CHAOS, FOG and a PARADE
A STARTING IC/OOC EVENT
ARRIVAL OF THE NEW PEOPLE / THE PARADE The fog has cleared and you find yourself standing in the downtown streets of an unfamiliar town. And you’re not alone. There are dozens of people lining the sidewalks on either side of Main Street, cheering. At first you think they’re excited that the fog has finally lifted, but then you realize that a parade is heading towards you.

But it’s not just any normal parade. This is an all out affair that appears to involve most of the town and its residents. If you’re familiar with Earth history there might even be a kind of nostalgic vibe to the event. The closer you look at the parade, however, the more peculiar it appears. The marching band majorettes, for example, are waving flags with an image of a mutated lobster on it. And the drum corp is dressed like lobsters, banging away at the snare with hands sticking out of their large claws.

There’s a float that rolls by afterwards featuring a teenage girl in a bright pink dress sitting atop a decorative throne. She waves to everyone on the side of the street. “Wow! The pig farm sure crowned a beauty for the pageant this year!” one of the locals says. Sure enough, around the throne are four large swine, devouring slop at the girl’s feet.

A bright blue Cadillac slowly drives after the float. The logo for Dolan’s Auto Shop is written on the side and a man with a wide smile honks toots on the horn which lets out an eerie jingle. After that a group of mimes dance around the crowd. One in front holds up a sign for The Tommyknocker Theatre Troupe.

And so on.

Everyone you try to talk to is friendly. The street vendors offer you free hotdogs and ice cream.

All of it is completely normal.

But then why does it make you feel so uneasy?

NOTES You know the drill! Get in the comments! (Insert Brennan Lee Mulligan gif here.)

If you don't know the drill, that's okay! IC/OOC events can be a little overwhelming when just starting out. I wrote an essay about it here if you want to know what's up.

SPECIAL THANKS Round of applause to our very own Marty McChaa for writing up this lovely event for us and finding the images.

The coding can be found at Tess's patreon if you want to have it on hand for your very own. ♥ We're Tess stans here.

IC/OOC Carol Danvers

One minute, Carol is blasting and fighting for her life against some sort of large, tentacle creature,t he next she's landing in the street in the middle of a freaking parade.

Captain Marvel will find herself standing up behind some seemingly unphased middle-school band kids, who just march around her as they play their trumpets. She has no idea what is going on, which is probably clear by the look on her face.

It's not the first time she's found herself thrown to Earth unexpectedly, but she will eventually make her way to the sidewalk, looking around and trying to piece together how and why she is there. Still, in her infamous uniform, she's likely to approach people she recognizes. Otherwise, she's going to be on a mission to figure this out quickly and get back into the fight she just left. Wherever and whenever that is.

Rose is bruised and bleeding when the fog clears and she finds herself in the middle of– “a fucking parade? Are you kidding me?” It’s hard to come down from the adrenaline of the fight and she nearly punches the first person who gets too close before realizing what’s going on here.

Spotting Carol is maybe a little bit of a relief, because at least it’s a face she recognizes from around the agency. They didn’t have a chance to know each other well, but Rose thinks the woman seems cool and she’s glad to see someone who isn’t a stranger.

“Carol,” she gasps out, moving toward her. “Thank god. Where the fuck are we?”

Seeing Rose come up was a relief, at least. Okay, so maybe this fog was just screwing with them. She looked around for a second, staring at someone literally dressed as a lobster passing out flyers to some sort of restaurant as they walked down the street and shaking her head.

"I'm going to go out on a limb and say somewhere in Maine," she turned back to the other woman and nodded to her. "Are you injured?" Straight to the point, Carol was still in battle mode. Survey, strategize, and strike or survive. She was clearly waiting for shit to hit the fan.

Rose shook her head. “Cuts and bruises. I’ll heal.” She’d gotten worse just in combat practices with the other novices. Gave worse, too. Usually not on purpose, but the point was still there. Dhampirs were tough. They healed faster than humans and she’d walked off a lot worse.

“The next question is why we’re here and how. You have a working Tempad?” Rose wasn’t one of the lucky ones to have access to one and keeping ahold of some weapons had seemed more important anyway. Right now, though, she thought having one would be nice. Maybe it could give them some answers.

