Hatching's a messy kinda business

Who: Tayne and Taylor
Where: Taylor's room
When: Afternoon

With a twitching and shaking egg in the crook of one arm, and a half-empty platter of meat on the other hand, Tayne didn't have much left to knock with. He looked helplessly at Taylor's room, and rather than kicking it, like he'd done for Dhaval, he finally called through the door, "Taylor? You in there?" He hoped to hell she was. He wasn't sure he had time to hunt her down through the whole hotel, before this damn egg hatched all over him.

I'm curious what'll come outa this one. )

The Eggs and Us

Who: Taylor and Tayne
Where: Outside the hotel
When: Mid-morning

For the first time in several days, Taylor was really feeling like her old self again. After being brushed off by the preacherman, she'd given up trying to be included in the rescue party and had used the time to totally allow herself to recharge. She'd read some of her comics again, but she'd gotten plenty of sleep, too, probably the first really good sleep she'd gotten in three weeks.

With the morning, though, she was back to her old worry-wart self again. She didn't know if anyone had made it back the day before yet, or if they had, what shape they were in. Figuring if anyone had come back they needed their rest, she headed outside. She knew approximately where Tayne's truck was, but she wasn't as concerned about where it was as she was about the condition of its precious cargo- the monster eggs. She didn't know what kind of shape they'd be in after being neglected for so long, but monster or not, they were still babies, and needed to be checked on.

So many things to do, so little time to do them in.... )

Feelings of Freedom

Who: Taylor and Rowan
Where: The roof
When: Mid-afternoon

Taylor was more than a little winded by the time she made it up the stairs to the roof. She didn't know what she was thinking, coming all the way up here. All she knew was that between being sick and just generally being afraid of what was out there, she had to get out and get some fresh air. She hadn't been up here since her picnic with Mini a few days ago and was starting to get cabin fever.

The little meeting they'd had earlier didn't exactly make her feel any better. Four of their little group, including Tayne, were still missing from the other night, and 2 more people weren't doing too well at all. She didn't feel like she had much right to complain about her spider bite after she'd heard what had happened to them. There was talk of a rescue party, and while she wanted to help out, she wasn't entirely sure she was healthy enough to really be of much use, especially after getting worn out by climbing the stairs.

All that melted away, though once she opened the door. The air didn't feel like it used to, and while the smells of death were fading, they were still there. But feeling the light breeze on her skin and the sun on her face made her feel better than she had in days. She stepped out more fully into the sunlight and smiled, feeling alive.

Like it was before we came in and messed it all up. )

Getting better all the time

Who: Tayne and Taylor
Where: Taylor's room
When: Morning

After dropping Dhaval off in the bar, and leaving a note on Verity's little announcement on the wall downstairs, Tayne climbed up to the second floor. First floor. The one-hundred floor, whichever number it was in floor groups. He stopped by his own room first, picking up his notebook and a pen, and then, since it was right there and easy to get to, by Taylor's room. He hadn't seen her since before he got sick, he didn't think anyway, and he did want to see how she was doing.

Besides, he didn't really want to tackle the next flight of stairs right away....

So, you're gonna be a momma, eh? )

Who: Mini and Taylor
Where: The roof
When: Noonish, Day 11

"Thank God there's not a lot of wind today," Taylor said as she smoothed out the blanket she'd stolen from the laundry room. It wasn't pretty, but it would do nicely. She wanted everything to be perfect today. Looking around, she found a couple of cinderblocks she could use to hold it down, just in case. They were a bit heavier than she expected and she grunted a little as she got them into place. "There. Perfect."

She double checked the "basket" she'd brought up- an abandoned suitcase with no name tag on it. She preferred it that way. It felt less like stealing with no name tag, and she didn't wonder nearly as much about what had happened to the previous owner this way either. She'd filled it with what she thought was some decent food: cheese, some summer sausage she'd socked away, a few crackers, and a couple of melons she'd found that had managed to not be too soft. It wasn't bird-monster steak, since Tayne had finished the last of it the night before, but it would be nice, and she didn't think she'd taken more than her and Mini's fair share. She'd even snagged a bottle of wine from the bar. She knew that a lot of people in the States would frown on a person her age drinking wine, but her mother had never minded if she had a glass now and then. Not that she cared.

Taylor finished setting up the place settings carefully. She didn't want to break any and have to run all the way back down to the kitchen again. She wasn't in that good shape. But nothing broke, and now all she had to do was wait. She'd slid a note under Mini's door that morning, which she'd written in both French and English in an attempt to teach her a bit of English. She'd asked Mini to meet her on the roof at noon, but didn't tell her why exactly. Just to "dress for the weather," which Mini had done. She was dressed in a somewhat nice skirt and blouse she'd found, and had even made an attempt at doing her hair in something besides her usual sloppy ponytail. While she waited, she paced a little, keeping an eye on both the door and the skies, in case any bird-monsters decided to take their revenge. She wished she still had the gun she'd gotten from Tayne, just in case, but she was hoping for the best. She checked her watch, then checked it again just to make sure. "Okay, Supergirl, let's not fuck this one up, eh?" she said to herself as she looked over the horizon.

