Migrants to IJ, 2007

A little while ago someone mentioned in a comment on LJ (can't remember who or where it was) that one of the disadvantages of using OpenID was that you don't get comment notifications.

I'm not sure if anyone here had the same idea, but it's wrong. All you have to do is go to your "edit profile" page (after logging into LJ with OpenID), scroll down to "Contact Info", and put in the e-mail that you want notifications sent to. You'll get an e-mail shortly after asking you to verify it, and then it'll work just as if you had an account there... except you don't.

I've been using my OpenID account for a while to read my friends' journals on LJ, and it's been working pretty well for me. In fact yesterday I finally decided to delete my LJ and so far I don't feel like reactivating it.

So if you know anyone who's still waffling between making a permanent move here because all their friends are still at LJ, then you should tell them about this... OpenID is like methadone. :)

My friend helped me translate this into Russian. It is basically how to set up an IJ and how to use LJ-Sec to transfer posts. Please redistribute.

Многие англо-говорящие пользователи знают что большинству русских ненравится SUP. Нам очень хочется открыть линии связи, но так как многиене могут читать кириллицу, это трудно. Хотя я не русская, я верю чтоесли за свободами не следить, они исчезнут. Следуя этому, я перенесламой частный блог на InsaneJournal и DeadJournal. InsaneJournal гораздолегче в доступе чем DeadJournal, и я расскажу Вам именно об этом.

Squeaky, который имеет владельские права над InsaneJournal,очень гостеприимен. На протяжение нескольких месяцев, он открыл рукитем которым пришлось уйти от LJ по разным причинам: fandom, дискомфорт,и т.д.. Я спрашивала его насчет чего передать русскоговорящим людям синтересом в перexоде на InsaneJournal. Он мне сказал и я Вам передаю:

"Я только хочу чтобы они знали что мы им всегда рады и будемрады их иметь. Нам хочется увеличить количество пользователей. Знайтечто в будущем, мы собираемся оставатся независимым вебсайтом."

Еслисудить по тому, что вижу я как пользовательница, IJ сейчас - это то чтокогда-то был LiveJournal, когда они еще думали о своих пользователях впервую очередь.

With the recent influx of new users, I thought I'd post some sort of "Beginner's Guide" for InsaneJournal. The entry is divided into five parts: 1. a "prequel" on leaving LJ, 2. link roundups, 3. things to keep in mind before creating a new asylum or feed, 4. places to find asylums or users, and 5. known site issues. You can read it here.

I seem to still have some time before I'm dragged out to go ice-skating, so. These are the bugs that are coming through Support most often, and are being worked on. squeaky is going to have a major update of the code pretty soon, and apparently it will fix the disappearing comments, among other things.

1. Disappearing comments on posts. *points up* Being fixed.

2. The "half logged-in" bug on the update page, where you can't choose the "post to:" journal or an icon. I've asked about this on Squeaky's post and I'll edit in later what he says, but it's a bad enough one that presumably it's pretty high on the list of things to fix. - This is a Firefox error. See comments for snakeling's note on how to fix it.

3. The notification centre. Completely borked. I asked about this too, but I'm not sure of the status of it yet. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon, a lot of people have been asking about it. Will be in this coming update.

4. Error codes when accessing pages, I'm pretty sure most of that has already been fixed, but if you come across more obviously tell Support. I think there was something about 404 errors clicking links as well, and I had an idea that this was something to do with the Clean site layout.

The next site update will also allow for embedding videos in posts, for those of you who like those. :)

I've done it. I've joined IJ as a free user for now because of how tired I am of LJ. This is coming after Anildash popped up again InnocenceJ again to refute the idea of big old corporate scheming using Occam's Razor. By this explanation then, their reasoning is that the one doing all the deciding in this is an idiot rather than out to make money.

I'm not gonna comment on that except what I said in the thread, and that I should thank him for pushing me to join IJ finally instead of just lurking. Now . . . where's the anime comms? And how do I get the handy toolbar, or do I gotta pay for it? ::rubs hands::

How to set how much of your LJ posts are visible via RSS:

There's an admin console command, set synlevel < level >, which allows you to choose how much of your journal posts are syndicated via RSS feeds. The < level > can be "full", for the entire entry, "summary" for the first paragraph, or "title" for only the entry subject.

So if you have friends using RSS NewsReaders and you'd like them to be able to read your entire post (especially if they're using FeedReader and can see flocked posts) then: set synlevel full

I've seen a lot of people saying that the siteschemes on InsaneJournal are eye-searing, so I made a tutorial on how to prettify them.

Unfortunately, this tutorial is only valid for people using Firefox, Opera or Epiphany. I *think* there's a way to make it work on Safari, so if someone could test it and write a tutorial, I could add/link to it from my post. I'm afraid IE users are stuck, though.

Feel free to pimp the tutorial far and wide, and to create new styles on UserStyles.org.

There you'll also find a number of intriguing viewing schemes -- I picked Insanime, and it cracks me up in the best way! Don't know if I'll keep it (things are a little scrunched on the page), but for now, it amuses me no end.  ^___^

It's the little things that really make a house a home, and I have to admit, I was missing the navigation strip pretty badly. I think it was probably the only thing LJ had gotten right in a very long time...
