Gaynor's John (Finished)

Cut for length )

He'd gone swimming in his new pool, hauling himself out of the water when he heard the ping from the lift announcing someone had decided to visit. He made a mental note to add motion sensors and an alarm to the lobby. Careless not to have done so already, but nothing to be done about it now.

He wrapped a towel around his waist, heading for the door out of the pool as the lift opened to let out its passenger. The Master smiled serenely, pushing open the door. "Ah, John, how good of you to return. I expect you've been behaving yourself?"

The Doctor woke up with a hangover, stumbled downstairs, read what was left of the Master's note in the lobby, and knew exactly what it about. He slipped his own note under Rose's door. Then went in the dining hall to nurse a pot of tea. And to sit their determinately until the Master showed up.

He was going to be waiting for a while. It was far too early and he knew that. He didn't want to move, with his headache. He also didn't want to miss the Master somehow.

Seeing Jack had been good. More than good. And he had managed to sleep longer than he had in a solid month, although he was sure he still looked like shit.

It also hadn't made everything magically better. He was, he thought ruefully to himself, far too sane to conflate the two Jacks enough to instantly make a a major dent in his emotional state.

The Master shuffled along, back in his overcoat, but gloves in his pocket not on his hands, re-acquainting himself with the layout of the town. It was a ways from dusk, yet.

Rose wandered back towards the hotel, her heart hurting for her Doctor, who might well know, having been here before, that there might have been a way to save Gallifrey, if he'd gotten lucky. For the Koschei she had met and his Doctor, for being seperated from each other - no matter how worthy the cause. Thinking about possibilities she liked even less.

So lost in thought, she nearly bumped into someone, going into the hotel door.

"Oh, sorry! Should look where I'm going," she apologized.
