Wednesday: Coffee or Tea?

Who: Jane and Thomas
Where: A coffee shop in Darkwater
When: Midday-ish

It seemed prudent, to Jane, to put in more applications, in the hopes of getting... well, maybe not a better job, but one that the crazies of the town who apparently wanted to torture and/or rape her didn't know she worked at. Even if she knew she'd never manage long at a coffee shop-- hence why she hadn't applied, before-- she dutifully went into Starbucks and Solid Grounds and this little hole-in-the-wall tea-joint to turn in applications. If she couldn't get a job here-- keeping it was another story-- she was well on her way to buying some beach-front property in Arizona.

Monday: Remembering How to Get Along

Who: Jane and Sean
Where: some trees down by the beach
When: Midday

Jane was off work already. She'd gone in at five, and gotten off at noon, and she really didn't want to go home. Well, okay, didn't want to stay home. Her house didn't have air conditioning. So she'd stopped by, changed into cut-off shorts, picked up the little monster, and called her brother. One of the ones she could stand.

Now she was waiting down by the beach, in one of the few patches of shade she'd been able to find, with the little monster romping around in the sand and sun ahead of her, his little chicken-wings spread and all six legs pumping and tossing sand everywhere. He was almost cute. Well, "he". She didn't know whether it was male or female, but "it" was getting old, in her head.

Eventually. )

Sunday - Stuck

Who: Joel and Jane
When: mid-day
Where: Eldritch Island

Mass had been ... well, mass, and it had sort of soothed Joel's soul. He hardly listened to the litanies anymore, and he wasn't actively searching for some golden truth. It just felt good to be there in the presence of God. Especially with his sister by his side. It was a singularity. He didn't really know where his other siblings -- besides Turlough -- stood as far as their spirituality went, but Jane seemed keen enough to attend church regularly. So they'd met up at the ferry and gone.

Now everyone was filtering out, and Joel already had a cigarette tucked between his lips when the two McDonnells stepped outside. He lit it as soon as they were a little bit away from the rest of everyone, and glanced over at his newfound sister. "So ahh ... lunch, or anythin'?"

You're going to die an early death, you know. )

Saturday: A(n Un)lucky Find

Who: Jane, Leroy, and Mark
Where: Grocery store parking lot, Darkwater
When: Early evening

Well, it was a job. It was a shitty job, but it was a job. Jane headed out of the grocery store, untying the apron from behind her and scowling. It would pay the rent. Maybe. If she lasted that long. Hopefully she at least lasted long enough to pay one month's worth.

The little monster was waiting at home-- she still hadn't come up with a name for it-- because she knew that bringing it to work would have gotten her fired and possibly even arrested, and the little monster smashed with a broom or something. Thank god it was only part-time, right now, so she wasn't gone very long.... Jane crumpled up her apron and headed for the car, still looking less than pleased.

A beatin's not what I want from you, honey. )

Tuesday: Not a Puppy

Who: Sean and Jane
When: Afternoon
Where: Sean's apartment

Sean had called Jane earlier that day and invited her over to his apartment for lunch. He didn't have much in the way of groceries for he and Will, but he'd bought bread, deli meat and various cheap items to keep their stomachs full until he could con someone into going grocery shopping for him. Will wasn't around at the moment, which was okay with Sean. He didn't mind spending solo time with his siblings at all, inf act he preferred it. It was easier to get to know someone when you didn't have three or four people around to distract you.

He'd showered that morning, but forgot to shave again, and he covered his shaggy hair with his cap that was in desperate need of a wash. After smoking a cigarette, he washed his hands and pulled everything he felt they might need to make some sandwiches, if Jane was actually hungry when she arrived. If not? Well, he'd figure out someway to keep her from wanting to rush off.

What th' hell is THAT? )

Monday: Booby Traps and Little Monsters

Who: Jane and Joel
Where: Jane's little rented house
When: Early evening

Despite the lure of a potentially free dinner, on top of lunch, Jane foudn herself dialing Joel's number with annoyance when it was time to go meet him-- this time it was supposed to be at a little coffee shop kind of restaurant, rather than the deli-- to cancel. It wasn't that she didn't want to go hang out with her other brother-- she didn't, really, though-- or that she wasn't feeling well or anything.

It was that the stupid rock-egg-thing had proved to be an egg, once and for all, because it was apparently trying to hatch.

She held the landbound line to her ear, wishing to hell she still had her cell phone, and waited for him to pick up. Thank God she was still in the habit of writing down all her important numbers the day she got them, once she got home.

I've gotta take a rain check on going out. )

Monday: Lunch With Jane

Who: Turlough and Jane
Where: A little diner in Darkwater
When: Lunchtime

Lunch meetings seemed the best ways to see brothers. The one with Sean had gone okay, after all, and you had something to do besides just talk. And once you were done eating, you could use it as an excuse to leave, if you were uncomfortable. So when Turlough had wanted to see her that day, Jane had said to meet for lunch, in the same little diner-deli she'd met Sean at. Might as well go somewhere she knew there'd be food she liked, after all.

