Oh ack.

If you had automatic payments on LJ, and turned them off in the wake of Strikethrough, you might want to go over and check to make sure they're still turned off. Apparently people are complaining that the auto-payments on their accounts have been mysteriously turned back on without their consent.

They can't even go 24 hours without a new screwup, it seems.

Chargebacks. If you turned auto-payments off, and they got turned back on, chargebacks.
Appreciate the heads-up. Now I know I should check them every once in a while until mine expires.
Oh, good reminder. I didn't plan on renewing my account, and had forgotten I have automatic payments (my account doesn't expire until June, anyway...)

Turned off now, and I guess I'll have to remember to check in a few months, hehe.
Wow. I'm sure I turned off my autopayments and just when I went to check they were on. Thank goodness for people with sharper eyes than mine!
Holy shit, my autopayments got turned back on, too. Fuckers.
It could well be that the page where people pay for their accounts is confusing/misleading people so that they don't notice that they are enrolling in the autopay system, and therefore didn't know about it until checking now.

It could.

And if that is the case, it is really, really bad. Signing up for autopay should be something that people do deliberately, not by accident. So instead of fixing things that don't need fixing, why not give their users a non-confusing payment page?
I, for one, had auto-pay set up deliberately, and then just as deliberately turned it off. And as of right now, it was back on. I've turned it off again, received confirmation it's turned off again. It had best stay that way. I've printed the confirmation email just in case this time.
feeling a bit daft here, but when I go to the manage accounts area: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/payments/index.bml

all I see is what I have purchased and when it expires but no indictation of whether automatic payments are on or off?
Then you should be fine. When I went to that page, it said when my last payment was made and also when my next automatic payment was scheduled.
thanks
ok, now im not so confused XD
I asked burr86 about the people who turned off autopayments and HAVE NOT made manual payments since then - as he is saying that they are accidentally turning autopayments on instead of making single manual payments.

He says,

Ask them to file a request with our Account Payments team (at http://www.livejournal.com/support/submit.bml?cat=accounts). I can't really give you an answer in general, because there is a different reason for everyone, and the Accounts team can help those people figure out what happened.

If you're in this situation make it very clear that you have not made manual payments and it's still been somehow turned on, so we can see how they respond to it.
I know that in the past that the autopay was only an option for getting an account for one year, and that you had to actually click on the option that allowed the autopay. (And when I say past, I mean within the last five or six months--I had been on the payments page to get paid accounts for a couple of friends before 6A starting screwing everything up).

I was nosy and went to the payments page, and it seems that now you cannot choose whether or not you want automatic billing at time of payment--all choice have the automatic billing, and it does not matter how long of a timeframe you're buying the paid account for.
Correction--there is a page that still allows one to get a paid account without the autopay feature, but it's kinda hidden. I found the page when I clicked on the "buy paid time for a friend" page...that page had a link to the page where one can buy a paid account without enabling autopay.
A commenter to my LJ post about this said she's never even used automatic payments, but they had been turned on for her!
Oh hell no.

I have *never* used automatic payments on my LJ account. I just checked, and sure enough they'd been turned on.

(sorry for your inbox ardath, just making sure people see this)

Thank you so much for the heads up. I IM'ed my friend about it, and sure enough, Livejournal had turned her automatic payments back on. Bastards.
This is the second time they've done it to me. They started auto-payments without my permission in April. I turned them off.

As of this morning, they were back on again.

When I e-mailed LJ support, I got back a response that said LJ couldn't possibly have turned on my auto-payments because they don't have the account info, and that I must have done it myself.

My account expires in October. Thank god.
Could've sworn I turned them off, just checked, and sure enough, they were on. And my account was supposed to expire last week, and didn't, so yeah, the bastards charged me for another year. Time to spend this weekend shifting more of my content away from their thrice-damned servers...

My remaining open question is: how do I wipe my Visa data from LJ's records so they can't turn autopayments on again?

(Anonymous)

I'm not sure there's a reliable way to do that (they claim they don't keep that info). If you're planning on leaving entirely, you could either delete your account or tell your bank to block charges from 6A. But LJ is legally bound to give you a refund for unauthorized charges--even my old internet company (with worse customer service than 6A, scarily) eventually gave me a refund when they "duplicated" my canceled account. Check your credit card bill regularly.

Rachel promises that she'll look into it. Well, I know I'm reassured! Not at all.
yeah ive noticed taht rachel tends to make promises of "looking into it" very often, but rarely ever comes up with any useful info to reply back with later XD
Yeah, I'm not exactly holding my breath here. I kind of like living. My suspicion is that it's all to make us quiet for a little while. What they'll do when that time's up, is a mystery.

thanks for alerting us! im gonna go do that right now. espcially since my paid time runs up in just a few days O_O
The stupid just continues, doesn't it? *Huggles e-card* I'm glad that all my credit card numbers that I use on the 'net expires a month after I use them. That and that my account recently reverted back to basic.

It seems like 6A should be more concerned about themselves breaking laws rather than their customers. You know, since they did break that law about Terms of Service and now they could be technically taking payment without permission.

Someone really should drag them court, if only just to scare them.
Well damn. I think I got lucky. o_o They didn't do that to my account, I wonder why. And I don't need to double check because its reverted to basic. 9_9

Seriously though, that's fucked up hardcore.
