Announcement made at breakfast, and posted on the IVI intranet at 8:00am
At approximately 20:15 BST (4:45 CST) 4 bombs went off at the London Olympic Games. The locations targeted were the Olympic Stadium, the Basketball Arena, House Guards Parade (the location for Beach Volleyball), and the Olympic Park Aquatics Centre. The bombs were located outside of the venues, and among those injured and killed were athletes and spectators. 32 are confirmed dead, 539 injured.
The Human Preservation Society has taken responsibility for these attacks. The statement they released referred to the threats made earlier in the week about countries that were harboring and being sympathetic to Vols, and said that this bombing was in response to the inaction taken by those countries.
IVI students who have questions about specific individuals should contact their dorm head for more information. Those who need to make phone calls to check on family and friends in regards to this incident can use phones in the administrative offices, without use of minutes. Counselors will be available throughout the day.
[ooc reminder: students will not have internet access until 7 tonight, though if they are making phone calls they will be able to get additional information]Additional information to be gathered by phone calls and/or during the internet time:
1 athlete died (she was Chinese), and 34 were injured - everyone else was spectators and staff. none of the athletes injured were competing at the time
Among the killed were Brits, Spanish, Irish, American, Canadian, German, South African, Russian, and Chinese
Caught in the middle of the attacks but not injured was a 15 year old Vol from Russia named Anastasiya - she was attending the games as a spectator with her parents, who both died - Anastasiya has invincibility and was fine.
Competition was stopped for the rest of the day, and an impromptu memorial service was held that night. It was decided that, in the spirit of the Games, competition would resume the next day
There was an anti-Vol protest outside the memorial - they were peaceful, but blamed Vols who didn't come forward for the bombings. A small fight broke out but was quickly contained