To tell the truth, she was kind of dreading this get-together. Her lip was still ugly, and her face was bruised, and she thought she'd pulled a muscle in her side so she was moving kind of carefully. After her briefing with the police, she'd come straight here, so she could be sitting by the time Turlough got here. Her kid brother. Wow, this was weird as hell. She'd gotten herself settled, the as yet unhatched-- or unbroken-- egg thing in her sweater pocket on her lap and a mess of string on the table that she was slowing turning into a tightly knit sock.

Awkward )

Sunday: The Hold-Up

Who: Jake, Jane, Ava, Mark Peal and Leroy Holland (NPCs)
Where: the Quik-Stop in Darkwater
When: 7:30 p.m.

Leroy had walked into the Quik-Stop about ten minutes previously and headed directly for the restrooms in the back hallway of the store. He'd opened the rear door for his accomplice and then promptly locked it with the open padlock that hung on the metal bar waiting for closing time. Next to the bathrooms was a closet that contained a dirty rolling bucket and mop and a massive amount of other clutter, and he'd found a length of twine on one of the shelves that would do nicely for what he had in mind.

Trying to look unassuming, he meandered up to the counter and said to the clerk, "Man, someone heaved in the bat'room back there. Dat's some gross shit."

Sunday: Sibling Banter

Who: Sean and Jane
Where: The phone, a deli, then the beach!
When: Afternoon

It had been a pretty insane night, with the weather outside leaving Sean awake and restless for much of it. The winds had been rough, and he'd spent most of the night watching the rain and hail from the small window in his apartment. Finally he managed to get some sleep, though his dreams were unnerving and kept him tossing and turning until he pried his eyes open to see it was nearly ten am. He wasn't sure what Will was up to, but Sean himself knew he couldn't just hang out inside, despite the shitty weather. He'd showered and dressed, thought about shaving but ultimately decided it'd take too long. He ventured out for coffee soon after, and began to walk around Darkwater to assess damage, ignoring the trickle of rain that continued to fall on him. Eventually around lunch time, after having walked for several miles, Sean made an impulsive decision and called Jane's number. He just thought maybe seeing Sorcha and Jane separately would be better for his own sanity. Turlough mentioned them all getting together, and that was still a great idea, but this was slightly less overwhelming for Sean.

He let the phone ring and waited to hear her voice.

As long as nothing got too serious, she'd be fine. )

Tuesday - A little warning.

Who: Sorcha and Jane
When: late morning
Where: Jane's house

The trip over to Darkwater with Joel had almost seemed surreal. They'd talked some, had remained quiet some, and it had struck Sorcha how natural it had felt to be with him. Almost as if they'd retained some trace memory of one another over the years that they hadn't seen each other, hadn't spoken. Then they'd gotten to Jane's, fortunately finding the girl home, and gotten through the introductions and the sheer oddness of the situation. Joel had left them and gone outside to do something, have a cigarette, make a phone call... she wasn't sure, and it didn't matter.

I'll be just fine )

Sunday - Reunion x 3

Who: Turlough, Jane and Joel
Where: Mass at St. Peters on Eldritch
When: 9am

Turlough had been surprised to learn that the local diocese had decided to continue to use the old heritage church on Eldritch Island as it's soul seat of worship. He would have thought that they would have built a larger church or cathedral in Darkwater where there were more people. Still, his investigations showed that the modest congregation in the area commuted over to the island and filled up the little stone church there. This Sunday, Turlough boarded the 8am ferry with the other people dressed in their Sunday best.

Boys and girls chased each other up and down the decks with parents calling out for them to slow down. Tur, without a car, leaned against the railing and let the quiet and stillness of the morning wash over him. He wasn't badly hung over and he was glad. Usually Sunday mornings were torturous if he'd been drinking before but he never allowed himself to miss the early mass. He'd done the damage to himself, after all. The least he could do was present himself to the Lord and ask to be forgiven and do his penance.

Is it really you? )

Saturday - Conversations about Religion.

Who: Jane and Shoel
When: Late morning, around 11 A.M.
Where: Near the Lighthouse

Jane had spent almost an hour at church that morning. Apparently she had a lot of confessing she needed to do. The girl's mouth was less than pristine and vulgarities seemed to leak from it like a dripping faucet in a low budget project of New York. By the time she got through with that, she figured she should spend a little time getting more used to her surroundings. There wasn't much she'd been able to do with moving and getting things unpacked, so she hopped the ferry and made her way to the lighthouse once she got on the island. Dressed in a pair of tattered jeans, her thin lower thigh and knee protruding through a tear in the knee, and a tank top that didn't do anything to help her look more feminine, she continued to walk towards the structure, inspecting it in a way. She still hadn't figured out what had drawn her to the town yet and the more she thought about it, the more annoyed she got. Across the country and poof she's here and now she was in front of a lighthouse looking at it for no damn reason.
