Flashback - Day Two - "This is my Boomstick..."

Who: Loren & Tony
When: Day Two
Where: The Ruins of Detroit

Loren threw all of his weight downward against the pavement, the pain in his left arm unimportant as he thrashed and fought against the iron-like grip around his wrist. Teeth clenched and eyes wide, he hissed and fought, his tiny frame like the beating wings of a butterfly against the foot of a giant. The man holding his wrist was huge, massively deformed and though he still retained some of his human mind, he was definitely a far cry from being normal. Long tusks stretched out from under his hips, twisted and cracked as they headed back upward into the sky. The hulking figure continued to move, dragging what was his behind him as though there had been no need to ask for permission.

"You great prat!" Loren managed, his insult hampered by his hesitance to speak at all. He'd just witnessed possibly the most disgusting slaughter he could have ever witnessed, the group he'd been with until now smeared along the floor like they had been nothing more than insect guts. His throat and head were sore after the explosion of sound that had ripped out of him, and as he struggled he coughed, the simple phrase he'd let out bringing up blood with it. He could hardly think straight right now, could hardly see what was happening. Being dragged, twisting and fighting, shocked and half-crying, Loren was a mess - and at best, completely helpless.

The thing dragging him off grunted from the depths of his chest, turning to look down at the woman it thought it was dragging. It smelled like a woman, sounded like a woman, looked like a woman. There was no more confirmation needed. The creature was acting only on instinct, not willing to listen to reason. "Quiet," he said, and yanked the smaller man hard to continue dragging him.

Loren wished badly that he could trust his voice long enough to call for help, to scream... to do anything. As it was, he was stuck here, and it wasn't looking good.

Wing Experimentation

Who: Rowan and Verity
Where: That little house of theirs
When: Right around sundown

It had just gotten to be too much, being trapped inside that little house with two kids and two adults-- sort of adults. Adolescents. Whatever you called people their age. Rowan realized quickly that he'd go insane if he had to stay in there all day, so in between chores or meals or trying to entertain the kids, once the sign was done and put up in the front bay window, he'd started sneaking out into the backyard for a breath of fresh air and to stretch his legs.

On this last slip outside-- which he'd figured would be his last, since night was on its way-- stretching his legs in a walk around the thankfully fenced-in backyard turned into stretching his wings. And now, though the sun was sinking down and he was hearing some distant monster-animal-whatever sounds, he was still out there, beating them, running with them open, running with them beating, and otherwise just experimenting.

Because dammit, he was going to figure the damn things out and make them useful.

That results in falling down. )

Who: Amberlee, Paige, and Terry
When: Day 2, 7:45am
Where: Detroit streets in search of a drug store.

Amberlee took off at a pace from the bar eager to find a solution to her problem. She hadn’t paused in hope that the others would follow her. She didn’t care if they did. Her wits were frayed. She was swinging on the end of her rope. More than anything else she desired some relief from the mental noise whirring about her mind, and so far no one had listened or helped in any way.

She walked with her head down guarding images of the surrounding dead scattered about the pavements and, simmering in the cars. It wasn’t out of any sort of necessity to do so however. The fact was she wasn’t seeing much of what was around her anyway; so distracted by her own internalization. By the time Paige even caught up to her stern march she had broken into her two times table, her hushed breath working through them with a purpose. "Two times two is four, two times three is six, two times four is eight..." Despite the oddity, she found it helped a lot. "I'm not going back," She interrupted herself to speak defiantly at Paige. "I can’t just sit around anymore." Her voice was shaky unlike the day before, stress evident in the frailty of her voice.

Who: Penny and Zane (bwaaaaaaaaaaa hahaha).
When: Day 2, around 10:00ish PM.
Where: The hall...way...? And then who knows. TO INFINITY, AND BEYOND.

To be honest, Penny could have slept much later. Which was amazing, considering she rarely slept at all, and the grogginess she felt leaving her room due to oversleeping was so foreign to her she thought she was perhaps turning into one of the monsters screaming outside. But then, that had been what had woken her up in the first place; the commotion outside made it incredibly hard for Penny to even pretend she could remain comatose through it all. So she ambled slowly out of the hotel room with a pen and paper in hand, rubbing the back of her neck for a change in scenery. Her window opened up onto the alley, and she thought she remembered seeing the one in the hallway opening up to the street.

