CHAOS, FOG and a PARADE
A STARTING IC/OOC EVENT
ARRIVAL OF THE NEW PEOPLE / THE PARADE The fog has cleared and you find yourself standing in the downtown streets of an unfamiliar town. And you’re not alone. There are dozens of people lining the sidewalks on either side of Main Street, cheering. At first you think they’re excited that the fog has finally lifted, but then you realize that a parade is heading towards you.

But it’s not just any normal parade. This is an all out affair that appears to involve most of the town and its residents. If you’re familiar with Earth history there might even be a kind of nostalgic vibe to the event. The closer you look at the parade, however, the more peculiar it appears. The marching band majorettes, for example, are waving flags with an image of a mutated lobster on it. And the drum corp is dressed like lobsters, banging away at the snare with hands sticking out of their large claws.

There’s a float that rolls by afterwards featuring a teenage girl in a bright pink dress sitting atop a decorative throne. She waves to everyone on the side of the street. “Wow! The pig farm sure crowned a beauty for the pageant this year!” one of the locals says. Sure enough, around the throne are four large swine, devouring slop at the girl’s feet.

A bright blue Cadillac slowly drives after the float. The logo for Dolan’s Auto Shop is written on the side and a man with a wide smile honks toots on the horn which lets out an eerie jingle. After that a group of mimes dance around the crowd. One in front holds up a sign for The Tommyknocker Theatre Troupe.

And so on.

Everyone you try to talk to is friendly. The street vendors offer you free hotdogs and ice cream.

All of it is completely normal.

But then why does it make you feel so uneasy?

NOTES You know the drill! Get in the comments! (Insert Brennan Lee Mulligan gif here.)

If you don't know the drill, that's okay! IC/OOC events can be a little overwhelming when just starting out. I wrote an essay about it here if you want to know what's up.

SPECIAL THANKS Round of applause to our very own Marty McChaa for writing up this lovely event for us and finding the images.

The coding can be found at Tess's patreon if you want to have it on hand for your very own. ♥ We're Tess stans here.

Pain was delicious to be sure. Especially when it came to inflicting it on the damned souls that were left in his care. Yet in a host vessel Bel really didn't feel much. Most of the time a demon could heal the meat suit that it was wearing; and perhaps the right spell or two could restore the eyes to the body that formally belonged to Jack. But doing so would require effort, and time. Which was why Belphegor really hadn't bothered. He was fine with sticking to the sunglasses, since his astral sight was all he needed, when it came to a sense of sight.

No, actually putting in the effort to fix the damaged vessel just sounded so very boring. Especially when he could put his time towards things like snacking on such delectable treats as the sweet and salty kettle corn. However after finishing off the latest handful of popcorn the demon found his hollow gaze drifting back down below. Not towards the pigs and their princess this time around, but instead he found himself intrigued by something else altogether. Without saying a word he handed her the bag of kettle corn, only to suddenly vanish completely. But in the span of a heartbeat or three Bel suddenly reappeared...this time with a plastic cooler brimming with ice, and ice cold beers.

"How ingenious...transporting ice in a tub like this. And from the smile of the owner's face, these glass bottles seemed to hold a tasty liquid too." With care he fished out one of the cold beers; studying it intently to sort out just how to best get the top off, yet with a shrug the slothful demon ended up using a touch of telekinesis on the bottle cap. Causing it to rip right off with him every actually touching it, and allowing Bel to pause and sniff the substance for a second. After taking a measured sip, then two, he smiled anew. This time gulping down a few swigs before letting out a satisfied sound. "Help yourself. There's plenty to go around."

Questions were good. As was an inquisitive mind too. Still there was nothing that said that they couldn't ponder those questions and answers over drinks and a snack. "I've been to the 'ghost line' around the town, and took a peek into the fog too. Nearest I can figure, there's a barrier spell of sorts at play. Not one I'm dabbled with though, so I couldn't really say just how it could be brought down. But...well to be honest, I don't know how hard I'd really try to get out, since I'm on vacation here."

