Heave... Ho... Heave... Aw, Forget It

Who: Loren and Paige
When: 2pm and onward
Where: Lobby and then the bar

As Loren took the last step leading downward to the ground floor, he heaved a sigh and threw his hands up into the air, as dramatic as he could be in hopes that this would drive his point home. "Okay, love, really... this 'as been loads of fun an' all, but can we please not do this anymore today? The one load is killin' me arms." The whine was said in relatively light humor, given that they had been getting on fairly well since they'd started working on this project. The aim had been to get enough bricks to the rooftop to start building a fire pit for cooking, but after just one journey to the top of the hotel, things weren't looking so hot. Loren had just about had his fill of exercise for a lifetime, and if Paige insisted on carrying more...? Well, then... he'd just go off and take a nap or something.

Anything other than what they had been doing would be better.

"Look, I'll even buy you a drink. Just please don't make me go back up there again tonight." He gave her his best pouting face, a true procrastinator at heart despite it all. Why do it themselves when there were other, bigger people lounging around that would eventually have to find something useful to do? "Don't we 'ave a furry critter runnin' around 'ere what can take care of it?" he asked, glancing around as though expecting to see this 'furry critter' he'd been speaking of. She wasn't anywhere in sight, though, and he grinned. "C'mon, then. Let's go an' raid the drinks."

Attempting to Fly

Who: Verity, Rowan, Terry, Paige, Zane
Where: An abandoned parking lot with plenty of barbed wire fencing
When: Late morning, coming up towards noon

Verity was very jumpy. He was sure Rowan was as wary as he was being out here, but he didn't think his companion was jumping out of his skin every time the hot, heavy air moved a plastic bag too loudly. He wasn't sure because he kept looking every direction but at Rowan, hoping to not have to see the younger man's quite deserved scorn. He tried to calm down a bit, but the walking stick he'd found (a good sight easier to swing around than the poker) kept springing up almost on its own. He wished he'd been able to sleep a little more. He might be feeling a bit less, well, insane. Resting the cane on his shoulder, he took a deep breath and another look around, still avoiding looking at Rowan. Maybe if he pretended hard enough to not be a dork, it would become true.

He spotted what he'd been looking for then. Verity had spent a lot of time since he'd witnessed Rowan's attempts last night trying to decide what the best place would be. They needed space, they needed something big enough to jump off of and small enough that Rowan's probably weakened legs wouldn't break in the likely event of impact. And they needed someplace as secure as they could find. Rowan would be busy. He'd seen his friend's concentration before. And that meant Verity would have to try and make sure that he didn't injure himself. Which really didn't leave anyone to watch for monsters, and Liah had to be home to watch the kids. This whole adventure was ill-considered and irresponsible, and Verity felt terrible for going at all.

That said, he wanted to see Rowan fly. And now he saw an opportunity. "There!" First thing he'd said in a while. He pointed with his trusty stick. The parking lot was only about a quarter full, the cars mostly concentrated in one corner. The fence was high and topped by barbed wire. And the gate had a fairly complex latch on it. "I think that's the best we'll find. We can try there." He pushed his rather sweaty hair back as he pointed, looking over at Rowan with a bit of a grin. He couldn't help being excited.

And falling flat on your face. )

Who: Amberlee, Paige, and Terry
When: Day 2, 7:45am
Where: Detroit streets in search of a drug store.

Amberlee took off at a pace from the bar eager to find a solution to her problem. She hadn’t paused in hope that the others would follow her. She didn’t care if they did. Her wits were frayed. She was swinging on the end of her rope. More than anything else she desired some relief from the mental noise whirring about her mind, and so far no one had listened or helped in any way.

She walked with her head down guarding images of the surrounding dead scattered about the pavements and, simmering in the cars. It wasn’t out of any sort of necessity to do so however. The fact was she wasn’t seeing much of what was around her anyway; so distracted by her own internalization. By the time Paige even caught up to her stern march she had broken into her two times table, her hushed breath working through them with a purpose. "Two times two is four, two times three is six, two times four is eight..." Despite the oddity, she found it helped a lot. "I'm not going back," She interrupted herself to speak defiantly at Paige. "I can’t just sit around anymore." Her voice was shaky unlike the day before, stress evident in the frailty of her voice.

A new day has come...

Who: Paige, Amberlee, Alan, Juan and Joyce
When: August 23nd, 2015, Day Two, early morning, around 7:30 am
Where: The Underground (bar)

Joyce had set her iTouch to beep at seven, and though it did, she didn't stir, at first. Her body, too tall for her to be comfortable on one of the couches, was lying on the floor on its side, back to the wall, gym bag under her head for a pillow. It had been warm enough that she Hadn't bothered trying to find anything to cover herself the night before. She'd slept in her clothes, her small backpack strapped over her shoulders, across her chest, so she was hugging it. If they had to move suddenly during the night, she'd only have to grab her gym bag.

This was all she had left. Nothing as interesting as a violin or a guitar, but her life was currently in those two bags and her pockets. She thought about going home, but it would be a long walk and to what end? At the moment, daily survival was more important.

And making sure as many of them got to a safe place as possible.

They'd found some food the night before, albeit items raided from a few of the neighboring restaurants. The calorie count was high, but who cared? The food would have just gone bad, otherwise...

The beeping became more insistent. Joyce sighed and slowly opened her eyes - and confirmed what her nose and back were telling her: She was on the floor of a bar, and what had happened yesterday had been real. She reached into her knapsack and fiddled with the iTouch. Was anyone else awake?
