Title: Healing What Was Broken

Hakkai’s fingers delicately traced the skin above Gojyo’s ribs, taking care not to press down.

Gojyo squirmed and winced.

“You’ll be better in just a few moments,” Hakkai smiled. Rubbing his hands together he stimulated the chi in his palm chakras, settling into a meditative state to focus on the afflicted area.

Hakkai could feel-see bruised muscles and where the ribs had broken. Manipulating the chi in Gojyo’s body and infusing him with heightened chi, he was able to reposition the bones and knit them back together.

A soft kiss completed the process, taking away any pain that Gojyo felt.

“Wh…whose idea was it to go up the mountains?”

Sanzo huddled closer to Gojyo, squeezing him so he wouldn’t be able to talk.

Goku huddled against the both of them, holding Hakuryu against his chest.

Hakkai kneeled nearby, struggling to light a fire with his shaking hands. Every time he got a flame from the lighter it would get blown out by the wind.

After a dozen failed attempts he was ready to die in the snow.

Gojyo wrapped his arms around him, with Sanzo and Goku flanking him.

With renewed warmth he managed to get a steady fire going.

Title: Marshmallows Around the Fire

Goku reached into the bag of marshmallows and happily popped several into his mouth. “Shtuf ish gwate!”

“Don’t talk with your mouth full,” Sanzo muttered.

Gojyo asked, “You ever roast your marshmallows?”

“Roast them?”

Hakkai sat beside Gojyo and demonstrated, carefully turning the marshmallow over the fire, getting the outside toasted just right. He offered it to Goku with a smile.

Goku ate it and leapt up after he swallowed. “It’s gooey in the center! Let me try!!” He grabbed the stick and yelped as his marshmallow lit on fire.

“That’s the best kind,” Gojyo said, blowing it out.

“YUM!!!”

Title: Alone in the Jeep

“Hey Sanzo.”

“What?”

“Remember when we went over that REALLY big bump and you were smoking your cigarette and you bit it so hard that it snapped in half?!”

“No.”

“No??? That was SO funny!” Goku laughed and bounced in the jeep.

Sanzo cast an eye to the marketplace. Gojyo and Hakkai were taking an awfully long time…

“Oh! Hey Sanzo, remember when that lady got lipstick ALL over your robes?”

Sanzo turned to Goku. “Do you remember when you got pushed out of the jeep into a puddle?”

“Huh?”

Sanzo gave a peaceful smile and an especially mighty shove.

Gojyo inched next to Hakkai, smiling as he met the other man’s eyes. “We’re alone.”

“Indeed we are,” Hakkai murmured.

They leaned in close for a kis-

“Hey guys!!”

Gojyo and Hakkai leapt apart.

“Don’t you KNOCK, monkey!”

“Can we help you, Goku?”

Goku opened his mouth to speak, but paused. His brows furrowed and he scratched his head. “Actually, I forgot what I came in here for.”

Gojyo sighed and facepalmed.

“Kindly knock the next time, Goku.”

“Okay, Hakkai,” Goku said brightly.

When Goku left the room, Gojyo locked the door and turned to Hakkai.

“Now, where were we?”

Title: Pit Stop

“I don’t feel so good,” Goku groaned. “I think I ate somethin’ bad.”

“I told you not to eat that extra helping at the Inn,” Sanzo said.

“Grrargh,” Goku moaned, rolling to his side. “Can we stop? I’m gonna hurl.”

Gojyo leapt back and Hakkai screeched the vehicle to the halt.

Goku ran into the bushes and proceeded to relieve the contents of his stomach.

“Someone should go check on him,” Hakkai said.

Sanzo shifted. “Why are you looking at me?”

Hakkai drummed his fingers on the wheel.

“Fine,” Sanzo said. “We should stop for the night anyway.”

Hakkai smiled.

Title: Defense Against Nightmares

Hakkai woke in a sweat, the last images of carnage fluttering across his vision. It took him a few moments not to see red.

He startled at the flare of light in the corner, relaxing at the scent of smoke.

“You all right,” Gojyo took a drag on his cigarette, the embers casting a red hue on his face.

Hakkai shivered.

Gojyo dropped the cigarette out the window, into the rain. “It’s just a nightmare, you know.”