Addie's window of opportunity opened and closed so fast she barely even registered it was there. She was still standing on the roof, rooted to the spot, popcorn bag in hand, when the stranger reappeared with the ice cooler.

"Did you just..." Pop in and out of existence? Teleport? Both things she'd seen Luc do and knew were possible. At the Agency, there had been people like Strange, who could conjure Christmas decorations out of thin air. Magic was real and boundless and sometimes even beautiful.

This wasn't that.

The tension in the air thickened, a band pulled taut, about to snap. "Vacation from where?" Addie heard herself ask. She wasn't sure she wanted to know. As for the beers, she was parched and tempted, but a growing, instinctive wariness kept her from reaching out.

Truth be told, the demon hadn't even stopped to think that teleporting right then and there might have been a bit peculiar. If anything Bel had simply spotted that cooler of beer and found himself interested to try out the human drink for himself. So without giving it any real thought at all he popped down there, snagged the plastic cooler, and popped right back up onto the roof. With none one being any wiser for it, save for Addie herself.

When she seemed earnestly surprised though, and started to question just what had happened, Belphegor merely scratched his head before chiming in. "Yeah, sorry about that...should've given you a heads up or something first. So uh, yep. I can teleport, and do other cool stuff too." The question of just how much to share was on the forefront of his mind, but when she asked about just where he was from Bel figured honesty was the best policy. After all, hiding who he was, or more accurately 'what' he was, could likely end up backfiring down the line. Especially if a hunter showed up, or anyone else that could tell his demonic nature. "I'm from far down South, or the Pit of Hell to be technical. But it's all good. You've not nothing to fret from me, since I really am on vacation as far as I am concerned. The name's Belphegor, but feel free to call me Bel. And just who might you be?"

As the demon waited for her reaction to the bombshell he just dropped, Bel let his gaze lazily drift back down to the parade below. Happy to take a few more swigs from his beer, and to grab another handful of the kettle corn too, while the odd display continued along the main street. "You think they put on a parade every week? Or is this some sort of special thing, on account of us arriving here in their town?"

"They don't seem particularly interested in including us... I'm sorry." Addie shook her head, bewildered. "Did you just say the pit of hell? Actual hell?" Leprechauns? Sure. Surgeons turned sorcerers? Why not?

A Campari-loving elderly man stuck in the body of a time-traveling preteen? Bring it on.

But a demon straight out of hell was, apparently, the point at which Addie needed to sit down. So she did, right there on the edge of the roof, not two feet from where Belphegor had been seated. She dangled a foot over the edge, clutching the other knee to her chest. After a few moments, she exchanged the bag of popcorn for a can of beer. She didn't recognize the label when she popped the tab.

"Sweeney talks about Jesus some, but I didn't figure that was... Why are you here? I know you said vacation, but - you're, what, a devil?" Did they get vacations that didn't involve leading poor hapless down the road to perdition? "I've spent a long time the whole heaven and hell thing was just a story." And today of all days, she'd have that illusion shattered. Great timing.

Addie drank deep and wiped her mouth on the back of her hand. "I'm Ade-" The name stuck in her throat once more and frustration temporarily overrode her fear. "I guess you might as well call me Addie."

Earnestly, Bel hadn't really been trying to shock the young woman with his little shared bit of confession. If anything he merely figured that things would be a bit easier in the long run, if he was upfront with the other fog refugees. Still there was no denying that her bewildered expression held a bit of amusement for him all the same. "Sure. Actual hell. That's been my home for...well I've stopped keeping count over the last few thousand years, but I've been down there for a very long time."

As she took a seat he made no effort to shy away, nor to get closer. In fact, Bel barely moved at all, save for finishing off his beer and fishing out a second. The mention of someone named Sweeney didn't ring any bells, though when she asked why he was here the demon actually glanced back to Addie for a moment. That eyebrow arching ever so slightly as that little crooked smile returned once more. "Well I'm here because the fog decided to take me, just like you. Wasn't exactly planned, or expected. But since I'm here now, I figured I'd make the most of it."

