What the hell was the evidence used to justify detaining the Professor?

We interrupt this live radio broadcast to bring you breaking news from London’s Lambeth Bourough. Tragedy has struck in the night, and three prominent guests of the Renishaw hotel have disappeared. We’re receiving reports that the guest’s names are:

I feel like we are operating under the assumption that it is one person committing these murders. Is there anything to suggest that there isn't a second person assisting them?

I feel like we are being targeted. Us and people from one other world.

I can't figure out if there's anyone connected to the two worlds who might have reason to do so. Beyond being directed to do so by a Scientist. It has been theorised that is possible but it still doesn't supply us with an answer as to who it could be.
