Who: Catie, Keith, and any others near the hotel
When: August 23, 2015, Day Two, early morning (~8:00)
Where: Aletheon Hotel and the streets around it.
After a long night of restless sleep and hearing the muffled screams of the monsters on the streets below them, Catie had finally given up rest. The others were either still sleeping or pretending to sleep, so she moved gingerly across the room to avoid making sound. It was a few hours after daybreak; she opened up the balcony of the room and stepped outside for some fresh air. The day's heat was already sweltering, and Catie decided that the moment she could get some alone time she would take a shower.
She was about to turn to go back into the room when she spotted a moving figure down the street. It was hard to tell exactly from this distance, but, well, it looked human! Cate crouched down behind the iron cast railing and waited to see if the figure would come closer. By god, if someone else survived..! There weren't any other figures moving, so maybe the monsters had moved on to different areas of the city. Just in case, she thought, I'll stay here for now.
The night had been uncomfortable--even moreso with all the sounds and cries of... whatever was out there. As night fell the day before, Keith took refuge in an abandoned building while he made his way through the city. He situated himself at the top of stairs, one of his guns within his reach if anything happened. He dozed off, coming in and out of consciousness, stirring at the slightest of noises and at the nagging thought of how hot it was. Keith didn't sleep much out of comfort so much as necessity, the walking and humidity draining his stamina.
As soon as daylight hit, he was out on the streets again--a gun in one hand, his (refilled) bottle of water in the other. He tried to keep his eyes off the corpses, he'd already seen his fair share yesterday.
God... the blood...
Yes, yes, he was definitely human. Catie stood from her crouch and went back into the hotel room, quiet to not disturb anyone, and went back into the hallway. With an excited smile coming to her face, she began to run down the stairs as quickly as she could without tripping. It wasn't long before she came to the lobby strewn with bodies, and Catie had to stifle her mouth to keep out the smell.
There was a problem, though. She had forgotten that the men had put furniture in front of the door, and it would take some time before she would be able to move them. With a frustrated grunt she tried to push the desk out of the way, but it was heavy and resisted her efforts. "Damnit!" Catie cursed, trying again to move it.
The heavy desk finally gave way, and she was able to move it just enough to open the door and slide through.
"Hey!" She shouted, as quietly as she could. "Over here!"
The sound of the voice snapped Keith out of the drowsiness that the heat was instilling in him as his sharp blue eyes glanced over to the source. On one level, it scared the crap out of him; he wasn't... well, expecting it. And on another, he wanted to run over and give the stranger a hug and never let go. Finally there was someone who wasn't bleeding or mauled and... dead.
Keith glanced off to the sides, not so much checking for traffic as he was for something else, before jogging over. "G'morning," he panted with an awkward little smile. He wasn't really sure if that was the proper greeting anymore, but he just went with the familiar.
She smiled at him, beckoning him inside. He was alive and a boy her age and cute. "C'mon," she said, "Its safe in here." Catie slipped back in the hotel, waiting for the boy to follow before she closed the door.
"Here, help me with the desk," she said, wanting to err on the side of caution. Who knew when those creatures would come back? Once they were finished, she turned to face the boy and smiled. "Hi." After everything she had been through, a pretty face could still reduce her to a blubbering idiot. Catie hoped the light was dim enough that he wouldn't see her blush.
Keith was glad to find sanctuary some place away from the danger, and possibly the heat of the outside which was making his mind feel foggy and giving him this odd 'I'm melting' mind set. He eagerly followed the girl's request, though a part of him was dreading the reason why they were blocking the door.
Smiling softly, Keith was completely oblivious to the girl's blush. He ran a hand through his hair that was damp with sweat and greeted again: "Hiya. Nice weather?" He joked, sheepishly.
"Yeah, right," she said with a grin. "If it rains it'll be nicer, get rid of some of this humidity." She stuck out her hand, trying to imagine a nicer scenery than the bloodied hall they were in. Since they didn't have anything better to do, she would find a way to make it more presentable in here, especially since they probably going to be staying here from now on.
"I'm Catie."
If it was going to rain, Keith wouldn't mind standing outside for a little while. The thought of laying on the concrete passed through his mind--but then so did the remains of what was the population of Detroit. Rrgh... what were they going to do with all of them just laying out there, frying? Their bodies deserved more respect than that...
"Um. Ah. Keith." He fumbled with his hands a little as he passed the gun to his other hand and took hers lightly. "It's nice to meet you." He nodded.
"Hi Keith. Everyone else is upstairs, I think they're still sleeping right now." She shuffled her feet, taking a moment to study the stranger. He had a gun, which was definitely good. "When was the last time you ate? We could go find the kitchen if you wanted. I think Terry said there weren't any of those creatures here, so it should be safe."
"Um..." Keith rubbed the back of his neck as he tried to remember... He finished the bag of chips that was in his backpack the night before, but that was pretty much all he ate between yesterday and today. "Last night," he said as he pulled his pack over to place the bottle of water inside, lightening the load on his hands a little.
"Ah... sure." Food did sound good, but he felt bad mooching off her within about five minutes of knowing meeting her... "I mean.. if it's no trouble," he added shyly.
"Oh, its no trouble at all." She put a hand on his forearm as she spoke, tilting her head sideways. "I'm sure there is plenty for everyone. C'mon." She turned and headed toward the front desk, trying to ignore the blood and gore still littering the place and keep an upbeat mood.
"We'll have to explore a little, I haven't been down to the kitchen yet myself."
Keith nodded, and followed after her silently for a few moments. Despite not wanting to look, he couldn't help it as his eyes skimmed over the hotel. It really was everywhere, wasn't it? But what was it? Was it that disease, or was it those... creatures she mentioned?
"...um..." He started hesitantly. "...you... mentioned creatures earlier?" Keith glanced off to the side, catching a brief glimpse of another body. "What creatures?"
Catie stopped for a moment, looking back at Keith. "You... didn't see any while you were out there?" She looked at him with something akin to pity, biting her lip. "Maybe... maybe that's better for you." She fell quiet, and found the door leading to the kitchen.
"Come on."
Keith furrowed his brow in a mix of confusion and worry and fear, tilting his head to the side slightly, wondering. The grip on his gun grew tighter at the thought, he... just didn't know what to think anymore.
"S-sorry," he mumbled, glancing down at the floor. "I didn't mean to bring up something I um... shouldn't have."
