TIME UPDATE

Day 39.

Weather: Apocalyptic storms.

Events: The power never comes back on in the course of the night, nor does the storm stop or even slow. The world is dark and dim, as though the sun never fully rises behind the thick storm clouds. Parts of the property are flooded, and even traveling between the main house and Tobias’ guest house is a bit laborious. The winds are intense, and there’s water everywhere. Some of the more open areas of the house are collecting water rather quickly.

But, hey. Slightly bigger concern. At precisely midnight, the house is entering the Twilight Zone.

Okay, it might be slightly more accurate to say the house is entering ‘horror movie trope zone,’ but the twilight zone has such a better ring to it. From midnight on, everyone’s going to experience frequent, creepy phenomena.

  1. Mirror, Mirror, on the wall… Mirrors are no one’s friend today. No, not even Jack’s. Basically, anytime anyone encounters any mirror, they’re likely to see something funny, and it’s different every time. Say you’re standing at the bathroom sinks, washing your hands. You glance up at the mirror, and oh hey. It’s the plague doctor, standing right behind you. You whirl around, he’s not there, you look back to the mirror and everything’s normal. Ah yes, such a classic horror trope. Good times. Today’s mirror shenanigans will include:

    • Delayed/inverted reflections. Reflections in the mirror may move at just a slightly slower pace. You might see yourself blinking. If you move your right hand in front of a mirror, your reflection might move their left.
    • Funhouse mirrors. Reflections simply distorting in a variety of ways similar to that of carnival funhouses.
    • Bugs. It appears that a bug (or multiple bugs) are crawling around on the mirror, or perhaps under it.
    • Oh God, so much blood. When you’re brushing your teeth in the morning, you probably don’t want to see a waterfall of blood behind you in the mirror. Even less than that would be your desire to see yourself with a gaping head wound, but you will. Oh hell, will you ever.
    • Unexpected guests. The plague doctor’s going to show up a lot in mirrors today, but he’s not the only one. A glowing, ghostly apparition of a woman appears frequently. Most of the time she’s wearing a black veil, and sometimes she slowly yanks it off to reveal she has two black voids where her eyes should be. Good times. There’s also a man in a black ski mask that will appear to be attempting to sneak up on people. When you look at him, he’ll turn and run. But the cherry on top of this sundae from hell are former subjects. That’s right, people that were once in Mount Zenith will occasionally show up in mirrors, going about their business in the background. They never look at the mirrors or engage with anyone’s reflection, usually they just quickly wander past in the background.

  2. Poltergeist activity. Things are going to move a lot today. Stuff slowly sliding off of shelves as though pushed by an invisible hand, or hell, thrown violently. Doors will open and close on their own. Toilets will flush on their own. And no matter how many times one tries to close the cupboard doors in the kitchen, they’re going to keep quietly opening back up.

  3. Close encounters. During the night hours, the veiled woman is going to make some appearances outside of the mirror. She is a ghostly, slightly glowing figure in a long white dress and a black lace veil, and she doesn’t walk so much as glide. No one will ever see her up close. But if you step into a hallway, you might get a glimpse of her rounding a corner down the hall. You can run after her if you like, but she’ll never be there.

Anyone using a bathroom stall in an otherwise empty bathroom will probably hear the sound of someone entering the room in heavy boots and walking past their stall. The door lock on the stall will jam and not want to open right away, and by the time it is opened there’s no hint that anyone was ever there - though a door might be open, and another toilet might flush on its own. The water in the communal showers might even turn on.

  4. Voices. Anyone alone in a room for a prolonged period of time (say, more than half an hour) may hear voices. There’s a couple of different ways this happens.

First, they might hear a pair or group of voices talking in a nearby room. There are several different distinct pairs, though it’s not really possible to make out what they’re saying, for the most part. In most cases, it’s just a few words here or there that come through.

One pair is a man and a woman, and they sound really happy. Their accents are American, and they have the most bits of dialogue that can be understood to a listener. If you were to sit still and listen hard, after a couple of minutes you’d realize that they just found out the woman is pregnant. They’re really happy about it, and apparently their doctor is, too. The conversation is mostly dull, though the word ‘doctor’ does come up a lot. They also seem to be discussing a trip south to see the woman’s family and tell them about the pregnancy.

One pair is a man and a woman, and the woman sounds to be on the younger side. She’s crying hysterically, and he’s trying to calm her down. Sometimes she can be heard shouting ‘I can’t go back in there,’ and he’ll calmly and firmly tell her that she has to. That aside, he sounds to be patient and otherwise soothing, but there’s not really anything else that can be definitively made out.

There’s a group of two men and one woman. After some listening it’s clear that the woman and one of the men have an eastern European accent, while the other man sounds to be American. They don’t sound pleased with each other. The Europeans are displeased with something the American’s company did. The phrase ‘your people’ comes up a lot from them, and it’s clear they’re chewing him out. Their discussion becomes more of an argument between the American and the woman, with the woman eventually snapping ‘your people let them die’ and they just start shouting at one another, with the European man trying to calm them both down. In the argument portion, the woman can also be heard accusing the American side as being weak, soft, and lenient. At one point the American will snap back and say ‘we’re talking about American citizens,’ and it sounds as though the lady laughs in his face. The European man explains something in a calmer voice, and it sounds as though someone storms off before everything goes quiet again.

There’s a group of multiple people, and it’s really too hard to tell how many there are. At least three men and two women, but there could be more. They’re talking steadily, quietly, and calmly. Whole sentences can never be picked up from what they’re saying, but words here and there will. The words that come up make it sound like they’re discussing dead people. A lot of dead people. A lot of the terms that are heard do not inspire confidence. Things like ‘succumbed to madness’ and ‘cut her own throat.’

Finally, there is a pair made up of a man and a woman, and their voices vary depending on who hears them. They’re never speaking English, and they never speak a language that the listener understands. They are arguing, violently. Lots of screaming, things breaking, sounds of a fight. If you sit and listen long enough, you’ll eventually hear one kill the other.

Trying to find the source of the voices never works. You might keep hearing them even as you run out of the room, but by the time you get to whatever room you think it’s coming from, they stop dead.

Happy Halloween.
