TIME UPDATE

Day 33.

Weather: Yup, there’s weather today. It’s gorgeous out. Temperatures are a little chilly (ranging in the low 50s during daylight hours), but the sun is shining brightly and there’s hardly a cloud in the sky.

Events: Regardless of where anyone fell asleep (or even if they meant to fall asleep), everyone wakes up in their own bed this morning. The good news is, they have power, and everything blocking the doors and windows are gone. The bad news is, no one can leave their rooms. Their doors and windows absolutely will not unlock or open, and they can’t even get into their bathrooms. At least they can open the curtains and enjoy the sunshine while they check their computers because, surprise surprise, there’s a message awaiting everyone.

Greetings.

For those of you interested in keeping track, we kept you confined for three days. We are now starting our thirty-third day of the experiment.

We are interested in determining how well you all know each other. How many of you have made a real effort to get to know your companions, and who hasn’t. We have devised a test to gage your understanding of each other.

When you close this message, you will see a series of quotations. All of these selections are things said by someone in the experiment. After each quote, you will have an opportunity to guess who said it. Your doors will not unlock until you finish this test, nor will you be able to access the network.

We will
not enforce participation in this test. You may answer however you like. It is up to you whether you choose to take this seriously and participate, or opt out and accept a punishment. Tomorrow, we will reward whichever individuals have the highest amount of correct guesses. Those with the most incorrect entries, as well as those who opted out of participation, will be punished.

Finally, we realize that several individuals are at an unfair advantage, having not been in the house for very long. Aspen, Gemma, and Erran are all new amongst your ranks, and we find it highly unlikely that they have enough personal knowledge of their surroundings and companions to do anything more than guess. With that in mind, these three will
not be punished for opting out, or for submitting a high percentage of incorrect entries. However, should they choose to try anyway, they may still be rewarded.

Yeah. It’s exactly as horrible as it sounds. Perhaps worse. Everyone can saddle up for an extremely uncomfortable couple of minutes.

Immediately after closing the message from TPTB, a quote appears on the screen. It can’t be closed, and other programs (such as the network) can’t be brought up. Beneath the quote is a text entry box, labeled simply, Who said it?

The quotes appear one at a time, so nobody has the option of reading the whole list over, and then deciding how they want to answer. Once an answer is submitted, the next one pops up, and there’s no going back. It is possible not to answer, to simply leave any question blank and hit the submit button. There is also no character limit. People can type as much or little as they like.

The quotes:

  • "Chase seems like an easy enough target; I almost wonder if it'd be too easy."

  • "Chase is a crazy motherfucker."

  • "I met Chase and he seems like a good guy, though Marco did write he thought Chase was working with Them."

  • "What the hell is Chase even doing? It's crazy."

  • "Maybe not Chase himself, but using him to get to his friends could be fun."

  • "Long as Chase is in the house I won't be the hottest guy.”

  • "Really? [Chase?] That's the dude you're into? Dude looks like a seal pup with eyelashes."

  • ”I don't know Chase very well, but I'm going to go ahead and guess he did what he did because, like me, the idea that his privacy and already compromised sense of safety had been so ruthlessly violated by one of our own was so disgusting, so horrifying, that he had to take any measure he could to get back that tiny bit of control you took from him. You have sunken to an entire new level of filth with this one, and you've got nobody to blame but yourself."

  • "I've totally gotten around, just not since I've been here. Sadly. I was even in bed with Chase this morning and nothing."

  • "I was talking to Chase, and he's hurt, but he did that to himself."

  • "Chase is shy, but wants to help, and will step forward and offer suggestions even when it seems to cause him discomfort to do so. I think he's becoming surer of himself, though."

  • "Anyone else think [Cecilia]'s got lips made for dick sucking?"

  • "Jesus [Cecilia] needs to get impregnated fast see if she can focus on taking care of her own children instead of everyone else's."

  • "There's a nurse, her name's Cecilia. You'll definitely meet her, she tries to look out for everybody and she's kind of the de facto boss—nobody officially decided on it and she's not thrilled about it, but people do look to her."

  • "I'm not sure what Cecilia had planned in the beginning, but the people here obviously recognize her as the one in charge."

  • "I want to be there for Cecilia if she needs me, but I'm not equipped to be the one people depend on."

  • "They're still gonna look to Cecilia for a lot. It's probably ingrained now, and she's...got that sense of authority about her. I don't know if she can even help it."

  • "There were no good moves left, on Cecilia's end, and she busts her ass all the time trying to keep this place from turning into a George R. R. Martin novel."

  • "If you ever make [Cecilia] look the way she did yesterday because you couldn't man up when she needed you, we're going to have some problems."

  • "I don't know Jack all that well, but I think the whole food thing is his way of coping with everything."

  • "I guess if this was high school, [Jack would] definitely be Most Popular. And probably Best Hair."