“But, what if the nightmare was once real? What if it happens again?”

“I’ll kick its ass,” Gojyo said. “Now, get some sleep.”

Title: Through the Darkness

He stared up at Rasetsunyo, the shadows of her bonds covering him in darkness.

His memories of their time together grew dim. Snatches of the past flickered in his mind, illuminated by the fireflies that tended to his dreams.

He felt her hand on his cheek, smelled the sweet oils she always wore, heard her words whispered at his bedside, saw the way she smiled, and tasted the special meals she cooked despite the servants’ displeasure.

The sensations only lasted for so long.

“I will save you Mother,” he murmured. “No matter what, I will rescue you from this prison.”

“I…uh…I’m sorry!”

Yaone blushed, grabbed for a towel. “I…it’s not your fault! I should have locked the door, Kougaiji-sama.”

Kougaiji fumbled for the door.

“Onii-chan!”

Kougaiji jumped. “Lirin, it’s you.”

“What were you doing?”

“Nothing!”

“You can’t fool me,” Lirin said, trying to peek around him.

Kougaiji pressed his hand on her head. “Shouldn’t you be playing somewhere? Away from here?”

“I wanna use the bath.”

“It’s occupied.”

“But…you just came out…” Lirin’s face scrunched up in thought as Kougaiji gulped nervously…if she figured it out, the whole castle would know.

“Let’s get ice cream.”

“YAY ICE CREAM!”

Crisis averted.

Title: Beauty’s Spectrum

Goku looked at the sky and smiled as he soaked in the first rays of sunshine.

Sanzo watched the sunrise with him.

“It’s amazing, isn’t it?”

“I suppose,” Sanzo said.

“I love all the colors,” Goku said. “If you think about it, the sky has been every color.”

“Some of those colors aren’t natural,” Sanzo said. “The colors will become more brilliant as man advances, especially the violet. It’s from the chemicals. The beauty is unnatural and it hides the truth of nature’s destruction.”

“Beauty is beauty,” Goku said. “Natural or not, all the colors are in a rainbow anyway.”

Goku leapt from the nearest tree, dug his toes into the earth, and flopped back onto the grass.

“This is GREAT!”

“You said that last time,” Gojyo said, flopping beside him.

“I know…but, this is extra GREAT!”

“No matter how many times he sees the lush greenery,” Hakkai said, “his amazement is such that he sees it for the first time.”

Sanzo watched Goku and nodded. “He has a lot to catch up on.”

“Hey Sanzo!! Can we stay here just a little longer?”

“Sure,” Sanzo said. “A few more days will be fine.”

“You’re GREAT, Sanzo!! Thanks!!”

Sanzo smiled.

Title: Something Goku This Way Comes

It almost matched Gojyo’s hair.

The sticky red substance trickled down his cheek, staining his clothes as it fell to the earth.

Hakkai stared in shock, chi balanced between his palms. There was nothing he could do.

Sanzo was stunned into silence and touched a hand to his robes. They too were stained.

Goku laughed maniacally. He had gotten them all, snuck on them when their guard was down.

“Monkey,” Gojyo growled. He wiped chunks of tomato off his shoulders. “The next time you pelt me with food I’m going to throw you in the river.”

“I’ll help,” Sanzo growled.

Title: Balance

Chi pulsed from his body.

The battle raged around him and his limiters tingled.

He weaved his fingers, words streaming from his lips as he harnessed the energy in a sphere. It was warm between his palms and he sent it toward the enemy.

A bullet sliced through the energy, its power heightened.

The priest stepped beside him and their weapons merged.

When the battle ended, he tended to the priest’s wounds.

It was all about balance.

He used the chi to heal – to give life.

He used the chi to attack – to take life.

Gods would decide his fate.

Title: I’ll Protect You

Gojyo stirred when he heard a whimper beside him. He rolled over to stroke his partner’s cheek.

“Hakkai,” he whispered. “Wake up.”

“Mmnnn, Gojyo? What’s the matter? Why’d you wake me?”

He would never admit that he had nightmares.

“Thought I heard something, but never mind. It’s all right now.”

Gojyo cuddled against Hakkai and kissed him.

