The adrenaline that had kept him going since his escape from prison had dissipated, only to be replaced by exhaustion mingled with aches and pains and a lingering dread acquired from years of being imprisoned around Dementors. The bedroom he was in was larger than his cell, and even though he knew he could walk out that door any time he wanted, he could easily do so, that he could get something to drink that wasn't muddled or even go to the toilet in a proper loo instead of hole in the floor... that lingering dread put him in anxiety that he was still locked away. Damn it. He reached for the chocolate bar on his nightstand and shoved some into his mouth, devouring it while barely chewing.
He wiped his chocolatey hands on his shirt, then realized how sloppy that was, then decided he didn't care. He had other, more pressing things on his mind. The journal lay open beside him on the bed, words appearing by magic on the pages in response to his comments and questions. Names he hadn't heard in years and others who were introducing themselves for the first time. But one name reverberated in his brain: Peter. He was here.
Last night, when he was getting cleaned up, he asked Remus to cut off all his hair before he bathed: it was long, dirty and matted and reminded him of prison. Losing it was like a weight taken off his shoulders, figuratively and literally, but he was still not used to it being gone, for he instinctively reached to run his fingers through his hair out of frustration, but finding none. Sirius sighed and stared out the window - glass panes and no bars. He felt the sudden need to go out even though his body protested. He stood up from where he sat at the edge of his bed, but at the same time the door to his bedroom opened.
