He wasn't going to stay long. Cain kept assuring himself that he was just making a rest stop--a couple of days
at most. He desperately needed to get to Sioux Falls. '
That's what you always say.' the voice in his head chastised. '
But take your sweet time,' it continued in a mocking tone. '
After all, it's not like Odette is still there anyway. It's been five years, you jackass--just give it up already!' But he couldn't give up hope. It was all he had left in this miserable world.
Judging by the aggravated mood of the voice in his head, Cain knew he needed to find a fix. His stomach gave a painful churn that would have made him double over years ago, but he was used to it now. He adjusted the strap of his knapsack on his shoulder, preferring to think of the nagging soreness of his shoulders than his stomach. He was approaching what looked to be a small park area occupied by some people buying and selling wares and trades. Cain had a few things he was sure he could trade for something to settle his craving, even if just for a little while. He just had to find a seller.