Cooking Lessons

Who: Tayne and Taylor
Where: The kitchen
When: 11:30 am, Day 10

After dealing with the eggs, getting in a shower, and chowing down on a little cereal from the stores, Tayne was ready to get to work. He didn't think the ovens in the great hotel kitchen were still working, so he brought his own little dutch oven in from the trailer and set it over a burner. Thank god for gas-powered stovetops. He could just sear the bird meat... but he'd have to actually bake the bread, so he needed an oven, even a primitive one.

With his giant bag of flour, the last of the milk and eggs, and the melted butter, he got to work on dough. It didn't take him long to get into the rhythm of cooking. It was soothing, and something of a relief to just lose one's self in something simple and familiar. It'd been a long time since he'd actually baked bread, but hopefully he hadn't forgotten anything.

Finally leaving the first load of bread to rise, he took a brief break for more cereal. He hadn't eaten much over the course of the past day or two, and now he was definitely hungry.

If we ever get TV back, I nominate you for a cooking show, okay? Iron Chef Apocalypse. )

So Much Potential, Or So We Used To Say

Who: Terry, Tayne, Taylor, Verity and Pepper
When: 7:30am and onward til about noon
Where: 45 minutes North of the hotel at a grocery store

Terry fumbled with the clean bandages he'd replaced earlier that morning, half of his forehead hidden by them. The wound he'd endured on his trip to the hospital was healing, albeit slowly... but at least they'd been successful. He, Zane and Landon had brought back literally backpacks full of medical supplies, antibiotics, needles, pain relievers... Terry only hoped that today's venture to the grocery store would be just as successful. The small group he'd organized was directed to bring empty bags with them, and as Terry waited in the lobby he fussed with the two backpacks hanging on one shoulder. The walk to the grocery wouldn't take more than an hour, he imagined, but it was going to be dangerous.

For that reason, the handgun Terry had procured a week ago was tucked safely into the back of his jeans. He didn't dare leave the hotel unarmed.

We've got to get out of here! )

Alive Inside?

Who: Tayne, Taylor, and Jasmine
Where: The hotel, outside and then inside
When: Mid-afternoon

It hadn't taken that long to get cleaned up and changed. Tayne had rummaged around in the house they raided for clean clothes that fit Taylor-- only to find she had extras, herself. Real smart. Well, it was the thought that counted, right? While she rinsed and changed, he got them lunch and added some snacks and plenty of water for later. Who knew how long the water would last, anyhow?

Then they were off again. Walking, this time, which kept them slower but also kept them quieter. Tayne mostly went in the direction he heard gunfire, but they only actually found the results of it once-- the dead monster. Or, well, the results of once that actually worked. It was possible that the others had resulted in the monster winning and dragging the losing human off to munch on someplace dark and quiet.

When they spotted the "alive inside" sign on the top of the high-ride building after a couple hours, though, that became their destination. Tayne was looking for survivors, and now for a safe place for Taylor, and that seemed like a good place to look. It took them a while to get there, and Tayne was cautious as he approached, his axe unhooded and his motorcycle parked a little ways back, out of the way.

Hope these aren't looters aiming to steal our shit )

Rescue!

Who: Taylor and Tayne
When: Mid-morning
Where: Downtown
What: Taylor’s car breaks down and havoc ensues, requiring a timely rescue by Tayne

Taylor was not particularly happy. After surviving for 4 days in post-monstergeddon Chicago, slowly making her way out of town and managing to get a car to get her to Canada, the car had finally given up the ghost in Detroit, of all places. She wasn’t sure exactly what was wrong with her inherited vehicle, but the smoke coming from underneath the hood wasn’t exactly a sign of good things to come. Getting out of the car, she popped the hood, looking around to make sure the coast was clear first. She didn’t really know a lot about cars, but if it was something she could make work for a little while…

Raising the hood, the smoke immediately covered her as it escaped, causing her to release a particularly blasphemous string of curses in her native Quebecois. “Of all the stupid, idiotic… you couldn’t even wait until we got out of the country?” she asked the car as she slammed the hood down in frustration. Well, this wasn’t going to get her any further. Looking ahead, she wondered how far the car would’ve gotten anyways, with all the bodies and abandoned vehicles in the road, especially now that she was in the heart of downtown.

Good aim. )
