Glory was due at the house any minute and Gio couldn't decide whether to watch Blue Planet in his room or on the living room TV. As long as he kept his door open he didn't think his mom would have a problem with Glory in his room, but it was her first time coming over and he had all his fish tanks and marine magazines and geeky science posters and –
Well, it was something she would get used to as his friend, but Gio couldn't help but feel a bit shy about it. His room definitely didn't belong to a guy anyone would dub as cool, and it wasn't that he really wanted to be a cool kid in high school terms, but he couldn't help the feelings of inadequacy. For what was probably the twentieth time that day, Gio reminded himself he and Glory had first bonded over dissection and then a book on cadavers in science, so he really shouldn't have been self-conscious. And, according to Rory, he was sweet and wonderful; that had to count for something, too.
Just when Gio had decided to watch the show in his room, the doorbell rang. It sent his heart right into his throat, and he ran past the hall mirror on his way to the door, stopped and went back to the mirror, pulled his beanie down more, and then dashed toward the door again. His sock feet made him slip a little as he neared the door, but thankfully he didn't bang into it or anything.
Gio opened the door. He smiled.
"Hey." His voice sounded too breathless for his liking. "Looks like you made it here in one piece."
