Der Spiegel article

In case no one's come across this yet - an article from Der Spiegel which I'm informed is sort of like Time Magazine. And for those of us who don't speak German, napiers_bones on GJ translated it.

Wow. That was quick. *closes "update journal" window*

I found it quite telling, by the way, that the author used the male pronoun to refer to users throughout the whole article (except for ponderosa121)-- something that inevitably gets lost in the translation into english. Sure, the german pronoun for 'user' is male, but if they knew more about LJ fandom (or slash fandom in general?), they'd have used the female pronoun because it's way more likely that the user in question is female.
Yeah, it really seemed like the writer didn't know very much about the situation, though some of that at least could have been because subtleties were lost in translation. The quotes from the email were mistranslated, for example, and some parts imply that those quotes from Barak were about the current issue rather than the original stuff back in May.
It was a very ambivalent article, so to speak, even without the translation. On the one hand, the author mentions that fandomers are very creative and not just about the porn, but one paragraph down he talks about the management sucking it up to the "sex-fans". (Because if 6A had a spine, they clearly wouldn't do that, and we all know that actually the fans just worry about their porn, right?)
As a whole, it comes across as rather condescending. Besides, there's a clear confusion re: strikethrough events / boldthrough debacle. In the discussion thread on the official forum, several fans have spoken up already and mentioned some of the issues.
Eh, I found the (fixed) version quite okay... there are mistakes in the details, but quite honestly - it's better than it could've been, it partially sympathizes with fandom... and the author had enough of a spine to admit he made mistakes and edited the article.

That's far more than we could've hoped for, even disregarding the fact that an actual *quality* newspaper is writing about it, in a fairly easily accessible spot AND that most of the comments in the forums are positive.

I'm quite happy with it as it is; minor mistakes can really be excused.