Carol shook her head and sighed. "That's what I get for volunteering for transportation, huh?" She smirked at Rose, even if she really was now regretting it. "Guess we should look around and see what we find. If you and I both made it here, chances are there are others."

She was ready to explore. Carol wasn't really the type to sit around and wait for things to happen to her. Her nature was to take action. Which was why she started to walk, kind of expecting Rose to follow alongside as they made their way through the crowd and she scanned each face.

"Wish I could say this was the first time I've been in a situation like this."

Rose might not really like following orders, but that was mostly when they were bullshit. She’d been trained to follow them and could fall in line when it counted. There was a fine line between when to be irreverent and when to follow the rules and she was pretty good at toeing that line. Or just dancing alongside it. She followed in step next to Carol.

“Exactly like this?” she wondered aloud. She couldn’t help wondering if this was what the human world was actually like. Rose had lived her whole life – save those weeks at the Agency – inside the Dominion, at St. Vladimir’s. She could count on one hand the number of times she’d stepped outside that province and even then, she’d still been in the Moroi world. As much as she and Lissa had dreamed of escaping and living among humans for awhile, she really had no idea what it was truly like there, save that one foray into that world with Adrian and Dimitri, but that really hadn’t been anything like this.

Truth was, Carol and Rose were probably more alike than they would admit. She knew a thing or two about toeing the line, especially when she thought the orders were bunk. But she also relied some on order. It helped give her the structure she needed, especially in the more chaotic times. Like this one, for example.

A snort and a nod, Carol glanced at Hope. "Yeah, exactly like this." She was still smiling as she spoke, looking around as she told her story. "I crash-landed on Earth a few decades ago. I didn't realize I was human at the time, and I didn't really recognize anything. I was chasing a Skrull and I just remember everyone staring at me as I made my way through a crowd like this one." She paused. "Well, not like this one exactly. This place is somehow stranger than L.A."

Truthfully, Rose’s naturally rebellious personality had gotten a huge boost when she realized the people making the rules didn’t give a shit about her or the rest of her species. Dhampirs were seen as expendable to them and realizing that had been the end of Rose being willing to follow their orders anymore. It hadn’t been long after that when she’d decided to leave the dominion, something she’d been in the middle of doing when Mobius had recruited her for the agency.

Now, she was around people who mostly treated her as an equal. No just a body to shield them, but a group of people equally willing to fight for others. That made a big difference in her willingness to follow Carol’s lead now. That and the fact that this all seemed more familiar to her companion than it did to her.

“What’s a Skrull?” That probably shouldn’t have been the takeaway from Carol’s story, but she was curious about that bit more than the rest.

"They're a species that can shift their appearance to look like pretty much anybody or anything. Their homeworld was conquered by the Kree, who I happened to be working for at the time," Carol's smile had fallen as she thought back to it.

"It took me a little while to realize I was on the wrong side of that war. They were just trying to survive." But what did she know at the time? Shaking it off, she tried to continue like it was not a big deal to her. "It was a long time ago."

Rose nodded. It sounded like one of those long, complicated stories that went better with a drink than when they were trying to scope things out and figure out what the hell was going on.

"Do you see anyone else from the agency?" Rose asked, looking around as they walked. She hadn't spotted anyone else she recognized so far. She and Carol couldn't have been the only ones pulled into this though. "I don't think the network is even working. I haven't been able to pull it up."

Carol had considered their options, but Rose's comment about the network did get her thinking. She paused for a second, scanning the crowd then smirking and looking at Rose. "You know, that's a pretty good idea. Come on. It'll be easier away from the crowd"

She started to lead Rose toward the center of town, a little faster now. "I bet I can hack a local network- or a cell signal. Maybe match frequencies to reach out. Were you given one of these?" She held up a phone-like device. "I should have probably questioned it from the beginning, but I was getting my barings."

"That's me, full of good ideas," Rose said cheekily. Grinning, she moved in the direction Carol indicated, easily keeping pace with her.

Most of what Carol said next may has well have been in a foreign language. Rose didn't understand all of those tech things, but she did recognize a smart phone when she saw it.

"I have mine from before and here's the super weird," Rose said, pulling her own phone out of her pocket. "We'd taken out the sim cards and wifi and shit at the Agency, right? To keep the Ultron shit out. I shouldn't be able to connect to anything here, but it all works. I can't get through to anyone I know, but I have a signal. That shouldn't be possible, right?"
