Thursday: Exploring

Who: Jade and Tilly
When: Mid-morning
Where: their hotel rooms, then Eldritch Island

Tilly was no stranger to bad dreams. Her job was a huge part of that, and her past. She also thought it had something to do with her gift, a subtle tug that never truly turned off. It meant that she was almost always the first one up in the morning. Sometimes she crashed hard, catching up on days of scant sleep, but this morning was not one of those days.

Outside of her window the world was white. Where she ordinarily might have been able to see the hotel sign in the parking lot, there was nothing. It was like the whole place had vanished while she was sleeping. It was so quiet. She felt so alone.

Tuesday: Welcome to Darkwater

Who: Jade and Tilly
Where: town, then the Darkwater Motor Inn
When: late afternoon

Jade felt as if he'd been driving forever. He'd taken over the wheel from Tilly about three hours ago, and with the exception of one stop for gas and a restroom break, he'd been doing his best to get them to their destination quickly. It was possible that he was overly tired from the long road trip and crabby to boot; he hadn't had much at all to say today. They were approaching the Darkwater city limits along the endless coast road, and he was so relieved that he almost couldn't stand it. It wasn't that the scenery wasn't beautiful, more that he was too worn down to appreciate anything. He was almost glad that they didn't have an immediate assignment beyond keep an eye on what's going on in the area. Maybe they'd get the chance for some R & R for a few days. He wouldn't say no to that.

"The motel's not far from the marina, right?" he said, speaking up for the first time in about an hour. His voice sounded husky, and he cleared his throat.

Flashback: New Assignment

Who: Tilly and Jade
Where: Somewhere south of the Mexican border
When: A few days ago

Every inch of her strained to hear it. She knew it was in the room with her. She had experienced some bad movie moments during her career as a hunter, but this one took the cake. Not only had she and Jade been separated, but the flashlight strapped to the barrel of her shotgun had sputtered and died on her. She was crouched in the corner of a shack in a dusty shanty town in a nameless little borough of Tijuana, and she could feel something moving in the darkness.

Every instinct that Tilly had told her to just start blasting. The room wasn't that large and a lucky muzzle flare might give her an idea of where the movement was coming from. Her finger was motionless on the trigger though, because she didn't know where Jade was. The way things were going tonight, she'd clip him instead of that...thing.

Tilly fervently hoped that the creature's night vision was as bad as her own. She didn't dare make a sound.
