Unlike most Camelot press conferences, this one is different. For one, it's smaller. Only essential personnel and a handful of reporters are allowed in the room. Those reporters who have been with Camelot the longest, and have the proper security clearance. Instead of Zach on the podium, it's Freddie Morgan, his younger brother on the Morgan side. They're in a different room for the usual conference room, as well. The one Zach had been in is still roped off.
It's noon in London on Friday, February 6th, 2015. The room is dead silent, until Freddie finally clears his throat and begins to speak, his face solemn and posture somewhat stiff.
"Thank you for coming. Please take your seats now so we can get started.
Yesterday, my brother... Zachary Evans, head of Camelot's department of Public Relations... was shot during a routine press conference. He was shot by a woman posing as a reporter, her actual identity or any affiliations still unknown at this time. My name is Freddie Morgan. Some of you may have met me before. I've been working under Zach in the department, so I will be temporarily filling his shoes. You may be seeing a lot more of me for the foreseeable future.
I'll take some questions, now."
Hands are raised, and Freddie points to one of four reporters that had actually been allowed into the room.
Reporter: Any news yet on your brother's condition? Will he make it?
"Zach is in critical condition. As we speak, he is still in surgery. We won't know anything else until we have word from his doctors. He's not out of the woods just yet. But he will be."
He is unable to stay neutral on the topic of Zach's condition, he refuses to verbally or mentally acknowledge that Zach has another option besides pulling through. He points to a woman sitting on the far right.
Reporter: Any idea who's responsible? Is this another Resistance blamed assassination attempt? That seems to be a pattern with your family.
Freddie's jaw visibly tightens. "There's no way to know that at this juncture. All I know is that someone tried to kill my brother, and failed. He's still alive, and once he's on the mend, we will explore all possibilities. As of this moment, that's for the authorities to handle. Right now, my family is more concerned with Zach's well being. There will be an opportunity to enter into an investigation on our end at a later time."
He relaxes a little and points to another reporter.
Reporter: Mr. Morgan, are we to understand that you will be taking over your brother's duties while he's... unable to perform? What exactly are your qualifications?
"My qualifications? My qualifications are very simple. I'm a member of this family. My father was Matthew Morgan, former leader of Camelot. My older brother was Michael Morgan, also former. My older brother Daniel is current leader of Camelot, and I've grown up inside this organization. More than that, I've been working closely with Zach in the PR department for the last year, and he's taught me everything he knows." Freddie pauses to take a breath, willing himself to remain calm in the face of scrutiny. "I will be filling in for Zach while he's in recovery. I assure you, I'm more than qualified for this, but I suppose I'll let you all decide that for yourselves. We'll be spending a lot of time together in the near future."
Reporter: Do you have any comments on what your brother had been talking about in the last few press conferences? Camelot's stance on the Resistance, your strained relationship with the U.S. Government? Has any of that changed now?
"I'm not prepared to discuss those things today, though I assure you, we'll talk more about them later. There will be many more conversations regarding the Resistance and unfair government treatment of reincarnates, but I'm not here to talk about that today. My family and Camelot have been locked in a feud with the Resistance, and those terrorist organizations like them, for years. Whether the attempt on my brother's life was by a member of the Resistance or not, our official stance on them hasn't changed. We still intend to fight back against Resistance cruelty, and we will. Just like we will fight for the rights of reincarnates everywhere, who have the right not to be detained in a prison simply for being who they are."
He points to the last reporter. "Yes, and I'm sorry, but this will have to be the last question for today."
Reporter: What about Daniel Morgan? Why isn't the leader of Camelot here to make a statement, after such a public display of violence aimed at a member of Camelot's ruling family?
Freddie's face is a practiced mask, even if all he really wants to do is tell all these reporters off. "My brother Daniel is at the hospital right now, waiting on news about Zach with the rest of our family. I'm sure he wishes he could be here, but he's needed elsewhere. And since I will be filling in for the head of the PR department, there is little need for the leader of Camelot to take time out of his day for a press conference. Especially in light of the fact that someone out there seems to think it's acceptable to bring a gun into a press room. I'm sure you all understand the obvious security risks there.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to the hospital. Thank you all for your time."
The press conference ends with all four reporters standing up and talking at once, trying to get in some last minute questions. Freddie ignores them and leaves the stage, flanked on all sides by Camelot security personnel.
