I finally have the final autopsy reports for the Squiggle siblings.[ MOODY ]
D. Squiggle was killed by a cannon charm aimed at [...] the inside of his mouth. E. Squiggle was killed by a slashing hex to the throat. Their bodies were arranged at the visitor's entrance to the Ministry in the early hours of 2 January. His body was left levitating around the remains of his head, hers was left splayed out atop the telephone booth. The message -- "You're going to miss the truce, Love Bellatrix & Rodolphus" -- was left in blood. Forensics have come back on that too -- the blood belonged to both of them.
Between the message, a hoot to the WWN, and comments made on the journal network, the Lestranges haven't been shy about taking credit for this one. We have eyes on their castle but there's been little activity there.

Selwyn targeted me at the Gala. She had photos and videos of my brother and his family on a tablet and claimed to have someone watching his house. I had no reason to doubt her. In exchange for their safety, I was to be one of the Muggleborn faces of the new Ministry. I was never under the Imperius, though. I was wearing a cursed necklace that would freeze me from the inside out if I told anyone about the blackmail, if I revealed Selwyn was a Death Eater, &c. Selwyn incriminating herself on live television was really a stroke of luck. I wasn't sure that would work.[ ZEE ]
I can tell you that Selwyn has a very distinctive emerald mask with a snake carving [📎DSmask.png]. She was present at Stand With Tinworth. She's partly responsible for the massacre at Charming Confectioneries, and the maiming of Grace Catchlove. She murdered Florence Abercrombie on Christmas, Josephine Denbright, my former partat the 2005 WizVis Gala, and she likely murdered Derwent Shimpling. She maimed him on Christmas and attacked him again at Stand With Tinworth. The dramatic tableau screams Diana Selwyn.
She may seem like the type to stay hands off, but she is a sick, disturbedbiwoman, and she needs to be taken down.

I have an update re: the Flint case. As previously reported, Flint was found in a stairwell with a surgically precise incision in her throat. Flint claims she was there to visit Healer Josephine Yaxley when Elizabeth Proudfoot attacked her. She claims Proudfoot is a vigilante -- more specifically, a member of the Order of the Phoenix -- and was trying to "finish what Henry [McKinnon] started by sabotaging her wards." An update on the DM above St Mungo's, now with a statement from the victim, Hr. Charity Burbage:Burbage was on the phone with her sister, Faith Burbage, when she said Voldthe Darkhis name. A Death Eater appeared on the scene less than a minute later.DE was robed, masked, and presented as male. He sounded and acted young. DE used a blasting curse to throw her into the wall, but there were no physical attacks beyond that. Instead, DE used Legillemency to make her relive past traumas. We're looking at someone who presumably specialises in mind magic. Burbage made a point of mentioning that he "seemed to get off on" torturing her. Burbage assumes she was left there as a warning for others, but there could be more to it. Her mother is a Tripe, and the Tripes are very notably purists. They're very well-connected (Reginald Avery's mother is a Tripe), and while the Death Eaters don't seem to have any reservations about killing blood traitors, it doesn't seem like the first step, either.

Regarding the Bertie Higgs case, this is what we can determine so far (and Auror Johnson, please feel free to add any facts that I might have missed):Higgs' story is that she returned home and noticed her demiguise was acting 'a little clingy'. Shortly afterwards, she saw a flash of orange from the window, and the fire started. No reports or evidence of a Dark Mark cast, but it was most certainly Fiendfyre that caused damage to the property. No evidence points to the fact that the Fiendfyre was at any point in time raging out of control. (Quite the opposite, in fact.) Suggests a highly experienced caster with a great degree of control over the spell rather than an amateur. Investigating the perimeter of the Higgs property turned up a number of footprints, shoe size approximately 11. Likely male, but no matches yet.
Initial suspect profile - size 11 shoes, likely male (possibly 6 foot or taller). Unlikely to be a Death Eater or supporter, but highly experienced in the casting of Fiendfyre (and therefore the dark arts in general).
We would probably need to look into anyone who might have had any grudges against Higgs, who fits any of the suspect parameters referred to abovenot counting any of the morons currently in charge in this Ministry. In my opinion, this appears to be no accidental fire, but a deliberate targeting of Higgs.

Gawain Robards came to me a couple days ago about the Donovan murder in Belfast -- he recognised the button forensics found at the scene from his twelve rounds with Dolohov in Interrogation Room E. It was confirmed today as a [...] "Marcus by Marcus" original. As for motive -- Donovan was a film nerd from Northern Ireland, much like Benjy Fenwick, killed the day after her father was sentenced to the Kiss.
What's more troubling is that Auror Williamson is assigned to this case and I've heard nothing about any of this from him. Considering their close relationship, I believe we have grounds to investigate him. Robards has been keeping an eye on him for me -- I think he should take point on this.

An update re: the Lestrange situation — continue to work all high priority cases, but expect to spend six hours watching Lestrange Castle at some point in the immediate future. Nico is compiling a list of ward specialists, but this is easily one of the most fortified structures I’ve ever seen. A few things to note:[ AUROR SAVAGE ]We have access to the grounds and moat, but can’t get past the gate. The Lestranges have privacy wards in place so we can’t see much. There’s been no activity beyond […] the otters. I checked with the Floo Network Authority last night — the castle went abruptly went off the network last night, so that isn’t an option. Their house elves can get in and out of the place due to whatever fucked up magic house elves have, so their food supply will last a while unless we figure out a way to cut it off. Do not aim to kill if you see any movement — it could be the nanny or Lestrange’s son, and that’s the last thing we need right now.

At this stage in the war, I think it’s safe to assume that broken or triggered wards on the homes of DMLE employees are likely related to Death Eater activity. As such, the Department Heads have decided to update the policy to the following: to err on the side of caution, triggered/broken wards on DMLE residences will result in a response from a Hitwizard and an Auror. This is to bolster Hitwizard safety by giving any responder a partner who is specifically trained in combating Dark magic.[ AURORS ]

As the department heads move forward on coming up with a full proposal re: Unforgivables, I would like to update you on where we stand so far. It's important to me — to all of us — to have complete transparency on this issue. As of now, nothing has been decided, although it is becoming increasingly likely a concrete decision will be made at some point in the weeks ahead. And, as Rufus said last week, no matter what the outcome of this decision, no Auror will ever be required to use an Unforgivable.
With that in mind:Now that you have more information, consider this post an informal poll. It's fine if you're undecided, but I would like to know which way you're leaning. If you have additional questions or concerns, you're welcome to address them here or contact Crouch, Rosier, Rufus, or myself in private.There will be a field experience requirement. Exact years TBD. There will be skills & mental health assessments. Usage of Unforgivables in the field should be a last resort, and will be subject to review. As of now, we're leaning against the Cruciatus for what I hope should be obvious reasons.
