Week One: Friday

Who: Kiernan and Alana
Where: Terrene Common room
When: Friday Night

The house was quiet, only the sound of a popping fire in the rooms fireplace. That and the soft sound of the little girl breathing while she slept on his chest. Kiernan's own breathing had slowed, not needed as it was for his daughter. He just wanted to listen to the soft sound of the intake and exhale of her breath. The quiet sound of her sleeping, her small hands still curled around his shirtfront. Not the thumb though, that was firmly planted in her mouth. The sound of her sucking on it though had stopped the minute her breathing had slowed and her body had slackened with sleep.

It wasn't that late, late enough for many of the students to be out in the city enjoying whatever the hell was going on down at that club that Kiernan couldn't stand. But he was glad for the silence and privacy now. Had been... a long afternoon. One of those afternoons that Kiernan hadn't been expecting but it was needed and he couldn't deny that fact either.

Alana stirred slightly where she slept. Her hand tightening in sleep for a moment before relaxing again as she pressed her cheek tighter to his chest, thumb still in place.

Everyone had been right. She was young and far more accepting of things than Kiernan had given her credit for. The talk that had been a long time coming had finally happened. Why? Kiernan couldn't quite explain what prompted it to happen but happen it had. Alana had seemed to already know that daddy was different than he used to be. That he was at this school because people were special here.... like daddy was now. He tried his best to explain that he wouldn't ever hurt her even though he was different...

Even though he was like the people now that had come to their house and scared her and taken mommy...

That had been the hardest part. It never got any easier to talk about the night Vivian had died, certainly wasn't a simple thing to do when it involved Alana's face awash with tears when she asked about mommy again. That was why he hated Janos. No amount of caring for his daughter now would make up for the fact that he was a part of the group that had brought that pain to her life. It just wasn't something you could make up for, at least in Kiernan's typically black and white world you couldn't.

It had been late when Alana finally had yawned and asked for him to tell her a story about mommy again. He'd been telling her about the time they'd gone to a movie, their first date and Vivian had been exhausted from an all night study session the night before. She'd fallen asleep during the movie, right on Kiernan's shoulder. But it had been the woman behind them that had taken offense to Vivian's snoring... not Kiernan. He hadn't minded one bit. It was a story he'd told before, but instead of Alana staying awake until the ending, complete with Vivian throwing waking up, being embarrassed and then angry at the woman behind her complete with popcorn throwing, Alana was asleep long before the end. Eyes still red rimmed but no longer tear filled. Instead just small dark lashes were pressed to her cheeks.

It never ceased to amaze him how much trust she had in him. He hadn't been much older than her when he'd learned how little to trust people, even those you were supposed to. All Kiernan knew was that he never wanted to break that in Alana. He'd put his life to that.
