Monday: A Stitch In Time

Who: Allie and Cordelia
When: Early evening (6:00pmish)
Where: The hospital

The day hadn't been going the way Cordelia had hoped, or expected. She'd woken up late for work, burned herself while trying to pour her coffee and then accidentally deleted a file containing personal photos she'd been trying to print out at work. The only bright side she could find in the entire morning was that the photos hadn't belonged to a client, which meant she avoided a stern lecture from her boss. Managing to get through the rest of the work day was a challenge, but she did it somehow, forcing politeness and smiles to hide her crabby mood from customers who came into the studio.

After work, Cordelia headed to the grocery store to pick up some ingredients for spaghetti sauce, thinking maybe she would invite Corwin over some night that week and make him dinner. She would be seeing Noah Wednesday night, but it was always nice to have some excuse to invite company over when you lived alone in a big house. Unfortunately her bad luck for the day didn't stop at five o'clock. After reaching up for a jar of spaghetti sauce, Cordelia's phone began to ring, which startled her from her daydreaming. The jar slipped through her fingers, crashing to the ground and splattering spaghetti sauce all over the shelves, the floor and her clothes. Cursing, she bent down immediately to try and pick up some of the bigger pieces of glass as one of the grocery employees began hurrying down the aisle to help her.

"I'm so sorry," Cordelia began, looking up at the guy in the red vest as she made the mistake of grabbing another piece of glass without looking. It sliced into her palm, causing her to hiss and drop it back to the floor. Blood began to seep out of the deep gash immediately and the second her gaze landed upon it, she felt nauseous. Her stomach churned and she fell back onto her ass, forcing her eyes closed as not to look at the wound. Blood had always done that to her, causing her to nearly faint, or vomit just from the sight.

Getting Over It

Who: Noah and Allie
When: evening
Where: phone

Noah had gone for a run along the beach and then to pick up some takeout, and he hadn't brought his phone along. So when he returned to the boat at about 9 p.m., he found that he had a message waiting. He put his food down on the little table and then accessed his voicemail, his eyebrows lifting a touch as he listened. Allie. He hadn't thought he'd ever hear from her again. It had only been three days since he'd left a voicemail for her, true, but he'd just had a feeling that she was terrified of him now.

He got himself a beer from the fridge, washed up and settled himself at the table, taking a few bites of his chicken lo mein before returning the call. He put his phone to his ear and waited to see if she'd pick up.

Allie picked up on the third ring, sounding a little breathless. "Hello?" She had been just getting ready for bed after logging some time with her shower. She'd washed sand out of every nook and cranny she could think of, but she still felt like she was gritty. Allie hadn't even looked at the caller ID. She half expected it to be her father and the other half way laying bets that it was the hospital. She'd spent so much time tromping up and down the beach, she'd forgotten that she'd called Noah.

Sunday - Beach Combing

Who: Allie and Shoel
When: Early Sunday afternoon, after the storm passes.
Where: On the beach near Allie's house

By Sunday, Allie's bruises were practically invisible. They weren't even tender anymore. A tiny dab of cover up hid the last little tint of yellow on her face. The concussion was long gone as well and she'd been back at work that weekend. The storm the night before had been wild and Allie was glad she hadn't had to get up at dawn and bike in the rain to the hospital.

She puttered, dusted, did some laundry while the power was on, read a book while it wasn't. By the end of it, she just really wanted to get out of the house. So she pulled on a cardigan and a pair of flats that she didn't mind getting all muddy and sandy. After locking up and dropping her sunglasses down onto the bridge of her nose, Allie headed down the boardwalk toward the beach. There were other people out walking today too, which made her feel simultaneously better and nervous. What if she ran into Noah? She hadn't been able to respond to his apologetic message but now, a week later and with the bruises fading, she was having a little bit of self doubt. He'd seemed genuine. He hadn't hurt her, either. She'd taken care of that all on her own. Maybe...she'd...call him...sometime. Maybe.