  • "If anyone [is working with Them]… I don't even like thinking about this. It's too weird. It'd be Jack, someone everybody likes. Or is that how the antichrist is supposed to work?"

  • "I find Jack very interesting too. There has to be something beneath that chipper, joking exterior."

  • "I thought they were gonna go in a different direction with the survey, like if you mentioned a name they'd go make a special point out of hurting that person. Like, 'Oh, everybody likes Jack? Now Jack is in twenty-two pieces so everyone can have their very own!'"

  • "Jack's cooked just about every day. He's a chef and has just taken it upon himself to cook for anyone that wants to show up and eat it. You'll see him in the kitchen just about every day, and he seems to genuinely enjoy taking care of people in that way.”

  • "I'd pay for a front row seat the first time [Kiley] goes down on him."

  • "I think Kiley has bigger balls than me, you and Chase put together."

  • "Kiley scares me."

  • "They might be judging Chase and Kiley. How would we know? But I mean, it's a good thing, yeah. But it's also like, a bad thing. I guess sex is one thing, but if it's more than sex, eventually, that's just like, one more thing They can hurt you with. So I don't know. It's a double edged sword, or whatever the saying is."

  • "[Kiley is] So rude."

  • "[Kiley and I] took turns pegging people. Wish we'd seen you! Would have invited you up."

  • "I can't believe you're comparing Jack to Pam. It's like comparing apples to, I don't know, unicorn poop."

  • "Honestly, I feel like Pam is a bulldog disguised as a puppy."

  • "Pam could lose it any day now."

  • "We can probably coax Pam back out of her shell. We'll make her feel wanted and important."

  • "I change my mind about [Pam] probably three times a day. Sometimes I still feel like she's not really a bad person, just unbelievably naive. Jury's still out in my mind."

  • "Those surveys shed some light on the way people think a little, though. Like Pam. Well meaning but ultimately self centered.”

  • "Don't feel bad about Pam. Truth hurts. did you notice a pattern there with some of the answers? either she'll learn from it, or she'll just continue to be who she is. Maybe the answers could have been worded "nicer" but how long are people supposed to sugar coat? I don't know."

  • "I wouldn’t say [Pam and I are] close, but we’ve hung out. I didn’t want to be one of the people who doesn’t treat her well, so I sought her out one day. It was nice."

  • "Pam scares me. Can you imagine her being in charge of people? For like, anything? I'd move into town and live alone in one of those scary houses."

  • "Of all the people in the house, Pam's probably number two on the list of who everyone wants to shoot."

  • "I like how [Pam] thinks she’s extremely normal and well-adjusted though, don’t you?"

  • "I noticed [Pam] likes to insult people and then add a quick laugh and 'I'm just kidding' along with it, so you're the asshole if you get pissed at her. Either she's an evil genius, or she really has no idea what she's doing. I'm not sure which is worse."

  • "Pam was like, the cleaning Nazi. She scared me, but honestly, I'm glad she was kind of aggressive about it."

  • "Owen is sort of Cecilia's second-in-command, but he hardly talks to anyone else."

  • "I don't know. I mean, have you seen Owen and Oliver? Those guys are cut. I always feel self conscious next to guys like them. But it's fine. That's life."

  • "A calendar’s a great idea. My vote is to get Chase, Oliver and Owen for the three months of summer so we can make ‘em take their shirts off."

  • ""I've come to trust Owen, and that's been a slow journey. There are people in the house that I respect, like, or at least appreciate, but I don't put anything above these people."

  • ”Yeah, well, that Owen dude's kind of a prick."

  • "But it's just nice to have [Juno] sitting there with me, and to hear her voice..."

  • "Strange, that nearly everyone was dead against Juno receiving a gun from Them, but no one seems to care that Pam has a real crossbow in her room. And just between you and me, Juno seems much more stable."

  • "Be careful with [Juno]. She's got some damage. Don't do anything to make it worse."

  • "Juno's a great girl, and she's tough, but there's only so much crap someone can take."

  • "Yeah, [Juno’s] cute, but I don't get that want to jump your bones vibe from her. I think I'm probably friend-zoned there."

  • "Well, great. I'm gonna go ahead and guess that's not the last time the two of them will have to be pulled apart, because Marco appears to have zero survival instincts."

  • "People wanted to help [Marco], multiple times, and he basically said 'fuck you'. At some point, you have to concede defeat."

  • "It seems like Marco's a special case on a number of levels."

  • "It's probably really awesome [for Marco] to be numb after a lifetime of feeling things so much more intensely than the average person. That doesn't mean it's a good thing, and it doesn't mean it's not going to kill him."

  • "It seems to me he's becoming harsher and more dangerous. Some of that I'll attribute to this messed up experience we're all going through, but like you said: he's not the only one with issues. He's not the only one going through this messed up experience. And the less stable he is on his meds, the deeper he is in the dope, the less I think he remembers that. He finds new ways to justify behavior that I personally find to be unacceptable."