Being called a devil did draw forth that chuckle again, along with a tiny shake of his head. "Nah, he's dead. I'm just your run of the mill, 9 to 5 clock punching demon...okay, so maybe you'd not be wrong in saying I was also one of the Princes of Hell too, but I'm not like those other idiots. If anything I'm a lot more chill, and laid back. Though that might be why they called me the demon of Sloth. Cause I always was the lazy sort."

Hearing that the woman figured heaven and hell were just a story didn't surprise Bel in the slightest. If anything, a lot of damned souls that ended up in his care had believed the very same thing. Only to be in for quite the shock when they died. "Both are real, though likely not quite like the stories you've heard. Angels are total dicks. Seriously. If you ever meet one, run or prepared to be bored to tears."

That brow of his furrowed a bit when she tried to utter her name, only to fail. And when she offered up Addie, the demon nodded his head. "If you're fretting over speaking your true name to me, cause you think I'd use it to take your soul or something, that's really not my bag. I'm not one of those crossroads demons, who go around making deals with humans. So like I said before, you really don't have to fret about me."

Her thirst quenched and her wariness somewhat drowned by the beer, Addie observed her companion. Between the sunglasses and the whole demonic thing, he wasn't terribly easy to read. But he insisted he didn't mean her harm and, after a few moments spent weighing the veracity of his words, Addie resigned herself to not being able to tell if he was lying.

"My mother always warned me I'd end up keeping low company." She winced when she realized how that sounded. "Sorry, I don't mean... This is just a lot to take in." Leprechauns were stories. Sorcerers belonged in fairytales. Demons, though? They made up the fabric of every fire and brimstone sermon she'd heard growing up.

But Belphegor wasn't living up to the reputation. Without quite turning her head, Addie glanced away from him and toward the parade going on below. "Some place you picked for a vacation. Was Las Vegas overbooked? Someone once told me that's where the devil goes to party," she added with a wry smile.

Oh lying came naturally to a demon for sure, but putting that much energy into coming up with a deception of any kind just seemed like a bit too much work for Bel. If anything, he was fine sticking with the truth. Though maybe leaving out little details worked as well. Sure sure, he could share but from what Belphegor could see...well he had already given the pretty young woman more than enough to handle already.

That remark of hers, about him being low company, didn't offend the demon at all. If anything his smile just grew a tad as he chuckled warmly aloud. Only to shrug and shake his head. "It's cool. Technically speaking, you can't get lower then Hell itself, so you'd be right in calling me low company." Had it been any other demon that was sitting right here, well things likely would've played out far differently. But Bel wasn't the sort to get offended, nor one to let a few unintentional words even ruffle his feathers.

When she switched gears, and brought up Las Vegas, he actually grinned from ear to ear. "Now there's a thought. I suppose I could just leave this quaint creepy town behind, and head over to Vegas to have some fun. Already figured out that I can cross through the ghost line with ease...but I'd have to leave this body behind, and I've grown quite attached to it. So I figured it'd be fun to stick around this place. At the very least, well it's certainly not dull."

Addie arched her brow. "It's not?" The parade was a little weird, she'd grant him that. And the fog thing was a first for her. But what little she'd seen of the town seemed pretty mundane, even if, as he'd said, it was a tad on the creepy side.

Then again, maybe to a clock-punching demon, mundane with a side of creepy was perfectly novel. Who was Addie to judge?

"I guess it has its charms," she hedged, watching the crowd below. "What you're saying is that we can't leave or we'll essentially... die." She knew of no other way to turn into a ghost and that wasn't possible for her, thanks to the curse. But neither was she in a rush to find out. "Does that mean this is just your vacation body?" Did he have a spare for working in hell? And had he fashioned this one the way Luc sometimes fashioned his guises - or was there something a little more unsavory at work here?

