There is a way to do it after all.

I have come across the capability to import both the post and the comments at lj.rossia.org. An example of an imported event is here.

It seems that it is possible to import the comments because of the capability to add @lj at the end of the username in the site that one migrates to.

I have no idea what the posts are about, since I do not speak Russian. Please inform me if it is not advisable to link to others' personal entries.

I am not technologically inclined, and it seems to be a site capability moreso than a program. As it stands, LJ-sec does not import comments (which is a problem because for those of us who have stayed on LJ for a significant number of time may at times have more valuable exchange in the comments page than in the original post)

Comments

Wow, I'd like to know how they did this. :o
Me too. I want to bring a community or two over.
Wow, that's awesome.

And completely useless for me at this point. *headdesk*
*facepaws herself* Yup. Im already out of LJ. The script I used did import things quite nicely but no comments. Other problem is that all the usertags in my past entries got changed to IJ usertags and of course these people are still on LJ accounts. I dont knwo if I want to go through going back and changing them all

It's not something I'd ever do. I have way too many entries, that importing it with LJ-sec already causes some problems.

I'm still on LJ...
Yeah. I cant remember the name of this script that did the import. I believe it was Perl or something. For the most part it worked fine. The LJuser to IJ user is the only dislike but originally I didnt think about that. Only alter I realized, "oh crap".

I couldnt use LJsec anyway.

I thought about that briefly, about taking the LJ usertags off, since obviously those folks are on LJ and not IJ. But I thought, "Wow, that would be a lot of trouble--I'll just leave it alone...at least for now." :-)
Yeah. I have been blogging since the first half of 2002. I would drive myself mad. I am usre I wont be the only journal on this IJ site that will have IJ tags for members that dont exist (because they are actually LJ members)

Kat
I hear ya--my LiveJournal spanned January 2001-January 2008.
Completely useless for me, too. I copied all my posts into Notepad, which did not allow me save comments. Nor did I save my posts to my hard drive or in LJ-Sec or with LJ Archive, and I deleted my LJ so it's too late now. Something like 600 comments gone.
Well, I still try to backup things in LJcomments in LJBook, but that's pdf.
LJ Archive claims to download posts and comments, but I never got a chance to try it since I didn't know about it until after I deleted everything.
I use LJ Archive to download them. But since my computer is old, it is perhaps even more unreliable to archive on my computer more than reposting it. To repost it to another LJ-based service, I used LJ-sec, which does not support comment.
How long ago did you delete? If it's been less than 6 months there's a chance it might still be on the servers- you could temporarily undelete, archive everything, and then delete it again (if you wanted).
Wait a second..are you kidding? I can undelete my entire LiveJournal, including 600 comments? *passes out cold* Please tell me how. I deleted it around Dec. 11th - it's two-year anniversary.
Oh, I see what you mean. Undelete the entire journal. It can't be done. Me and [info]alchemy are both out of luck: we chose to delete our entries post-by-post, you know, the much harder and completely irreversible way. At least I didn't have *cough* over 2,000 posts to delete one by one, unlike *cough* some people did.
Yeah, that's what I meant - *wince* - sorry! You might check the Google cache, CoralCDN, or Archive.org on the off chance they might have a cached version somewhere....
Thanks for the last tip, but been there, did that and no t-shirt to show for it, either (but I have *not* tried Coral yet...never even occurred to me - so if I were to find my entire LJ and all the comments there - highly unlikely, IMO - how would I go about restoring them like you are suggesting?).
In the unlikely event you did find a copy, you wouldn't be able to restore the journal, but at least you could save copies of the posts and comments most important to you with something like Scrapbook, Httrack, or even just screencaps.

*shrugs*
Oh, I see. I have all my entries saved to my spare hard drive, just none of the comments. And honestly, I would never turn Anti-AOL into a book...there is no continuity to it whatsover. I post when I feel like it (not on a schedule), and I often go months without updating. I probably will stop updatng for good some time this year, when AOL finally goes down the crapper like I've been waiting for it to. I'm tired of writing about them and I've been tired of it since early fall of last year. But thanks for all the suggestions, some very good stuff.