She was mulling this possibility over, a frown creasing her brows, as she stepped down onto the sand and headed for the grey surf.

Wednesday - Not What You Expected

Who: Allie and Noah
Where: Peterman's Seafood Restaurant
When: Just about 7pm on the button.

Allie had pedaled home like the devil was after her, despite feeling like she was going to fall over at any minute. The early part of the week had been the most exhausting few days yet. She'd ended up staying late both Monday and Tuesday nights due to some sort of flu sweeping through the staff. She had the misfortune of insisting to Dr. Fisher that she felt fine and so she'd ended up doing the head nurses' paperwork! Today though, she had insisted from the beginning that she was leaving at five and nothing save a shotgun was going to make her stay. She'd managed to unlock her bike by quarter to six.

She barely saw the passing landscape as she whooshed her way home, threw herself into the shower and quickly scrubbed the grime of the hospital off of herself. With her hair freshly washed and blown dry, she felt a lot better. Allie pulled on a pair of capri tights, a jean skirt and a billowy bright yellow top and pumps to match, scooped her still a little bit damp hair up into a ponytail and dabbed on the barest bit of natural looking makeup. Just enough to hide her fatigue. Her favourite retro denim jacket was shrugged on against the slight chill along the coast that evening. She was half tempted to toss an umbrella into the bike's handlebar basket but decided against it.

She re-boarded her bike, tossed her heels in the handlebar basket and took her time down the boardwalk to Peterman's. After locking it up to a nearby light post, Allie slipped her shoes on again and strolled in through the front door. She was greeted by the same blond hostess as she had been the last time and Allie smiled. "Hi there, is Noah Absolom here yet?" she asked.

Saturday: Walking Home

Who: Allie and Noah
Where: Somewhere on the boardwalk between Vapor and Allie's place
When: Very late.

Allie had been having fun with Santiago. Granted, not at much fun as the couple in the next booth over. She at least felt like she'd held on to most of her mysteries. They'd reached a point where they were either going to have to go find more privacy or go their separate ways for the night. Allie had ended up shooing the host back toward the party. She'd had a couple more cosmos (all the while thanking her father for giving her his strong Irish constitution along with her pint size) and danced a bit longer.

Not too long after midnight, however, she realized that she was a little tipsy and getting very tired. She'd thought about calling a cab and perhaps sober, she definitely would have. As it was, she was looking forward to a walk. She blew a kiss to Santiago from across the party and slipped out into the night. Compared to the steamy crush of the club, the marina was chilly and refreshing. Allie sighed in relief and cut down the path that led to the boardwalk. It would meander up along the northern edge of Sandpiper Cove and take her pretty much to her front door.

Saturday: Who's Afraid Of A Man In A Dress?

Who: Allie and Santiago
When: Evening
Where: Vapor

Allie had dressed with care. It was a warm night and she planned to dance and so she'd opted for a bubble skirted cotton mini-dress. It was a lucious orange that made the refreshing taste of citrus flood her senses just from looking at it. With a pair of sheer capri tights to make her a little more comfortable dancing, a pair of ballet flats and some chunky sparkly jewelry, Allie was ready for the night. She tucked a little bit of money into her minimally padded bra and called a cab.

Arriving at Vapor was a little bit exciting. She was no stranger to the posh clubs in L.A. She'd even been known to rub elbows with the rich and famous, thanks to her dad. It was just that this was her new life and this club night felt like it was entirely hers. The string of people trailing in and out of the place all seemed young and energetic, which only bolstered her own feelings. The music was loud and already she couldn't wait to hit the dance floor.

Inside, the place looked like any high end club in California. It was lovely and she recalled that it had been completely remodeled. What a thrill to be at the reopening of the only real dance club in town! She did a lap of the room, nodding or waving to a couple of familiar faces from the hospital before squeezing between the crowd and the dancefloor, claiming a little chunk of it for herself.

