I am sure you've all heard by now about the recent stepping down of your Ancient Runes Professor and so I was just hired to fill that spot. I’m Theo Emerson, and if you know Bailey, she’s my baby cousin. You can call me Professor Emerson, Professor Theo, or just Theo. It all works for me!

I have a great deal of knowledge and experience in the area, as I have spent the past seven years in Egypt working as a curse breaker. Long story short, I will be finishing out the year with you all. Thankfully I have detailed notes on everything you’ve covered so far, so I should be able to avoid repeating anything you already know.

It is not my way in general to organize anything, however given the clear mood among many of your classmates, it seemed prudent. These are difficult and dangerous times. Our family members who have taken up positions in the Ministry are now targets for the fears of the many. Please consider my suite a safe haven should you need one, and look out for one another. No matter our families' involvement or not, and our own obvious lack of involvement, we are clearly marked.

I would like to offer my condolences to anyone who lost a loved one in this attack. As someone who has lost ones they cared about in the line of duty, I know that it's a pain that can't quite be described. My heart goes out to each and every one of you and I wish those who were injured a speedy recovery. As always, I am here for you if you need any help whatsoever. Hello Staff and Students,

As all of you have notice we are unable to do magic. Please don't worry as this was a mere accident and not an attack. We have our best working on the issue and we are hoping everything will return to normal soon. So please stay calm and think of this as a teaching moment: what would you do if you are unable to do magic anymore?

One last thing. There is a new rule being put into place. Muggle technology or experimenting with it are forbidden on school grounds.

Unlike many, I did not immediately notice the problems in the castle, but then, I spent much of yesterday translating ancient Greek when I was not assisting in class. It seems potions that were brewed prior to yesterday still work. Still, I am glad to have some knowledge of herbology and uses of plants beyond their magical properties. However yarrow and golden rod are not nearly as effective as a coagulation spell.

I am far less confident without magic than I would publicize. I had a bloody nose this morning that would normally not be a big deal in the grand scheme of my condition but required stuffing my entire nostril for some minutes before the bleeding slowed, and I still taste blood in the back of my mouth an hour later.

If a snake comes to you, follow him. He is mine and should something happen to me in this dampened magical field, I will tell him, and he will lead you to me.

Back during my school days we had to pass notes the old fashioned way- uphill both ways in the snow.  Good to give the owls a bit of a rest, isn't it. 

I probably should have introduced myself before my first round of classes, but my office was a bit of a mess and needed sorting out.  So I apologize for that oversight.  My name is Quincy Boothroyd, and I'll be your new History of Magic professor.  I'm aware it's not the most exciting subject for many of you, but do get plenty of rest the night before because I do not tolerate napping.

The BMA presence monitoring my family estate was obvious, but despite this I had a nice visit with my parents. Still it is strange to feel as though there are less eyes on me at Hogwarts, with all of the students, staff, ghosts, elves and the like than there was at home with just my mother and father.

I would like to remind everyone to remain calm with the recent news of the break out, if more fighting does to Hogwarts rest assured the staff is working to prevent another incident like the one some months ago.

I also expect you to be mature young adults(a stretch for some, I am aware) and not treat anyone differently for any connections they have to any of the escapees. They are still your peers, the same people who have been living with and attending classes with for years.

I will be involved if I find out any such treatment is occurring.

So, did not one of you think of the possible consequences of at least half a dozen fools spiking the various drinks at the party? Did it somehow escape you that people could have gotten sick? We have a hemophiliac on staff and the last thing he needs is blood thinning. Not to mention that anyone recovering from addiction would've been royally fucked by your stupidity.

But carry on your normal lives. Just pray I don't find out names other than the two I have or you'll regret it until you graduate.

A jailbreak, wonderful. It's good to know the most 'powerful prison' in the world for Wizards and Witches is susceptible to such failures. I truly do hope that someone is held responsible for this absurd gaff and is rightly punished for, now, putting the entire Wizarding world in danger. It's a bit absurd to think that this can be allowed to happen.

People will say I'm unfair, or 'mistakes happen', or that obviously the criminals perpetuating this breakout were well-prepared and the prison didn't see it coming. That criticism is fine if it's a Quidditch loss, or someone forgets to order a pallet of sugar at the local market; it's not fine when the mistake allows notorious criminals and killers loose upon the world. The prison should be prepared for any scenario, and it's obvious we need new leadership there.

I do not dislike this holiday, but the necessity to prepare a costume has taken time away from my research, as has trying to puzzle out the intention in some instances of poorly worded homeworks.

My snake has been sticking closer to me as well, he does not trust this holiday and the tricking. Ironic for a symbol of trickery, but he is more prone to pithy comments than he is other 'snake-tongued' words. Still, it is good that he is appropriate as a part of my costume this weekend, even if he is not poisonous, as I doubt he will let me go without him. If I did, I would hear nothing but complaints from him for some days, and I would get even less research done.

He was amused though last night to have startled the young first year in the Great Hall at dinner. I was speaking to a student beside her, and she had had not at first noticed him... but she let out a shriek when he moved to encircle my neck and sit on my shoulder. Clearly a muggleborn, or one not otherwise used to snakes as Familiars. Perhaps I should not have been so amused, but he was chortling at the incident, which made it funnier since of course no one else could understand his laughter.
