Sharing Stories in the Bar

Who: Tayne and Dhaval
Where: Dhaval's room, then the bar, then the room again
When: Late afternoon, early evening

The very last steak of the day, Tayne paid extra attention to. He used every trick he'd learned about cooking them over the course of the afternoon, to make it taste its best, and then he gave the last couple dishes a scrub, put the last few loaves of bread in the fridge and the cupboard respectively, and turned everything off. The eggs had been taken care of, turned once that morning and once that afternoon, taking a break from cooking to get the battery out of a random Toyota in the parking lot, the truck engine had been revved and the space heater charged.

All that was left was his evening of food and drinks with Dhaval.

What a... thing. )

Who: Alex, Reiko, Neil, KJ
Where: Somewhere in Detroit, not incredibly far from the hotel
When: Day 10, mid-morning

Alex creeped through the cars in the middle of the street, keeping his eyes and ears open for monsters. They were all over the place this morning and he silently cursed the weather for making this day a dark one. He shouldn't even be out and about today, he should be somewhere safe to wait it out but who knows what tomorrow would be like? He had to get out of the city, or at least try and find other survivors. There just had to be some, right?

He hid behind a truck as he came to the intersection and looked around for any monsters before he crouched next to one of the tires to grab a bottle of water from his bag. Just as he put the bottle to his lips something large slammed into the roof of the truck, caving it in and shattered the windows. Alex instinctively rolled away from the truck, still in a crouching position and looked up at the intruder. It was, of course, a monster and one that still looked partially human if it weren't for his overly large arms and upper torso.

Alex froze, his heart rate and breathing increasing significantly. He wasn't sure he could even move, that was until the thing roared at him. He sprang to his feet and sprinted down the street just as the monster lunged for him. "Don't look, don't look, don't look..." Alex repeated over and over again to himself, he had seen enough horror movies to know that looking back at your would be assailant slowed you down enough for it to grab you so he kept running and tried to formulate a plan that would let him grab his gun to shoot the thing. Unfortunately, however, the monster ran fast and he didn't know how long he would be able to keep up his present pace and he seemed to have lost his ability to think fast for the time being. It was quite possible that he was going to die.

Food, glorious food...

Who: Tayne & Joyce
When: Day 10, Noon-ish
Where: The Hotel Kitchen

Joyce finished making a list of 'Things to Do', washed her face and the back of her neck with some of her water supply and put her auburn hair up in a clip. It was curling with the humidity and generally driving her crazy. She wished she could have a proper shower, but she wasn't in the mood for cold water at the moment. Her stomach growled. When was the last time she'd had a snack, just randomly, because she could? Those days were gone. She tucked the list and a pen into the pocket of her shorts and headed downstairs, looking to scrounge some food for lunch. If she thought of something else to add, she'd be able to write it down before the idea had a chance to skitter away.

There was a notice in the lobby and Joyce smiled as she turned for the dining area.

I, uh, kind of killed a bird-shaped monster when I was out the other day, and didn't want the meat to go waste when there's a lot of hungry people back here. )

WHO: KJ and OPEN.
WHERE: Fitness center.
WHEN: Day 10, mid-afternoonish.

Having decided to forego her morning forray into the big, brave new world, hunting for things to add to her collection, KJ decided that she could instead explore the layout of her new home. Starting with the ground floor- she had only really visited the lobby and the kitchen, and while those were important she was sure they were no the only places there. Passing through the bar, she took note of all the alcohol on the shelves (to take pictures of later, she was not a drinker), and the layout of the room. But it didn't particularly hold KJ's interest, so she moved on, pausing when she came upon a gym.

A gym, huh? Huh.

She had never been one to go out of her way to join a gym and get into the socially acceptable norm of fitness, although she did keep herself in good shape. But the room held KJ's interest. Although she was lifting the rocks with her mind, she still felt the strain in her muscles, as if by the virtual act of guiding them with her hands she were in fact lifting them with her arms. KJ supposed she would actually have to work out more often, now, to be able to keep up with the strain and not hurt herself. But the equipment looked daunting, and she had no idea what to do with most of it. Sit and stare? For the moment, she opted to stand and stare, taking it all in. Where to start?

The Pain That Lingers

Who: Megan and Joyce
When: Morning, Day 10 of the Apocalypse
Where: Megan's room

Megan really had no sense of how long it had been since the attack. While she'd managed to come out of things a little with Zane, she was still in her own happy little world inside herself most of the time. She had slept some, in fits and spurts, but the dreams had always been invaded by that voice, those hands, that breath, sending her further back again, starting to undo all the things that had been accomplished while Zane had been there. So now, she just lay there, like she had for several hours. Her head wasn't hurting as bad as it had before, although her ankle was still killing her. Beyond that, she just stared blankly at the ceiling- blankly even for her- and hummed and sang quietly to herself, only moving a bare minimum when she needed to. She was safe where she was. The Goddess was watching her, and She would protect her.

Megan? It was a bad thing that happened and it was... completely random and... not something specifically aimed at you. And Terry stopped it from going any further. )

Meat!

Who: A sign posted on the wall
Where: On the wall, in front of the stairwell door, ground floor
When: Noon and onwards

After cooking the first of the chicken-flavored steaks up and scarfing it down, him and Taylor, Tayne figured posting a sign would be a good idea. They couldn't keep the meat forever, so they probably ought to use as much as possible, at least until Tayne figured out how to smoke, salt, or otherwise preserve it. And once he figured that out, he could go hunting....

