CHAOS, FOG and a PARADE
A STARTING IC/OOC EVENT
ARRIVAL OF THE NEW PEOPLE / THE PARADE The fog has cleared and you find yourself standing in the downtown streets of an unfamiliar town. And you’re not alone. There are dozens of people lining the sidewalks on either side of Main Street, cheering. At first you think they’re excited that the fog has finally lifted, but then you realize that a parade is heading towards you.

But it’s not just any normal parade. This is an all out affair that appears to involve most of the town and its residents. If you’re familiar with Earth history there might even be a kind of nostalgic vibe to the event. The closer you look at the parade, however, the more peculiar it appears. The marching band majorettes, for example, are waving flags with an image of a mutated lobster on it. And the drum corp is dressed like lobsters, banging away at the snare with hands sticking out of their large claws.

There’s a float that rolls by afterwards featuring a teenage girl in a bright pink dress sitting atop a decorative throne. She waves to everyone on the side of the street. “Wow! The pig farm sure crowned a beauty for the pageant this year!” one of the locals says. Sure enough, around the throne are four large swine, devouring slop at the girl’s feet.

A bright blue Cadillac slowly drives after the float. The logo for Dolan’s Auto Shop is written on the side and a man with a wide smile honks toots on the horn which lets out an eerie jingle. After that a group of mimes dance around the crowd. One in front holds up a sign for The Tommyknocker Theatre Troupe.

And so on.

Everyone you try to talk to is friendly. The street vendors offer you free hotdogs and ice cream.

All of it is completely normal.

But then why does it make you feel so uneasy?

NOTES You know the drill! Get in the comments! (Insert Brennan Lee Mulligan gif here.)

If you don't know the drill, that's okay! IC/OOC events can be a little overwhelming when just starting out. I wrote an essay about it here if you want to know what's up.

SPECIAL THANKS Round of applause to our very own Marty McChaa for writing up this lovely event for us and finding the images.

The coding can be found at Tess's patreon if you want to have it on hand for your very own. ♥ We're Tess stans here.

"God no." It was a visceral response given when the other man confirmed he was new too.

Gile's shoulders unsquared slightly as the bow went away. He didn't exactly have anywhere to sheathe a lead pipe, which had been the major impetus of carrying it on his shoulder through a bloody parade. But he did try at least sliding it through the straps of the backpack against his back. The man carried himself like a soldier, so neither of them was probably unarmed, but it was a nice illusion at least while they tested the apparently shared waters.

"Same... through the fog? It's all very Stepford isn't it?"

Okay. Another newcomer. This was getting weird and weirder. He noticed how the kid was caring the pipe, but he didn't say anything. His eyes were scanning the crowd as he listened and then he turned back again and took in the whole sight of the boy.

"Stepford Wives? Yeah. Kinda. I was thinking more Twilight Zone. Something is just a little off and everything is too perfect." He nodded at the pipe. "So, what's up with that?"

"I live in a bad neighbourhood."

On closer examination, Giles didn't seem the coolest of kids, his style was just a little too preppy and dated that read like someone intentionally dressing down. It matched the wire framed glasses and crisp received accent but was discordant to the fact he not only had the industrial pipe but had enough apparent awareness of how to use it. His countenance was almost too involved and concerned for a kid his age.

"The principle's the largely the same. Robots. Aliens. Demons--Mass hypnosis perhaps?"

"Uh-huh", he stared at the kid with a knowing look. He was getting some serious Kate Bishop vibes off him. Not as dangerous as Yelena, but he wasn't someone the average guy should mess with.

Clint's face twitched a little at the suggestion of hypnosis, his mind immediately going back to Loki and that time all those years ago. He shook it off and grumbled. "Better not be." Then looked around again.

"So, where are you from, then? How do you think yo got here?"

Giles had more than one hypothesis as to what could have caused this, but he was certain Ralph Columbo wasn't supposed to know a demon from a hole in the ground that this town could well end up being if no one acted.

"San Francisco, lately." His accent read English, but the English had never felt shame about going about the globe. Giles figured if he had apparently trusted this man enough to follow him and he seemed aware of how strange it was and armed, the only harm was in drawing out a fight. "And I'm not certain. Rwasundi demons can cause localized spatiotemporal distortions. Or Glarghk Guhl Kashmas'nik venom can cause vivid hallucinations. But then why lobster?"

"Okay, I have no idea what those are, and I know I should ask. But, right now...my gut is telling me that whatever this is, it's not demons. Maybe." He sounded unsure when he thought hard on it. Because who knew what those monsters back at the Agency were?

"What do those things look like, anyway? I mean, any tentacles? Weird bugs?" Lobsters. He didn't really know that, either. "Wish I could answer why lobsters, but I'm still having trouble with how the locals are acting like none of this is out of the ordinary."

Clint had observed it right away. None of them were giving the pair strange looks. They just kept focused on the parade. He didn't trust any of it.

"You can never really underestimate how much the general public is willing to disbelieve that which is right before them. Gas leaks, gangs on PCP, bad tuna sandwich. It all is a little easier to take on than another apocalpyse, isn't it?" Although in the wizened watcher, perhaps the opposite was true. If he saw an apocalypse in everything it was only because it often was.

Sort of like how he hoped the swill queen wasn't a planned human sacrifice.

"It doesn't matter what they are really, unless there's more evidence. But no, neither are exactly crab-like. Perhaps a spell? Or--you have a theory?" Giles wasn't sure what it had come to asking a random archer in the street for a theory on a demonic distortion, but the man had engaged back.

Yeah, this was gonna be one of those days. And one of those kids. Clint should have been able to tell right away. He glanced back at him and then nodded. "What did you say your name was?"

He was going to tell more, but for now, he was also measuring out what kind of person he had with him. The kid with the pipe had more experience with strange things than anyone his age should.

Seriously, demons?

There was a brief mental calculus that seemed to flash across the kid's face as such a simple question was answered. Demons he could speak freely about, but his identity was trickier still. He clearly wasn't in San Francisco and he didn't think magical sorts were being target, it was better to go with the name on his ID.

"Oh, it's Ralph. Columbo. I'm Ralph Columbo. I moderate demonwatch on reddit."

Columbo. Okay. He wasn't sure if he bought the name, but he also wasn't really in a place to question it.

"Well, Ralph, my name's Clint. And I think our first step is going to see if we can find a spot in town where other people like us might be gathering." Because he would assume that would be the natural instinct of many, right?

And if there weren't any others....well, they'd deal with that when they got there.