It was Bel's turn to look a little surprised when she asked about the town not being dull. Though when it was clear that she wasn't just kidding or teasing him, the demon scratched his head before chiming in one more. "To be fair, this is just the second human town I've been to in the last few thousand years. But from what I've seen, I'd hardly call this place dull. I mean, there's the ghosty ghost thing going on. Plus it's not hard to smell that there's all kinds of other creatures lurking around too. On top of that, well the human residents are all charmingly off their rocker a bit as well. So yeah, I'd hardly call this place dull."

The place was creepy and quaint for sure. Good food and drinks, entertainingly bizarre locals, and the mystery of that fog...all of it proved to be anything other than boring. At least, as far as the demon was concerned. "On top of all that, there's some serious magic in the air as well. Can't pinpoint any singular source, but it's there all the same. And as lazy as I generally am when it comes to pretty much everything, I've been studying magic for countless centuries. So I find that to be a real source of intrigue too."

The question of his vessel being a vacation body earned Addie another warm chuckle, and a slight shrug of Bel's shoulders too. "I suppose you could call it that. Demons don't have physical form. So if we want to interact with the world, well a vessel is needed. This one belonged to a friend of a friend. The kid died, was slain by God himself...hence the burned out eyes...and so when I came topside to help save the world, well it was easier to just hop into this body since no one was using it."

He was right, of course, and Addie wondered when she'd gotten so high and mighty that she couldn't appreciate a bit of weirdness when it was staring her in the face. Only, it wasn't that she didn't appreciate it. She was still stuck on what had happened at the Agency. On the knowledge that she couldn't go back.

On the dying embers of the first proper job she'd had in decades, not to mention a rare shot at a somewhat full life. But all of that was gone now and she was apparently stuck here, in this charmingly bizarre town, a prisoner behind a wall of fog, still cursed.

The more she thought about it, the worse she felt. So instead, she drank. And listened to a demon explain the circumstances of his leave-taking from hell.

"So... you're basically wearing a corpse?" Addie burped. "Fuck me, that's dark."

Of all the questions she might have asked, in response to his little revelations, the last one Bel expected to hear was her inquiry about him wearing a corpse. However there was no frown to be seen. Nor any mocking laughter either. If anything the demon just offered up a slight smile before shrugging once again. "Yep, this is a corpse for sure. Fresh, and 'alive' thanks to me being behind the wheel. But I figured this was the better option, over possessing a live host. I mean that's something I can easily do, yet the world was ending so I opted for this vessel to help speed things along."

Oh it was dark, darker then she even knew given Jack's relationship with the angel and hunters that Bel had teamed up with. And maybe the demon had taken a smidge of pleasure in seeing Cas seethe with barely restrained rage every time that celestial bore had looked over at him. "My own human body became dust ages ago, so there's no going back to it even if I wanted to. So here I am, in this form and figure. Personally though, beyond the missing eyes, I think this face suits me pretty well."

Vanity had never really been his greatest sin, but there was no denying that this world was filled with pretty people. Like Addie, for instance. So when it came to a vessel, well the demon was pleased with the one he had picked. Even if he lacked the ability to physically roll his eyes at someone, or to even wink.

"If the alternative is dust, I guess anything's better." And while that might have made for a sharp barb directed at Belphegor, Addie was thinking only of herself and what she had agreed to, long ago, if only to preserve her freedom.

She drained the can of beer and placed it carefully on the edge of the roof between the two of them. "You said there's magic in the air here. Do you have any idea what kind? Or what it does?" Was the fog a prison keeping them in or also a wall keeping out anything that might try to get in?

"I don't know much about how that works." Magic or gods or any of it. All she knew was that she had given up her name and her memory to survive. She'd be damned if Luc caught up to her now.