But that wouldn't help him now, to get rid of the surplus they had now. So he got himself some paper from behind the lobby desk, a permanent marker, and some tape, and posted the following in front of the stairwell door:

Free food: sauteed chicken-steak served in kitchen until supplies run out.

He eyed his somewhat-sloppy handwriting, deemed it legible, and headed back to the kitchen to get started on another steak.

Sound body, sound mind

Who: Dhaval and OPEN
When: Early afternoon
Where: The fitness center

Dhaval wheeled straight to the hand weights, bracing himself with his good hand and hopping onto the bench, supporting himself on his feet for a split second. He landed a little hard, but at least the bench was low enough that he didn't need to call Tayne or some other helpful soul to hoist him out of his chair. For weightlifting purposes, he could just stay in the chair, but even braked it was slightly wobbly and precarious, and he preferred not to.

He spared a moment to glare at his broken finger. He was basically down to one reliably functioning limb at this point, and feeling even more helpless than usual wasn't any more comfortable than the snapped bone. He almost felt silly for coming, but if he had to rely on his weaker left arm, he wanted it to be in the best possible shape. As soon as his finger stopped twinging so nastily, he could probably get himself into bed, at least. As it was, it had taken five minutes just to get his hair tied back, and he could hardly ask for help with that.

At least he didn't have to change up his routine much, just cut it in half. Upper body and core strength training had been a big part of his life since the accident, and he knew what to do without having to dwell on it much, letting his mind quietly wander back to the problematic story he was laboriously writing left-handed on a found legal pad.

[info]holy_ghost

Who: Andre and Landon
When: About 3ish in the afternoon
Where: The lobby

"These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore, they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them. Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

Andre closed the old leatherbound Bible and stroked his goatee. This was definitely the inspiration he had needed today. He'd allowed himself to sleep in for once, thankful to the Lord for the comfortable bed again and a place to rest. But the time for rest was over; now was the time for him to make preparations. Before the Tribulation began, he'd never been a huge student of the Book of Revelations. He'd seen it as an oddity in the Bible, and while all of God's words had merit, it wasn't one of the books he'd focused on very much. But now, here in the End Times, it was all making much more sense. These weren't words for the before-times, these words, written thousands of years before, were for him, for now. They were to be an inspiration for him, to give him strength in mankind's last darkest hours. Closing his eyes and bowing his head, his hands clasped, he spoke to the Lord, the one person he was sure he could count on in this day and age.

"Our sweet Lord, thank You so much for this wonderful sanctuary You have given us, this protection from the outside world. Now I ask You for strength, for guidance. Dear Lord, help me to be Your shepherd, to lead these lost souls out of the darkness and into Your kingdom. In Your most holy of names I pray. Amen." Raising his head and opening his eyes, he had a slight smile on his face. He knew his mission, he knew what the Lord had planned for him now. All would be right with the world.

Getting up with a grunt, he walked over to the window, peeking out as much as he could. His leg was throbbing again. It had been ever since he'd left the church and been on it for too long. But the pain was temporary, a test of his faith, and he would be found worthy of God's glory. In his deep voice, he began to sing one of his favorite songs, one his wife had often sang in church. "I sing because I'm happy... I sing because I'm free... For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me." A bit out-of-date now, seeing as there were no more sparrows, as far as he knew, but the meaning was there.

Cooking Lessons

Who: Tayne and Taylor
Where: The kitchen
When: 11:30 am, Day 10

After dealing with the eggs, getting in a shower, and chowing down on a little cereal from the stores, Tayne was ready to get to work. He didn't think the ovens in the great hotel kitchen were still working, so he brought his own little dutch oven in from the trailer and set it over a burner. Thank god for gas-powered stovetops. He could just sear the bird meat... but he'd have to actually bake the bread, so he needed an oven, even a primitive one.

With his giant bag of flour, the last of the milk and eggs, and the melted butter, he got to work on dough. It didn't take him long to get into the rhythm of cooking. It was soothing, and something of a relief to just lose one's self in something simple and familiar. It'd been a long time since he'd actually baked bread, but hopefully he hadn't forgotten anything.

Finally leaving the first load of bread to rise, he took a brief break for more cereal. He hadn't eaten much over the course of the past day or two, and now he was definitely hungry.

If we ever get TV back, I nominate you for a cooking show, okay? Iron Chef Apocalypse. )

Fire and Rain

Who: Josh and Minuette
When: 11:00 a.m., day 10
Where: the kitchen

It was a bit early for lunch, and that might've been why the kitchen was empty when Josh went into it. He was feeling strange again: hot, sweaty, twitchy, vaguely frustrated. He'd awakened fairly early this morning, finding that apparently he'd gotten out of bed during the night and curled up next to the open window in his room, his bare back against the wall, his damp hair plastered to his head. He could never get cool enough, was his problem. The only relief he'd found since he'd discovered he could set things on fire had been icy cold baths and showers, and they would only last so long. He thought that his body temperature was never what most would consider normal anymore, but he didn't have a thermometer with which to check it.

He'd taken a pair of scissors to his jeans, making them into cutoffs, and he'd left his shirt in his room, not thinking anything about the fact that he was wandering around without much clothing on. It was dark most places in the hotel, since they didn't have any lights except a few flashlights. Who'd notice or even care? He paced around the kitchen, trying to figure out if he wanted something to eat. He couldn't decide. His bare feet carried him around the huge stainless-steel island to one of the deep sinks in this part of the room, and he noticed that someone had filled it with water. Josh stopped and stared at it for what felt like a long time, then reached over to touch its surface. Cold, straight from the pipes. He removed his hand, thought some more, almost in a daze of anticipation in the stuffy silence of the room.

Josh hot. Mini rain. )
