While black dogs are not the most unique animals in the world, Remus always thought of Sirius when he spotted one. It had been tough back in the real world; he'd see someone walking his or her dog or spy a wild dog running through the alleys and all the memories would jolt him into a world he sometimes wanted badly to forget. He felt the same whenever he saw a stag or heard mention of one, but what could he do? Life went on even in the face of tragedy. However, as the years dragged on and the war loomed, the memories weighed on Remus more heavily. How could Sirius betray them? Learning Sirius hadn't done anything wrong was the most bittersweet day of Remus' life. On one hand, if he had to choose, he guessed it was better Peter had been the betrayer. Even with James long dead, Remus knew had Sirius truly turned the Potters in, James' heart would have been broken far worse. That isn't to say Remus believed Peter's choice hurt James less, but he also recognized Sirius and James' relationship was slightly different. More intense maybe? Still, for Remus? Peter's betrayal hurt more. Where the four had been the Marauders, Sirius had been Jame's best mate. Peter had been his. It hurt in ways he wasn't sure he was allowed to speak on to anyone.
And now? Everyone was talking about a sickly looking black dog. How could Remus and James
not think of Sirius? James said maybe it was because they wanted him here so badly, but Remus wasn't sure. Sure, animals roamed the village, but dogs and cats? They didn't tend to run wild here. Charlie might have been right; this dog might have escaped during the monster attack, but...
Remus had a feeling that wasn't the case. James and Lily seemed to confirm his suspicions; hence, when Mike Corner wrote about the dog and James wanted to go looking, Remus obliged. They searched once before that week, but with little luck.
Maybe they were insane. It was starting to feel that way as the night stretched on. Remus sighed and tapped James on the elbow as they neared the gardens. "Want to take one last sniff, Prongs?" He smiled, but his heart went out to his friend. Remus was unsure about seeing Sirius again, but he knew how much it would mean to James and for that? He wanted this dog to be Sirius.
