Oh ack.
If you had automatic payments on LJ, and turned them off in the wake of Strikethrough, you might want to go over and check to make sure they're still turned off. Apparently people are complaining that the auto-payments on their accounts have been mysteriously turned back on without their consent.
They can't even go 24 hours without a new screwup, it seems.

Turned off now, and I guess I'll have to remember to check in a few months, hehe.

It could.
And if that is the case, it is really, really bad. Signing up for autopay should be something that people do deliberately, not by accident. So instead of fixing things that don't need fixing, why not give their users a non-confusing payment page?

all I see is what I have purchased and when it expires but no indictation of whether automatic payments are on or off?

Ask them to file a request with our Account Payments team (at http://www.livejournal.com/support/subm
If you're in this situation make it very clear that you have not made manual payments and it's still been somehow turned on, so we can see how they respond to it.

I was nosy and went to the payments page, and it seems that now you cannot choose whether or not you want automatic billing at time of payment--all choice have the automatic billing, and it does not matter how long of a timeframe you're buying the paid account for.

I have *never* used automatic payments on my LJ account. I just checked, and sure enough they'd been turned on.

As of this morning, they were back on again.
When I e-mailed LJ support, I got back a response that said LJ couldn't possibly have turned on my auto-payments because they don't have the account info, and that I must have done it myself.
My account expires in October. Thank god.

My remaining open question is: how do I wipe my Visa data from LJ's records so they can't turn autopayments on again?

It seems like 6A should be more concerned about themselves breaking laws rather than their customers. You know, since they did break that law about Terms of Service and now they could be technically taking payment without permission.
Someone really should drag them court, if only just to scare them.

Seriously though, that's fucked up hardcore.
