Breaking Down

I've done it. I've joined IJ as a free user for now because of how tired I am of LJ. This is coming after Anildash popped up again InnocenceJ again to refute the idea of big old corporate scheming using Occam's Razor. By this explanation then, their reasoning is that the one doing all the deciding in this is an idiot rather than out to make money.

I'm not gonna comment on that except what I said in the thread, and that I should thank him for pushing me to join IJ finally instead of just lurking. Now . . . where's the anime comms? And how do I get the handy toolbar, or do I gotta pay for it? ::rubs hands::

Comments

I'm not sure about anime communities. As far as the toolbar, you may need to be a paid member to get that, I'm not positive. But, if you can buy paid time, it would really help give back to the site. Administration here is friendly, approachable and on the ball if there's an issue. So, if you can afford $10 for six months of paid time, it'd help, especially since they just bought a larger server to accommodate those of us fleeing LJ.

And I hope I'm not coming across as preachy, it's not my intention. I'm only half awake.

Oh, and Anildash? I can't stand that guy. He puts his foot in his mouth over and over and while he may apologize for it after he gets slammed, the point is he shouldn't be a flaming asshat to begin with.

Anyway, welcome to IJ!!!
Man, I can't even say anildash's name out loud without thinking of a Mrs. Dash enema.

Which might be more pleasant than trying to get a straight answer out of anyone at LJ which won't be contradicted by a later statement or action.

That statement is a thing of beauty. And seconded on the pain of trying to get a clear and concise answer from anyone at LJ/6A.
Hi and welcome!

I've read your comments in stardust_rains entry and found them quite interesting. So, hi! *waves*

By toolbar do you mean that thing at the top of the page with links to posting, filtering your friends page and such?

If so, you set that by going to Manage Profile and clicking on the link at the top of that page to set your viewing options. It's called the navigation strip, if memory serves. No payment required.
The navigation strip is available from the Viewing options page :)
Thanks for this link, you helped me fix something that I didn't even realise I was missing! :-)
You can look at [info]asylum_promo and [info]fandomdirectory to help look for communities, or try searching by interest. I can already tell you there's some FMA comms -- [info]fma and [info]hagaren_fans, as well as some more specific communities for pairings and stuff. No Escaflowne community that I know about yet. (I picked out those two fandoms from your userinfo because I'm kind of in those -- I wouldn't have a clue about the others.)
This post previously posted to 07refugees has links to some anime communities.
"I'm not just saying that; I try to participate in no_lj_ads as much as possible, too, if/when I can add info."

*raises eyebrow* Well, that's a strange way of seeing things. I wouldn't say AD gives us info at no_lj_ads. He may have done it, I won't say he didn't (that would mean going through tons of posts to check) but if I had to name someone, I would speak of janinedog or chasethestars or even kimmi8.
Also, he usually pops up here and there to make a comment but very rarely answer people's replies. Despite what he often states, I've never gotten the impression that he was particularly interested in talking with users. He says what he wants to say and that's about it.
Nnngh... I'm none too keen on the idea of big corporates using Occam's Razor when they act hypocritical about it.

But seriously, a big "Wtf?" to Anildash for breaking my brain with his wall of text and policy-babble.
. . . Actually, now that I've done some thinking with my head and not my heart, and Google-hunting, I think I've maybe figured out what the truth is that does use Occam's Razor, or KISS as I know it.

It is an outside influence on 6A's action, but it isn't a activist group or the advertisers, but another company vital to LJ's existence, their ISP.

Yes, LJ doesn't own their own servers, Internap does.

If articles of what happened in July with the blackout in San Fran that took out LJ are correct on that company's relationship with 6A, then it's simple to think that Internap is putting pressure on 6A to remove this content when it turns up in abuse reports. It's happened many times over to a friend of mine with his site where they ordered him to remove hentai of Cham Cham from some fighting game. If he didn't, they're pull the plug.

It's as simple as that.

I'm just waiting for an official answer from a letter I plan to send.
Still, Internap may own the servers and equipment, but they don't have the right to tell their clients what they can/can't host on the service if it doesn't violate local/federal laws. That's cyber-extortion.

If only Internap had their ToS public.
Then again, I'm not a lawyer, so I can't really say knowingly what they're committing here.
I know what you mean. All I know is that it did happen to my friend, but I am not a lawyer.

It's why I scurried off to fandom_lawyers to ask.
Off-topic, but I absolutely adore your icon. :D

And yeah, fandom_lawyers is a good place for legal counsel for fandomers.
Valcome! *cackle*

Anil Dash is a tool. Makes me think of the first episode of Scrubs where JD's saying about how some people just give off this first impression, and the doctor's walking around going "I'm a tool, I'm a tool. Tool tool, I'm a tool."

Yeaaahhh.

I'd be so tempted to send him a "thank you for the new users" e-card with a screen-cap of the number of members in this asylum, but he'd probably reply and I don't want to actually have a conversation with him.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!

Thanks so much for that visual. I'm going to be chuckling to myself over it for days. Hehehe.
