Sirius stared at the keys of the piano. He had been debating playing for hours. All day, really. He'd had a bet with Lorcan about it - something about learning the guitar and playing a song more complicated than Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. It was a bet he hadn't really thought would come to fruition. As much as he really did enjoy Lorcan, the piano was something far more complicated than an instrument. It was what he'd been battling with since the darn thing showed up Christmas day. Finally, last night, he had asked if he could play it. Today, he was sitting at it. His fingers drifted across the keys - the ivory and black keys that always seemed the same no matter the piano they belonged to. After what seemed like hours of debate - a part of him telling him to shut the cover and walk away, while the other felt the compulsion to play - his finger pressed down against the middle c. It sounded just like he remembered. Resentment welled up within him and warred against the comfort he felt. Still, without thinking, his fingers continued. It had been years, but they had yet to forget some things. They remembered well the Moonlight Sonata he had adored so much as a kid. It was rocky at first, remembering all the keys, remembering when he was supposed to use the pedals and which one. He could feel the pain in his knuckles from where his tutor used to strike him when he played the wrong note on purpose. His memory, as much as he desired to reject it, would surface. That is until, of course, he heard movement down the hall. Then it was right back to Mary Had A Little Lamb like he promised. |
