to go to my room to see my roommates for the first time (ew). I'll also be working in admin or whatever for legal, which, okay. Wish I had my secretary outfit.

I think this is pretty much bullshit and I hate this place but I hate wendigos more, so here we go. It's really something to meet you people. If you mess with me, I'll kill you. Cheers, bitches!

[info]partnerintime

HEY girls who play instruments. Name's Chloe Price, and I do drums or guitar. I was thinking we've got a 100% Pod God-endorsed opportunity to jam together, what with all these instruments all over the place. I'm talking real, grungy, badass MUSIC, none of that faux "girl power lol" bullshit. Let me know if you're interested here and what you can bring to the sisters.

~Ladies~ only. Dudes, respect your game but fuck off already.

Soooo I guess I get to officially get my ass out of Medical today? Awesome.

Anyway, I'm Mike. Sorry. About all that. We kinda had a bad night and I'm still not completely convinced that this place isn't Soylent Green, but thanks for the patching up, docs. Sewing up. I appreciate it, even if I know I was kind of a dick that night.

No shooting, promise. I mean, from me. I'm not making any promises for Emily. Y'all should still be scared of her.

'Pod God', hmmm? Pithy. A being capable of tearing a person from his or her realm and depositing them in another and we give them a title reminiscent of a nursery rhyme. 'She of the Unknowable Journey', maybe? 'Ruler of The Wind'? Or do we call it a 'Pod God' because we've no answers, and mocking what's happened to us is easier than respecting it?

Magic's a fickle creature, to be sure. But I'll keep to my "please" and "thank you"'s, if it's all the same to you and yours.

Elias Kilmartin, of Fallen London. And since that apparently won't mean anything, it is - was - the year of 1891. Queen Victoria sold off London ages ago, and down it sunk into the dark bliss of the Neath with the devils and the shades. Doesn't that sound nice? I've never seen the sun and I don't care to. Big ball of fire in the sky that cooks you slowly? Who thought that was a good idea?

Claire's post got me thinking... Wow, I miss Reese's. But then this morning, I learned the joy of having to sharpen the last two inches of my eyeliner pencil with a knife. My mascara dried up like, two months ago, and my Nars lip gloss is on it's last legs.

I miss Sephora.

If anyone feels the need to rain on my parade, and talk about how there's bgger things in life to worry about, blah, blah noble superhero shit, I will make your eardrums bleed. People need creature comforts, and $30 eyeliner just happens to be mine. Join in on the commiserate instead, okay? What dumb item do you miss from home that while you can completely live without, life just isn't the same? (I think 'vibrators' goes without saying, but by all means.)

MILITARY & COMMAND:
Surveillance spotted three disturbances just outside our perimeter. To the north, our intel indicates the presence of four frost giants. East south east, roughly 100 robots. West, orcs.

We're taking volunteers from our military ranks to form three separate teams to handle this. These teams will investigate the disturbances, and defend our home. From what I've been told about what's out there, you should expect hostility. The remaining military will then be assigned to the second and third lines of defense, as well as guard posts, to ensure all of the civilians within our walls are safe. You'll provide back-up, if necessary. Listen to your commanders' orders.

It should go without saying, but until we tell you otherwise, this information is strictly classified. There is no need to incite panic among the rest of the population if we can take care of this at a distance, and I have faith that we can. If these threats make it past our front line, we'll handle it. For now, we're concentrating on making sure they don't get close enough to breach our walls in the first place.

[ooc: remember, only the volunteers designated on this post will be on the first teams out; everyone else will be assigned other jobs!]

I have news. One of the most-effective form of weapon enhancements in my home world is known as fire paper. When great friction is applied, this lightweight paper transforms to an extremely volatile, flammable substance that effectively coats ones preferred weapon in flames, adding additional damage and a measureless aspect of intimidation to one's fighting. Once the fire paper has exhausted its burning (usually after a minute or so at longest), the weapon is left free of any coating, as it has burned away in the process of immolation.

I should caution you that the high temperature of the flames act as a cauterizing agent in wounds: while you will undoubtedly cause people great pain (and, depending upon your skill, kill them), their deaths will be a result of your blows and not from bleeding out or infection. Some consequently see fire paper as a mercy in my world. As burns are among the most painful of wounds, I would not be so quick as to call it mercy. Additionally, weapons that have already been magically enhanced cannot use fire paper, so those of you who have enchanted weapons will have to go without.

I have been successful at recreating the formula from my home world, and have begun production of fire paper for our soldiers in the event of fighting. I would be remiss if I did not thank Dame Evie Frye, as she assisted me in testing early versions of the enhancement and aided me greatly when I nearly had my eyebrows singed off.

My next project will be to create bolt paper - same concept, only an electrical charge is added to a weapon rather than fire. If you have any questions, please let me know.
