Dec. 17th, 2019

[info]yesidid

Filtered to kids in school and their guardians, plus teachers/helpers/etc.

I hope everyone is doing alright with school!

Just to let everyone know, this Friday (Dec. 20) will be the last day before winter break. We'll take some time off between then until Monday Jan. 6th.

The little's playgroup will continue as usual except for Dec. 24-26 and Dec. 31-Jan. 2. Any of the kids too old for this group normally, but too young to be on their own, will be welcome to join in during the break. Mary Ellen has some little holiday crafts they can do and some games that everyone will be able to play.

If any teachers want to host extra classes during break, just let me know and I'll put them on the schedule.

ETA:

Here is a digital copy of the class schedule that's up in the food court for everyone.

[OOC: if anyone needs anything changed/fixed/added you should be able to edit, or let me know and I can :) ]

So, since it seems like more and more kids are coming all the time, and more and more kids are reaching school age, I've been doing some organizing for the school.

We decided to split everything in to 4 basic groups so that there aren't lots of classes with only one or two kids per group. It'll be a bit more like one-room schoolhouses than modern education for those familiar with the systems from Earth.
Littles (under 5)
Basics (5-8)
Formal (9-16 or anyone who didn't have a formal education where they're from and wants one)
Continuing (add-on classes for anyone)

I've gotten together a few extra classrooms so there will be regular places for the two younger groups and one for each of the older ones, though I know some of the teachers for the older groups have their own spaces too (and some need to take place outside of classrooms) so those ones can move around as needed.

Obviously, this is a massive group effort and we can tailor it as-needed so if anyone has anymore suggestions for classes they'd like or feel like they need or things they want to teach, just let me know and we can figure it out.

We can start Monday after next to let all the new kids get settled first.

[Backdate to just after the clown-fighting text]

If anyone needs us to watch their kids, drop them off at the younger kid's classroom at [location]. All ages are welcome, even the older ones. We could use the help and it'll keep everyone from worrying too much.

Is there anyone here who can help me improve my English?

I would like to concentrate mainly on speech and listening, because that is where I encounter the most difficulties.

Camp-out!

It's summer and summer means camping because I said so, so I'm teaming up with Bucky, Mary Ellen, Stevie, Bruce, Neville, Dan and anyone else who might want to help out to throw an overnight camp-out in the big park on wheel 3 on Saturday night. If parents want a break at home or a chance to explore Atlanta, feel free to drop your kids off after dinner and we'll watch them for the night or if families want to camp together you can come with them. Or if you don't have kids and want to camp out you can come too. All are welcome.

We'll have some games and a campfire with snacks and a magic tent for everyone to sleep in (you can thank Neville if you see him) or you can bring your own smaller tent if you're a family or are 12 or over and your guardians are okay with you staying on your own. There is a store at [location] in Atlanta that has all sorts or you could probably find something in the mall. Then we'll have some breakfast in the morning and everyone can come back to pick up the kidlets around 10 on Sunday morning.

If anyone wants to help out we can always use more hands, or if you have specific requests for games or food just let me know and we'll make it happen. See everyone on Saturday!

Just wanted to let everyone know, Wednesday is Jacob's second birthday, so in honor of that (and having my own face back) we're going to take Wednesday off at school/daycare. Mary Ellen says she and Stevie can babysit if anyone needs it.

I've done some organizing and it will take a little longer to get the kids' set up for schooling but I've figured out the first few classes. I'll start sign-ups now, but we may have to wait until some of this chaos calms down to actually hold them. All of these will be 'extra' classes for now, open to anyone who's interested.

So, in my stint of being very anti-social, I've been thinking. More and more kids around here either are or are going to soon be school-age and we may want to set up some kind of teaching system. Doesn't have to be a traditional school by any means, but maybe something structured that lets kids get in some socialization along with the learning and be there in case parents don't want to home-school.

In my head I'm thinking maybe 3 'classes':
One for kids who have never been to school that will start at the very beginning, reading, writing, basic math, all that stuff then eventually moving in to basic understanding processes (think preschool-elementary)
Another for anyone who's already got a good base and wants to learn more complex things, but is still young or doesn't want to be overwhelmed (think middle-high school)
And finally one that's a sort of...continuing education thing. Maybe shorter series of classes to learn specific, complex things. I know some people are doing these already, but we could broaden the subjects maybe? Include things like cooking, fighting, or other crafts as well as more traditional learning? (like adult-ed classes)

I'm open to suggestions and anyone who wants to help. I could probably handle the first class but would need help with the others. Personally, I've got a poly-sci degree so I could do higher classes on civics, some ethics, or other social sciences and I'm decent with technology but I know there are plenty of others around here that are much better for that.

Any thoughts?

DISNEY WEEK STARTS TOMORROW!!!

I've decided to start tomorrow just cause why not, I thought for the first night I'd do Snow White and Zootopia, the first and the newest (that isn't a sequel, sorry Dory) animated movies from Disney.

The only help I should need is a couple of people willing to climb up on tall ladders and help hang the cloth we'll be using as a projector screen.

I hope to see lots of you there!

EDIT

Here's the list for this week!

Thursday: Snow White and Zootopia
Friday: Peter Pan (animated) and Hook
Saturday: Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty
Sunday: The Lion King and Finding Nemo
Monday: The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast
Tuesday: Aristocats and 101 Dalmatians
Wednesday: Aladdin and Pocahontas
Thursday: Shrek and Toy Story