Sure enough, when she got there, she saw monsters and screamers all around. She wondered if there were any poor humans stuck in that din, but from what she could see there weren't any. Penny slowly slid down the wall and sat under the window, using it's light to illuminate the paper. She wanted to make a checklist for herself, and she wanted to keep an eye on the monsters. Mutlitasking, check.

Penny tugged on the hem of her overly large shirt, working at her lip. It was an old shirt of Tre's that she had stolen a long time ago, and she took when she left in the divorce. She had tried to call him again before she fell asleep, but once more she reached voicemail. It was time she admitted he was most likely gone, but Penny decided she'd call every day until her phone battery died. It was worth a shot, right? She smiled softly and cleared her throat, tugging her shirt down a bit. She probably should have thrown some shorts on or something before she left her room, but she was comfortable as she was. Besides, who else was going to be wandering around this late?

A Meeting and a Plan

Who: Rowan, Verity, and Liah
Where: The living room of their little hidey-hole
When: Midday, after lunch

After Liah had been dragged out of her bedroom, hamburgers had been made and shared around, and everyone had finished eating, Rowan stuck the kids in the kitchen again with the chore of washing and drying the dishes. Even Juniper knew how to wash dishes and not break them-- they all pitched in, at their house, after all-- and Jasper was old enough to figure it out, if he didn't know. And it kept them busy while the "grown ups" talked out in the living room.

Rowan didn't even bother sitting down. The only place he could was the couch, and he didn't want to take up the whole damn place. So he motioned for Verity and Liah to sit, instead, and said, "So. Liah. Me and Verity heard gunshots out there, when we were bringing in the bike. It was a ways off, but-- well, we figure it means there's definitely other people out there. Somewhere."

A new day has come...

Who: Paige, Amberlee, Alan, Juan and Joyce
When: August 23nd, 2015, Day Two, early morning, around 7:30 am
Where: The Underground (bar)

Joyce had set her iTouch to beep at seven, and though it did, she didn't stir, at first. Her body, too tall for her to be comfortable on one of the couches, was lying on the floor on its side, back to the wall, gym bag under her head for a pillow. It had been warm enough that she Hadn't bothered trying to find anything to cover herself the night before. She'd slept in her clothes, her small backpack strapped over her shoulders, across her chest, so she was hugging it. If they had to move suddenly during the night, she'd only have to grab her gym bag.

This was all she had left. Nothing as interesting as a violin or a guitar, but her life was currently in those two bags and her pockets. She thought about going home, but it would be a long walk and to what end? At the moment, daily survival was more important.

And making sure as many of them got to a safe place as possible.

They'd found some food the night before, albeit items raided from a few of the neighboring restaurants. The calorie count was high, but who cared? The food would have just gone bad, otherwise...

The beeping became more insistent. Joyce sighed and slowly opened her eyes - and confirmed what her nose and back were telling her: She was on the floor of a bar, and what had happened yesterday had been real. She reached into her knapsack and fiddled with the iTouch. Was anyone else awake?

Moving the Motorcycle

Who: Rowan and Verity, with Jasper and Juniper (NPCs)
Where: The house, and just outside it!
When: Late morning, 1030-ish

During the night, even once Rowan had made it back to his and Juniper's room sometime after midnight, Rowan hadn't really gotten much sleep. Between the ever-present ache that the advil had only taken the edge off of not taken away entirely, the awkwardness of trying to deal with the wings, and the jerking awake every time he heard one of those howls or animal screams close enough to the house to hear clearly, even the five hours or so after dawn that he did manage to sleep felt like just an eyeblink. He hadn't even noticed when Juniper left the bed sometime not long after dawn, because he'd just been so exhausted.

But now he was actually awake, and felt vaguely guilty for sleeping so late when who knew what was out there and there were other housemates to worry about. It was only after he'd used the bathroom to take care of a few necessary things and splashed some water on his face that he realized he hadn't heard a single monster-noise since he'd woken up. "Huh," he told himself, and then he headed out to see what'd happened to the rest of the house while he slept like a goddamned rock all morning.

And discovering we're not alone! )
