I bought my account during the Strikethrough fallout in mid-June.

Other reasons I've seen for leaving:
  • Nipplegate '06, when LJ decided you can't show female nipples & aureolas in default icons--even if those nipples are directly involved in feeding a baby. (The idea of an act that's legal in public being forbidden for "explicit sexuality or obscenity" on LJ bothered a lot of people.)
  • Strikethrough, Round 2: Boldthrough
  • Flagging/SUP, which would be two separate issues, except that they hit so close together there's no real difference.
Other individual reasons include:
Suspended (or censured) for posting someone's "personal info" that was googleable or whois-able,
suspended for mistaken identity as troller,
tired of evasions and refusal to answer questions about TOS,
unsure which content they want to post is acceptable,
and the occasional "the software on my account is just fucked up and LJ doesn't know why."
"It's not an ad; it's a Gift!"

A few days later, I created my account here. It took the SUP-buyout "celebration" faceslap to compel me to finally undertake a proper migration and bid farewell to my f-list.
OMG, I forgot about those stupid "gift/ads" that you could give out.
I hadn't paid much attention to their stupid before that. Since I'm not into fandom, Strikethrough was barely a blip on my radar. But when the vainglorious announcement came through that they were going to let us pay to spam our friends with ads (YAY!), and they clearly expected us to believe they were doing it as an act of kindness and generosity, I just totally dropped my teeth. World-Class Stupid. It just don't get no stupider than that. After that, nothing they did surprised me, no matter how patently idiotic or offensive.

Well...

they were going to let us pay to spam our friends with ads (YAY!)

In the interests of accuracy, the sponsored virtual gifts were free (but rate limited) to give to people, thus ensuring the maximum amount of viral ads would be spread across the site.

Re: Well...

Ah. Kinda' like HPV, only not as generous.