Hakkai closed his eyes and lightly stroked Gojyo’s hair before he fell back asleep.

Gojyo rested his head on Hakkai’s chest, soothed by his steady breathing and the fingers in his hair.

“Don’t worry, Hakkai,” Gojyo murmured, “I’ll protect you from the nightmares.”

Title: Around the Campfire

“Y’know what Sanzo? I think yur a helluva guy.”

“Shut up, Gojyo.”

“Gojyo, now is not the best time-”

“C’mon Hakkai, I just wanna ‘splain things to him,” Gojyo hiccupped. “Where wuz I? Ah yeah, I wuz sayin’ he’s a helluva guy, just misundastood. An’ I wanna say I love him, an’ you, an’ Goku. I love all ya’ll guys. But ya know, not love love…”

“Hakkai, I’m gonna shoot him.”

“Easy Sanzo, he’s fallen asleep.”

“Finally, I need a drink,” Sanzo pried the bottle from Gojyo’s hand and took a swig.

“You really are a ‘helluva guy,’” Hakkai chuckled.

Title: Smoking Section

“Smoking will kill ya, you know.” Gojyo leaned against the wall, took a cigarette from behind his ear.

“You’re one to talk,” Sanzo exhaled smoke.

“Yeah,” Gojyo said. He grinned at the lighter tossed to him. He lit the tip, took a long drag, and tossed the lighter back. “There are worse things out there that’ll kill ya.”

“Hn.”

“The way I figure, this is a consolation to what we see.” Gojyo flicked ash to the ground. “Just wish Hakkai would get off our backs.”

“Your back – he doesn’t care if I have fresh breath.”

Gojyo chuckled. “Damn perceptive monk.”

Title: Supper Time with Lirin

A/N: My first time writing these particular characters. ^__^ I was skimming through Volume 3 of the manga and was inspired, lol.

“You can’t have that, that’s Onii-chan’s supper.” Lirin waggled her finger at the tall man.

“But, I’m starving.” Dokugakuji sniffed at the pot simmering over the fire and wrinkled his nose. “What’s in this?”

“A whole bunch of things! Grass, leaves, lizard guts, bananas-

She rattled on some other ingredients that made Dokugakuji run.

Kougaiji raised an eyebrow at the departure.

“Onii-chan!”

“You…cooked?”

“Yep, it’s REALLY good! Try some!”

Kougaiji sniffed the pot. “I’m actually full Lirin, why don’t you see if Yaone wants some?” He watched her skip off and his stomach growled.

Hunger was a better than nausea.

Title: Shadow Play

Sanzo sat, back to the sun, as he examined his pistol. Its shadow was cast onto the ground and Goku stood behind him.

“Look! It’s got bunny ears.”

Sanzo stared at the bunny-eared pistol and tilted his head.

“And now it’s a dragon. Rawr!”

“Goku…”

“Oooooh, it’s a snaakke! Look out for the snaakke!”

Sanzo sighed and smacked back with his fan.

“Waugh! Hey!”

“Can somebody entertain him,” Sanzo growled.

“Oh come on, this is fun,” Gojyo said. “Heh, what do you think this is?”

“Ewww!”

Sanzo muttered, “Shadow puppetry, who taught them that?”

Hakkai sat quietly and just smiled.

Title: No Turning Back

It was everywhere – the blood.

It seeped through his trembling fingers, caked at his temples, and pooled at his feet.

What have I done? What’s happening?!

His body responded to the carnage at his feet. His blood ran hot and caused blisters to run along his arms. He screamed and tasted metal in his mouth. Red filled his vision and he felt his innards shifting.

Energy roiled around him, burning hot against his skin. He could feel an ancient power filling his soul to the brim, leaving no room for his former life.

It was too late to turn back.

Title: A Meditation on Love

If you try to hold onto to water, it will try to slip through your fingers. Instead, you must join your palms to hold the water steady.

If you try to navigate the rapids of the person’s soul and are not careful, you will find yourself pinned against the rocks.

You may even go over a waterfall and surrender your very being. If you’re lucky, you may survive.

But, if you sit beside the water and acclimate yourself to its flow – you’ll catch the current that leads you to your destination.

Together you’ll be able to keep each other afloat.
