TIME UPDATE

Day 5.

Weather: Yesterday’s ‘light sprinkles’ are today’s ‘constant downpour.’ Before the sun ever comes up the rain picks up in earnest, and shows absolutely no sign of stopping. The winds pick up in the evening and there’s the occasional rumble of thunder in the night hours.

Events: Once again, everyone who fell asleep anywhere but in their own room wakes up - you guessed it - back in their own room. That’s probably not terribly surprising, considering it’s been the norm for four out of five mornings in this place. But hey, did you know there was a PA system in the institute? No? Don't feel bad, no one did. At 4 AM, it crackles loudly into life from unseen speakers somewhere in the ceiling - of absolutely every room. There's a bit of feedback, lasting only seconds long, and then a sort of... humming, buzzing sound. It's not terribly loud, but it's not the sort of thing you can ignore, either. If anyone's hoping this development means they're finally about to hear a human voice from someone in charge, guess again. The sound just continues. And continues. And hey, continues some more.

Actually, that strange humming sound is going to keep on going for exactly 24 hours.

What does this mean? Well, your guess is good as anyone else's in this place. Like we said, the sound isn't very loud - just loud enough to keep any light sleepers from sleeping. Not so loud you have to yell over it to be heard, but loud enough to drown out a whisper of someone a foot away from you. Basically, just loud enough to get real annoying, real fast. There will also be occasional crackles or temporary shifts in volume to keep anyone from getting used to it. Oh, and for those keeping tabs? It’s not really possible to leave the house today for any extended period of time. Visibility is terrible, and the road isn’t at all safe. Someone wouldn’t get far before realizing attempting the trek into town is a bit of a deathwish. What’s more, none of the bedrooms or bathrooms have music or DVD players - and the computers aren’t equipped to play DVDs. So, just putting a movie on and turning the volume up to drown it out is only going to be possible in a public room. Have fun with that.

But wait! There’s more!

When Marco first goes on his computer today, he’s going to receive a message. The message light isn’t blinking, nor is it like receiving a PM from another subject. It’s simply going to pop up on the screen after he tries to log in to the network for the first time today. It reads:

“We would like to make a deal with you. We will provide you with a steady supply of what you need most, but in return you will occasionally be instructed to do something for us. If you refuse even once, we will never help you again.

This is the only opportunity you will ever have in the program to get your drugs. Alternatively, if you so desire, we could provide you with a steady dose of medication to help you quit using and get clean. That choice would be entirely up to you.

Your first task will be to tell
no one of this offer. If you speak of it to a single person within the group, we will withdraw our deal from the table and make no such offer again.

If you accept our terms, you need only to indicate which it is you desire: your drug, or a clean start. Make your choice and speak it aloud. If you hold up your end of the bargain, we’ll be in touch.

This offer will only be made to you once, so think hard before giving an answer.”

Who: Eddi and Juno.
Where: Game room.
When: Around 11:30A.

After the day they had, Eddi was surprised she could even make the walk back to the house, but she was definitely glad that they were able to at all. She tried to stay up as long as she could, but a little bit after the sunset, she had konked out in her bedroom.

...Until that buzzing sound started.