He had once been human, without a doubt. Yet so much time had stretch by that Bel earnestly couldn't recall much of that former life. No, he had spent countless lifetimes down in the Pit of Hell. First as a damned soul being tortured and turned, then as a demon too. So when it came to things like fretting over a body turning to dust, that sort of business didn't really even register to him any more. Not when he was no longer flesh and blood. And certainly it didn't matter now, since he had come so close to being obliterated by Castiel. "Yep. Having a vessel is handy for sure...it lets me try human things again, like eating and drinking all these delicious treats and beer."

That smile finally faded when Addie asked about the magic in the air, and for a moment or two the laid back demon actually seemed to sit up a little straighter as he seriously mulled the inquiry over. "It's hard to say for sure. From what I have noticed though, well I guess it's like a giant mixture of different magics...all churning together and stuck inside this town at once. Some of it is ancient though. Really old, and dark, and so very twisted too. There's almost cracks of that stuff seeping in around the edges; but as far as where it leads, or where it comes from, I've got no clue."

It should have been all manner of unsettling, but the demon was more curious about that shadowy magic that permeated the area, and less concerned. "There's some powerful barrier like mojo up as well. Which sounds stupidly obvious given the whole ghost line thing, but still it's impressive all the same. I've worked some barrier spells myself, and whatever is up and running right now...I can't even begin to imagine just how much power it took to get that up and to hold it in place."

To hear him tell it, Belphegor didn't know why that was. It ought to have reassured Addie, who though separated from her Christian beliefs by a few hundred years had still been raised to believe the devil - and all his servants - first in wiliness and second in power only to God Himself.

And yet she was far from easy with the knowledge gained. She leaned back on her hands. "It's going to get people's backs up, if they can't leave and there's forces at play they can't bring to heel. Might want to watch who you share you personal information with." In a pressure cooker of riled up folks, undesirables often got the short end of the stick. And you couldn't get more undesirable than a literal representative of hell.

Maybe it was absurd to worry; Belphegor could teleport. He'd likely be fine. And perhaps most people wouldn't think as she did. She was fretting for nothing, seeing threats where there weren't any.

Well. It took her mind off other things.

"You may need to get out more, if you think this popcorn is delicious. There's a pizza place I saw on my way into town. Looked pretty authentic." She lifted a shoulder. "Smelled like it, too. Probably empty right about now, with everyone here..."

Bel hadn't given much thought to just how others might react if they knew what was out there in the town, unseen as it might be. If anything, the demon just figured that he'd answer her question since there was no real reason to lie about the magic he felt all over the town, or about his demonic nature.

Still when Addie warned him about being careful who he told, Belphegor found himself nodding ever so slightly. Only to pause and down the rest of his beer before finally speaking up anew. "That's a fair point. Figured it'd be better to just be honest, given that things could be worse if I lied about my nature, only to have the truth come out later on. But I'll keep your advice in mind going forward."

Sure he wasn't exactly worried about the locals, or the other refugees either. Since there were very few things in existence that could actually kill him outright. Let alone actually do any real damage to him either. But stirring up trouble just sounded like a surefire way to draw unwanted attention. Which in turn would likely become a headache that he'd much rather avoid.

It was the mention of pizza that really piqued Bel's interest though. And with a Cheshire cat like grin the demon found himself genuinely curious to give the new food a try. So when Addie spoke of the restaurant likely being empty right now, thanks to the parade going on, he finally rose up and took a second to stretch, before offering an extended hand. "Well trying new tasty dishes sounds pretty good, and I think I've had my fill of watching the parade. So I'm game for popping into the place and trying this pizza out."

Warning a demon of all people about potential pitchforks and torches was probably silly of her, but what was done was done and Addie had no regrets. Not yet, anyway. Not about this.

And maybe there was something to be gained from it, too. She stared at his hand for a moment, then stood, more slowly than Bel had, from the edge of the roof. "Lead the way."

The last time she had teleported on the arm of a dangerous man, she'd done so with a plan. She had none, now, but Bel seemed keen on the pizza and, if she was falling back on old habits, Addie wouldn't say no to free food.

With a slow exhale, she placed her hand in his.