Thursday: Talking to Strangers in the Lunch Line

Who: Allie and Shoel
Where: The lunch line in the cafeteria at Darkwater General
When: Noon, Thursday

Allie fished into the pocket of her pants, searching for the crumpled bills she'd stuffed in there when she'd dashed out of the doctor's lounge this morning. She was so hungry she could barely focus on the numbers and she couldn't remember if it had been two fives or two tens. She pushed her orange plastic tray along the rails, reaching into a cooler for a bottle of water and snagging an apple off the top pile. Now that the healthy was handled, she was eying the lasagna or the shepherds pie that were on offer as a hit meal. Maybe she just wanted a salad? Indecisiveness appeared to be the theme of the day. She'd been trying to decide if she was too exhausted to attempt to call Noah for dinner after her shift.

"You know," said a voice from behind Allie, "I'm glad we don't actually have to wear those red and white uniforms like we do in movies and things. But I like still being a candy-striper, even without the stripes. The hospital food is so good."

There was a short, skinny, dark-haired girl in line behind Allie, and she had just reached for a shepherd's pie, herself. "Hi," she added after her unexpected and probably unasked for comment, looking up at Allie with a bright sort of smile. "You must be new."

Nobody should stop someone else from being nice. What kind of example would that make? )

Monday: Picking Up Over Dinner

Who: Allie and Noah
When: Monday evening
Where: Peterman's Seafood, near Sandpiper's Cove.

Allie didn't exactly regret her choice to come to Darkwater. It was just that she regretted she couldn't have ended up with a different teaching doctor as her supervisor. As it was, she felt run through a wringer and had actually groaned when she climbed onto her bike. It still seemed as though the sky would open up at any time or blow her right off the boardwalk and into the ocean but it held off long enough for her to pedal her tired butt home.

She'd passed Peterman's Seafood on her way to and from work and shopping but had yet to venture in there. It was on the northern curve of Sandpiper Cove and not too far from her beachfront home. Since staring into her fridge had yielded no interest, Allie decided to seek wine and company elsewhere.

Sunday: A New Arrival Settles In

Who: Allie and Christian
Where: The local grocery
When: About noontimes.

Allie rolled up onto her tip toes in a pair of very well broken in chucks in order to reach waaaaay up to the top of a pile of oranges. She knew better than to try to pull from the bottom of the stacked fruit and she somehow got it into her head that the best stuff was always just a little bit out of reach. Not that it stopped her from trying.

Today had been a busy day and it still had a ways to go. She didn't own much from her university years, having shared an apartment with four other med students. When they had finally divided their belongings that spring there just hadn't been much. Allie was sure that was a great relief to the rather tired two old men who ran the local moving company. It had said Bob and Fred's Moving on the side of the cube truck and it had been Bob and Fred themselves who had presented on her doorstep.

All of her stuff was out of storage and tucked into the loft style townhouse right on the beach. She had the keys and the utilities were on! Now it looked like it was going to storm and the wind was jacking up toward crazy very quickly. The plan was to gets some basic supplies and book it home on the bike before the rain started. With a backpack and the basket on her bike, she thought she'd be fine for hauling. In the basket tucked into the crook of her elbow were leafy produce, some sandwich meat, bread and peanut butter. She'd even snagged a pack of batteries for her flashlight, if she could just remember which box she'd packed it in. Living in L.A and under the threat of earthquakes had left the girl with a need to be prepared.

Two round navel oranges were deposited in the basket and she was shuffling on in the direction of the dairy doors. Cheese and milk, cheese and milk, she told herself. Ooo. And maybe some ice cream... Allie stood in the aisle, stairing at the myriad of ice cream cartons in the freezer. Could she get it home without it melting? It was damn hot outside. She had turned on the A/C before she had left, not that her place really needed it. It still felt chilly, even on the second visit. "Hmm," she said out loud, one slim and steady finger tapping her chin.
