When Seifer heard the rumors of a ghostly wolf up by Trabia, he badgered Squall into sending him out to investigate. It wasn't the first time he'd heard of the White Wolf: the first time he ever went out to the cold wastes as a trainee had been in search of this potential GF. He hadn't found it then, and was not going to screw up his second chance at it.

She wasn't at all like he expected. Amaterasu had more personality than the GF's he'd had before and settled into his mind with an amused huff, claiming him completely.

Rinoa would not let him stay lost. She had no idea how to really use her power, but no matter the cost, she would bring him home. She took a deep breath and opened herself up to the universe.

She could see the thread connecting Sorceress and Knight like a shining thread and followed it. She ignored hellish visions of alternate realities, focusing only on coaxing the bond to stay attuned.

Rinoa finally found him on a dusty plateau, collapsed on the ground. When she touched his arm gently, he opened bright blue eyes.

“I... want to be forgiven.”

Edea sighed. She had been gone from this place for too long. The orphanage was in ruins, and Cid's optimistic platitudes couldn't change that, or fix it, either. She walked aimlessly until her eyes spotted something on the floor. Carefully she knelt to pick it up. It was a toy knight, the horse missing a leg, the lance half broken. It must have been dropped by an over-excited child and forgotten until now. She had to blink back sudden tears as she cradled it, knowing full well the symbolism. Like her, like her home, it had been broken over time.

In such close quarters, Seifer's sneering disdain was like a heavy hand at the back of Zell's neck. It made him fidget worse than he usually did, as his subconscious tried to distract him. The fidgeting brought on crude remarks. The crude remarks were punctuated by the laughter of Fujin and Raijin. The laughter made Zell's fists ball up until his nails dug into his palms. The teacher looked up, but was unwilling to cross the trio, and went back to his lecture. Zell stared at his terminal, determined to get through this class without getting another detention for fighting.

A/N: I take a little liberty with Rinoa's second overdrive...

Squall and Rinoa had been ambushed by an overly aggressive Propagator, and the fight was not going well. She felt even more useless than before, her little weapon doing little damage to the beast's hide. Trying to catch her breath, she watched the monster rush forward and knock Squall off his feet.

She screamed in terror, and felt something in her break loose and soar free.

She screamed in anger, and felt powerful wings unfold from her back. Power flooded her tiny frame, and spells she had only read about in legends heeded her call and blasted the monster away.

Cid felt his conscience prick him every time he signed an order. One of the children could be hurt, or even killed, if he did not pick them correctly, or if the situation got out of hand. But they wouldn't grow if he sheltered them, so he choked back his sighs and signed his name. Then he went out and strangled his guilt so he could give them inspirational speeches. Then he carefully held his hands steady and gave crushing handshakes either for support or congratulations over a job well done.

Then he went back to his office and cried.

He saw shrinks for anger management all the time at Balamb, part of Cid's continuous attempts to rehabilitate him into a good little SeeD. Seifer would sneer and roll his eyes at the mealy-mouthed “It's a poison that will eat you from the inside out,” platitudes.

“If it's poison, I never want to find the antidote,” he'd snapped once, after a bad day with Squall's stony face constantly in his vision. He wanted to punch something, to spread his poison around until everyone was as sick as he was.

When the sorceress offered him that chance, he took it.
