CHAOS, FOG and a PARADE
A STARTING IC/OOC EVENT
ARRIVAL OF THE NEW PEOPLE / THE PARADE The fog has cleared and you find yourself standing in the downtown streets of an unfamiliar town. And you’re not alone. There are dozens of people lining the sidewalks on either side of Main Street, cheering. At first you think they’re excited that the fog has finally lifted, but then you realize that a parade is heading towards you.

But it’s not just any normal parade. This is an all out affair that appears to involve most of the town and its residents. If you’re familiar with Earth history there might even be a kind of nostalgic vibe to the event. The closer you look at the parade, however, the more peculiar it appears. The marching band majorettes, for example, are waving flags with an image of a mutated lobster on it. And the drum corp is dressed like lobsters, banging away at the snare with hands sticking out of their large claws.

There’s a float that rolls by afterwards featuring a teenage girl in a bright pink dress sitting atop a decorative throne. She waves to everyone on the side of the street. “Wow! The pig farm sure crowned a beauty for the pageant this year!” one of the locals says. Sure enough, around the throne are four large swine, devouring slop at the girl’s feet.

A bright blue Cadillac slowly drives after the float. The logo for Dolan’s Auto Shop is written on the side and a man with a wide smile honks toots on the horn which lets out an eerie jingle. After that a group of mimes dance around the crowd. One in front holds up a sign for The Tommyknocker Theatre Troupe.

And so on.

Everyone you try to talk to is friendly. The street vendors offer you free hotdogs and ice cream.

All of it is completely normal.

But then why does it make you feel so uneasy?

NOTES You know the drill! Get in the comments! (Insert Brennan Lee Mulligan gif here.)

If you don't know the drill, that's okay! IC/OOC events can be a little overwhelming when just starting out. I wrote an essay about it here if you want to know what's up.

SPECIAL THANKS Round of applause to our very own Marty McChaa for writing up this lovely event for us and finding the images.

The coding can be found at Tess's patreon if you want to have it on hand for your very own. ♥ We're Tess stans here.

"Okay, that's good." She leaned back to sit more comfortably. People continued on with their parade. The loud noises around them seemed to have gone muffled as if she had submerged herself in water.

"Sometimes they both go blue, and that's not good at all." And only because righting herself brought on physical pain. The screws needed to be loose in her head. That's who she was, after all, delirious. "I don't know what a risk analyst is," she murmured, holding her hands out so that Eddie could share some of his hand sanitizer.

"Look, I am doing what you told me. And look! My hands are getting all squeaky clean." It was true; her hands seemed way less dirty. That is what Eddie wanted, and that is what shall be. "So clean." Her fingers wriggled, showing off her hands.

"Okay. I want to get up now." Within a blink of an eye, Delirium was standing. It happened so quickly that she may have been standing this entire time. How could that be? Delirium was sitting down just a moment ago.

"I don't know first aid, but I am a very good driver."

"Really?"   Eddie blurted out in surprise.   He thought of three possibilities.  One was the old idea that she was messing with him, two was that she had hurt her head and didn't realize what she was saying, and three was that there was truth behind it.  He'd look it up later, and if she was right, he'd start worrying about his own eyes changing colour and what it could mean.   It wouldn't be much of an addition.  He already checked his eyes for jaundice regularly; it was all part of his daily routine.

"It means I work in insurance."   Eddie spared her the longer explanation.  His friends hadn't been interested in the details of risk analysis, neither would a woman suffering a possible concussion.

"Good."  Eddie said.  "I wouldn't want you to get an infection."   He could practically see all the germs on a crowded sidewalk.

When she mentioned getting up, he instinctively reached out a hand to her to help, only to find her already standing before he had the chance to tell her to take it slow.   He stood up as well.  "Are you feeling steady?  It's not a great idea to drive right now.  The parade's blocking the roads."   And he still thought she might have a head injury.

She was not a very good driver. In fact, no one should let her drive ever again.

"Yes, really. It makes me hurt all over." Delirium dusted off the sleeves of her coat and attempted to smooth out all of its wrinkles. Nothing changed; it was still all wrinkly and dirty. She looked down at her legs and at her toes that wiggled through the little holes of her fishnet stockings.

Her head tipped back to look up at him. Eddie was so tall, and she was just a little, little thing. Delirium looked even smaller when standing. The hem of the trenchcoat went all the way down to the ground.

"I am balanced. Do you see? I have not fallen over — Eddie? What do we do now?"

Eddie would have been complimented to know she thought he was tall.   Even when he reminded himself that he was average height, and even when standing next to someone smaller, he still felt like the small kid he once was.   He looked over the crowds; the lobster fanatics showed no sign of stopping the parade and kindly explaining what the hell was happening.   "That's a really good question."

"We need to figure out where we are."  Eddie added a moment later.  His usual ability to find his way home from anywhere was failing him.  He reached into his pocket again, this time for his phone.  The internet was a wonderful tool, letting him research any medical or safety issue in a second, and great for figuring a way out of this mess too.  His phone wasn't in its usual spot and he checked his other pockets.   Shit, that was just wrong.  He was always prepared.  "I can't find my phone.  Do you have one?"
