Wufei clutched his duffle bag closer to his body. He didn’t even know if the person on the other side of the door would forgive him for their relationship’s ugly end.

He knocked on the door. Hearing nothing, Wufei sighed and turned to leave, running into the person he was seeking. “Duo…”

“So you came back, huh?” Duo walked past Wufei, unlocked the door and entered the apartment they had shared.

Wufei followed him inside. “Duo…I need a place to stay.”

Duo looked back with violet eyes that never change. “I told you. The door will always open for you.”

Duo stood at the window, staring up at the starry sky.

“What are you doing up?” a quiet voice asked.

“Don’t want to sleep, Wu-bear.” Duo answered without turning to his lover.

Ignoring the irritating pet name, Wufei walked to the window. “Nightmares again?”

Violet eyes slid shut as they tried to ignore the painful thoughts in the back of his head. “I can see them so clearly when I sleep. Father Maxwell, Sister Helen, Solo, everyone who died that I could have saved.”

A touch on the shoulder brought him out of his thoughts. “I’ll stay up with you.”

Duo stared at his reflection in the mirror. Only, it wasn’t his reflection he saw. Chestnut hair released from its confines in his usual braid appeared so much darker, the tips dyed golden. A glance at is eyes made them seem hazel rather than violet. I wonder if this is what Solo would look like if he was older...

“Duo, what’s wrong.” His Chinese lover interrupted his musings.

He ran a hand through his loose hair. “I was…thinking. I wonder what Solo would look like if he had survived.”

“We can’t change the past. We must live for the future.”

Duo shut his computer screen as Wufei walked into the room. That was suspicious. “What did you do?”

“I’m sure I don’t know what you mean.” He was fiddling with the end of his braid.

“Liar.” Wufei stalked over to the table where Duo was sitting. “You only play with your braid like that when you’re not telling the whole truth.” Ignoring Duo’s protests about not being a liar, Wufei snatched the laptop out of the braided boy’s hands.

After opening the screen Wufei glared at the fidgeting boy. “How long have you been writing this homo story about us?”

This was it. He was dying. “Wu-man at least gets the luxury of dying in his sleep.” he muttered, glaring at the other boy. Wufei was keeping still to stay alive longer. Duo could do no such thing.

“Why don’t you calm down? You’ll live longer.”

Duo glanced at the previously empty cell corner, staring into a familiar face. “Solo?”

The figure nodded. Confused, Duo walked towards him. He reached out to touch the boy’s face and passed right through. Understanding flooded his features.

“If this kills you, I’ll make sure your afterlife won’t be pleasant.” Duo could only nod.

Duo all but snatched the braid away, cradling it against his body. “Personal reasons.” he muttered.

“You still can’t let go of the past?” A hand reached towards the braid again, trailing along the entwined strands towards the band at the end.

“I could never forget them. Solo, Father Maxwell, Sister Helen.” The braid was clutched even closer.

Wufei’s hand lingered over the band holding the braid together. “Do you trust in a future with me?”

“Yes.” Duo breathed.

The band snapped.