  • "The parts of [Marco[ I knew first, made it so when i knew the rest of it I couldn't just fuck off with my conscience clean, you know what I mean?"

  • "I'd like to say Marco learned something, but I'm fresh out of hope for that one."

  • "Marco is a pretty selfish guy, but I get the feeling he's been in this weird place between preservation and escapism for so long that he doesn't even realize how bad it is. It makes me wonder what kind of guy he could be straight and sober."

  • "Marco irritates the hell out of me, but I don't want to see the guy dead."

  • "I think [Marco’s] only beginning to trust me, and I've been working on him since I got here."

  • "I have a thing for guys [like Marco] who are awkward and probably virgins."

  • "Knowing Lennon, he was probably just pretending to be scared to get some scared bunny cuddles."

  • "Lennon's a really funny and chill kid so I got lucky there, but I just want to take like, fifty hot showers."

  • "I don't like Lennon like *that*, if you were wondering."

  • "Lennon's good too. I don't think he knows how to stay mad at people."

  • "Look, Cecilia and Lennon and Jack are all young and healthy. They're seriously sick, but I have trouble believing that they're going to die in two days, frankly."

  • "People like me, or Juno, or Lennon, we're gonna get institutionalized."

  • ”I met Juliet... She's really pretty, and has the room next to mine, and she had no pants on and I'm not sure if she was flirting with me. I think she was flirting with me. I'm really bad at knowing if people are flirting with me. We went swimming.”

  • "I would trust [Tobias’] judgment. He's like a dog that loves almost everyone, but knows the ones to avoid. And I mean that in the nicest way possible."

  • ”Tobias is cute in that nervous, twitchy way but IDK if he swings that way.”

  • "Daphne seems scary on the network.”

  • "[Daphne’s] one of those people that is too pretty to be a writer. It's almost rude. You look that good on the outside and you're brilliant?"

  • "UGH I can see what they meant about Madison, I can see her zoning in on that priest."

  • "Avram did all the hard work, you know."

  • "Man, we need to send Avram a fruit basket or something. Or we would if there wasn't a disappointing lack of florists around here. He's great."

  • "Avram said something like that, but I don't think he's really serious. Maybe it'd keep him occupied, I don't know. He seemed to be a busy thinker. Monkey-mind."

  • "[Avram’s] actually really cool. Nice, considerate. Kind of nerdy but I wouldn’t say that’s a problem. He’s probably like, forty?"

  • "[Kate] really liked having my piercing in her mouth."

  • "If you're really interested, you should talk to Kate. Bubbly little blonde. She's a sweetheart. Knows her stuff."

  • "Speaking of dicks, that Oliver dude's got a huge one."

  • "Oliver seems to be a real sturdy guy. He and I had a short talk today, and I guess I liked him."

  • "Oliver's another really good dude, ex-military, who tends to be in charge of stuff like...replacing windows."

  • "[Oliver is] my pick for anything that involves physical labor."

  • "I think it's Oliver's room. He's old, so I'm sure he'll be asleep, right?"

  • "Did you know Damon has a piercing in his dick?"

  • "Yeah, [Damon] seems nice, He's also not very modest, which is totally cool and everything, if you're into that."

  • "[Damon] seems really...comfortable with himself. Not like...egotistical, just...comfortable. Like he really doesn't care what anyone thinks."

  • "I think I overstayed my welcome in [Damon’s] room, and he got impatient."

  • "[Damon] said something, I take it? One night thing, nothing serious. Or repeated, thus far."

  • "[Georgie is] a hoot. She's super out there, but I usually don't even like people like her and I think she's just really interesting."

  • "Then the priest came along and got shot too and kinda fell on me and then cussed a blue streak. I didn't know priests could be that cool."

  • "Edwin's a good guy."

  • "[Edwin’s] gonna have a creepy doll museum in his room. You meet some interestin' people here."

  • "We got ourselves a new guy today. Edwin. Seems pretty keen to help."

  • "[Erran will] be incredibly useful, but it's important that we don't swamp him."

  • "[Erran] asked me how he could help and I just kind of laughed at my computer for a minute."

  • "There's a therapist here. I feel bad for him already."

  • "The thing about counselors is that it's always easier when the heavy stuff is happening to someone else. I don't think self-diagnosis helps anyone, no matter how good they are at their jobs."

  • That was excruciating, was it not? And just when you think it’s over, it’s not. After submitting the answer to the last quote, the doors and windows audibly unlock, but another message appears on the screen.

”This is an optional question, for bonus points. Neglecting to submit a guess for this question will not increase your chance of punishment. However, getting it right could lessen your punishment, or eliminate it entirely.

Since the experiment began 33 days ago, eight individuals have had some form of sexual contact with each other. All eight individuals are still in the experiment. Identify the pairs or groups.”

Additionally, Maurya has been removed from the experiment.
