New Monsters

Who: Corey and Dhaval
Where: Dhaval's room
When: Midday-ish

The storm made it a lot harder to go out like he usually did, but Corey still did it. He came back much sooner than usual, though, and soaked to the skin despite having taken his usually effective coat to keep the rain off. He'd come back with a few more apples, and a few more bags of chips-- useless things, but maybe the kids would like them-- but not much else. Blitz smelled like a wet dog, despite being mostly a cat, and had been very unhappy about it, though she'd been quite happy to get dried off with one of his towels, playing with it like it were some kind of cat toy.

At least he knew what he was going to do with his enforced idleness. The day before he'd sensed three more monsters "waking up" in the hotel, and he could tell those weird eggs had hatched. Now that he had time, he was going to see what was going on with 'em.

The stronger sense brought him to a room on the first floor, where he rapped firmly on the door, though he couldn't imagine who was in there. It looked like it was nothing more than a storage room.

Oh, great, scary guy. )

Let There Be Light

Who: Andre and Corey
Where: The basement
When: Morning

And God said, let there be light. And there was light, and it was good. Andre thought back to the beginning of the Bible with a smile as he finished off a nice hot breakfast for a change. It was amazing the difference electricity made on your disposition. He didn't know who to thank for the hot meal, besides the Lord at least, but he wasn't going to complain. It had been far too long since he'd had a decent meal, and for a man his size, that was too long. He knew he could stand to lose some weight, but this had been bordering on the ridiculous.

Still, he had work to do, and he didn't want to put it off any longer. He'd heard something through the vents and wanted to investigate. The last thing he wanted was for something else to be rummaging around in the basement, or worse, that big nasty spider to have left a few babies someplace that the firebug hadn't been able to catch. His trusty shotgun in one hand and a flashlight in the other, he headed downstairs, silently wishing he'd had the human flamethrower with him, although he wasn't entirely sure the boy would've been up to it again so soon. He was still feeling a bit off from overuse of his own power and hoped he wouldn't have to go invisible again today. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death..." Andre mumbled as he started down the stairs.

Oh, shut up, cat. Don't think he's going to shoot us )

Electrician and Engineer

Who: Verity and Corey, plus Jasper (NPC)
Where: The lobby
When: Late morning

Verity had slept in a little bit, and now he was going to use the bright daylight in the lobby to get started on his security projects. Tayne was probably busy, and Verity didn't really want to go looking for him. And Terry was totally laid up. He didn't think anyone would object to his new plans, so he figured he and Jasper would just get rolling on his floodlights. Tomorrow or sometime soon he'd try and recruit people to clear the area around the hotel, see what other defenses could be thought up. For now, bright lights were good for scaring away undesirables. Might work on monsters as well as crazy people with guns.

And now that he had his power back, he wanted to use it. A lot. It felt as though all those little machine tweaks were pressing against the backs of his eyes. He'd found his scrounged tools and supplies undisturbed, and he and Jasper had pulled light bulbs and even a few high-powered flashlights out of janitors' closets. The makings of his deterrent surrounded him, and Jasper sat beside him, assisting ably, the brothers hemmed in by twists of wire and circuitry. They looked more alike than usual, both intent on their task, heads bent and eyes sharply focused. They didn't talk much. They didn't need to.

Verity was used to being able to condescend mentally. )

Intimidating the Locals

Who: Dhaval and Corey
Where: The lobby
When: Early-ish morning

Dhaval was onto the third book Tayne had brought him. He was trying to take it as slowly as he could, but he felt starved right now. Back in the world that was, he'd stopped by the library on the way home from work twice a week, and when he wasn't typing away on his computer, he was buried in some novel or other. The selection he had now was rather random, of course, a couple generic spy novels, a children's book (probably miss-shelved, and luckily an old favorite) with unicorns, something about dragons, something else about pirates, only in space, and an Agatha Christie. Most of them he wouldn't have picked out himself, but Dhaval required words the way most people needed food, and he had to fight not to devour what he had.

He'd wheeled himself out into the lobby to read in a bit of sunlight. He didn't want to ask anyone to take him outside, and though he mostly felt better physically, he was a little weak, low on energy. He needed more sun, something to keep him warm at night. Well, preferably someone... He was trying not to drive himself distracted with worry, but Tayne was all he had to focus on outside his attempts at writing and the books he had to ration. He looked half asleep where he sat, eyes flickering quickly back and forth on the page.

You knew?? )

Doing As You're Told

Who: Corey and John
Where: The front of the hotel
When: Late afternoon

There were too many signs. Corey couldn't ignore it even if he wanted to-- which he still kind of did. Even as he walked towards the hotel, with his over-loaded backpack, duffle-bag, shot-guns, and electrician's toolbox, he was seeing them. The angle of the sunlight pointing shadows towards the hotel, at this time of day. The lack of monsters in the streets or even in the houses he passed. The outflung arm of a skeleton, long since picked clean, hanging out of a car window. It annoyed him, but he couldn't ignore it, and he couldn't deny it.

So here he was, crossing that parking lot again, scowling darkly at the direction fate had dragged him, Blitz seeming just as unhappy as he was as she trailed along behind him. If this turned out to be wrong, or if things changed, his house was intact, boarded up and locked down and waiting for him, along with the rest of his supplies and belongings that he hadn't packed into the bags he brought with him.

Now he just needed someone to let him in. Standing in front of the closed door, he scowled further, and set down his duffel bag and toolbox to come and knock. Blitz disdained to follow quite that far, and sat down behind him a ways, two tails twitching and a couple of her tentacles clinging to his belongings.

This is where we're supposed to be. )

Right Out of a Comic Book

Who: Jasper and Juniper (NPCs) and Corey
Where: The streets, then Corey's house, then the hotel
When: Morning

Jasper had already half filled his pockets with odds and ends. Verity wasn't that hard to figure out, in theory. He went where he could find things to tinker with. Sure, he was looking for those people who'd gone missing, but Jasper couldn't think of any particular reason following what looked like interesting bits of metal wouldn't work. What else would those people be looking for? Food, maybe, but the world had plenty of grocery stores near hardware stores, and then you could do two errands at once. He shoved a bit of broken bicycle chain into his sweatshirt pocket and straightened, head up. He might miss a sign of Verity. Or he might miss a monster. In preparation for that, he had a railroad spike and a snapped off bit of railing shoved into his belt. He glanced back at Juniper just for a moment before he turned his attention back on finding Verity. And damn, was he in trouble.

For her part, Juniper was only here because she followed Jasper. She didn't have any idea where they were going, or why they were going this way, or what was in Jasper's head at all, really. She just knew she hadn't wanted to be left alone in two big, empty suites with Rowan and Liah gone, and then Jasper leaving. He walked faster than she did, and she'd wound up having to scramble over and around things just to keep up. Really, she was starting to get a bit frustrated with it all, and more than a little cranky, and they'd really only been outside about an hour. Even the comparative joy of being outside, for once, had palled under their lack of water or snacks or even a few moments to rest.

Then there were the monsters. She really didn't think much about them, being a naturally brave sort of child, but when she actually saw one slinking down the sidewalk towards them, she froze in terror, perched on top of a car and completely exposed.

Of the anti-hero type. )
