CHAOS, FOG and a PARADE
A STARTING IC/OOC EVENT
ARRIVAL OF THE NEW PEOPLE / THE PARADE The fog has cleared and you find yourself standing in the downtown streets of an unfamiliar town. And you’re not alone. There are dozens of people lining the sidewalks on either side of Main Street, cheering. At first you think they’re excited that the fog has finally lifted, but then you realize that a parade is heading towards you.

But it’s not just any normal parade. This is an all out affair that appears to involve most of the town and its residents. If you’re familiar with Earth history there might even be a kind of nostalgic vibe to the event. The closer you look at the parade, however, the more peculiar it appears. The marching band majorettes, for example, are waving flags with an image of a mutated lobster on it. And the drum corp is dressed like lobsters, banging away at the snare with hands sticking out of their large claws.

There’s a float that rolls by afterwards featuring a teenage girl in a bright pink dress sitting atop a decorative throne. She waves to everyone on the side of the street. “Wow! The pig farm sure crowned a beauty for the pageant this year!” one of the locals says. Sure enough, around the throne are four large swine, devouring slop at the girl’s feet.

A bright blue Cadillac slowly drives after the float. The logo for Dolan’s Auto Shop is written on the side and a man with a wide smile honks toots on the horn which lets out an eerie jingle. After that a group of mimes dance around the crowd. One in front holds up a sign for The Tommyknocker Theatre Troupe.

And so on.

Everyone you try to talk to is friendly. The street vendors offer you free hotdogs and ice cream.

All of it is completely normal.

But then why does it make you feel so uneasy?

NOTES You know the drill! Get in the comments! (Insert Brennan Lee Mulligan gif here.)

If you don't know the drill, that's okay! IC/OOC events can be a little overwhelming when just starting out. I wrote an essay about it here if you want to know what's up.

SPECIAL THANKS Round of applause to our very own Marty McChaa for writing up this lovely event for us and finding the images.

The coding can be found at Tess's patreon if you want to have it on hand for your very own. ♥ We're Tess stans here.

"It was her." He'd know. He was pretty sure he'd know. If it wasn't her... he couldn't think of another realistic option, really. She had believed it, he was certain, and from what she'd said she remembered everything, including falling. Whoever she was should have been dead, and on the balance of two impossible things, it was more likely that it really had been her than that it hadn't. "I don't know what's going on, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's more than just us four if we all found each other this quickly. Especially if there's something here that has that kind of power."

Bucky was silent for a moment, trying to piece together what that could mean. How could Natasha Romanoff be here with them? Were they dead? It wasn't the first time the thought floated through his head, but if this was an afterlife, it was a strange one.

and he didn't feel dead, either. Shit.

"We should probably regroup somewhere, then. See if we can find others on the way." He was stating the obvious, really. Exactly what Sam had already suggested. But Bucky's mind was spinning as he started theorizing.

"Do you think we can find Steve here? Or Stark?" It felt very much like a Stark kind of thing, traveling to other dimensions or times or whatever this was and pulling people along with them.

Sam nodded in agreement; the need for a bit of reconnaissance was all that had let him split up with Nat. This wasn't some normal day where they were free to take a few hours to catch up - they'd been thrown right into the middle of something, here. "Maybe. So far all of us were in Wakanda that day, we can't rule out that it's something Thanos related."

Though realistically he had mixed feelings about the idea of seeing either of the two again. Oh, on the whole he'd be thrilled to have Steve back, sure, but he couldn't guarantee to himself exactly how he'd react seeing him for the first time. And Stark, well, he had his own baggage there. He'd manage, though. He was a fucking professional and it wouldn't be the first time he'd been forced to work with someone he didn't like. "Might be best to head for the centre of town. It seems like the obvious place for a meet up, maybe we'll find more people there."

Bucky had worked with Sam long enough to realize when things were tense. He noticed the familiar signs and didn't say anything. He had his own reservations about having Stark around, but that could be something they dealt with when the time came. If it came.

Right now, recon was the first thing. He went into professional soldier mode and nodded, letting Sam take the lead.

"Yeah, but even if this is a Wakanda thing, you and I worked together way after that. Right?" He realized Sam might not remember- no. He was wearing the suit. He definitely had to remember. "What would that be if we were still in Wakanda or this was related?"

"Man, I don't even know. I'm grasping at straws, the whole idea will probably get blown to hell in the next five minutes the way today is going so far." That was a good question, though. He hadn't even gotten a handle on when Okoye might be from - he hadn't realised there was any reason to. And Natasha was obvious. But Bucky? He hadn't reacted to the uniform, so in theory he could have been from any time after then. He should have asked, really. The answer could have been... illustrative. Something held him back though. The thing he hadn't told anyone yet - except that he might have, if he and Bucky weren't from the same time. Maybe it was cowardly but he wasn't sure he wanted to know yet.

"I get it," Bucky admitted begrudgingly. Rather than arguing or making a comment, he followed along. Which probably should have spoken volumes about their relationship and when he'd come from.

"So, let's think. We have Okoye. Nat. Do you think we might see Steve?" He muttered, almost hoping they would. "Could it be something to do with Steve returning the stones? I mean, that was months ago, but...what if something went wrong?"

Nah. Then again, he had no idea how time travel or any of these things really worked, so who knew?

Months, okay, that was a timestamp. About the same time as him or a little before. Sam couldn't remember anything really significant happening in the last several weeks that make much of a difference, so that was one thing less to worry about.

Something wrong with the stones was always a concern though. "I wondered about the stones too. We were supposed to be in the Soul Stone the whole time or something, weren't we? Maybe it's the same sort of thing. It could have grabbed Natasha from Vormir. We know about the stones now, though, I don't know how anyone could use them without us getting any warning."

He cast a sidelong look at Bucky, pondering his next question. It wasn't something they'd ever talked about before, which might have seemed strange to someone on the outside. "What happens if we do see him?"

Bucky's mouth formed a line as he listened to Sam try to theorize what was happening. The Soul Stone. Vormir. All of it left him with a bad taste in his mouth and a nagging feeling in his gut.

"Yeah, so why does it sound like we all arrived here from different places and times? If it was Thanos...wouldn't we all be zapped around the same time at least? Maybe not Natasha, but the rest of us." He had his hands in his jacket pocket, that look of concentration on his face.

Then Sam asked about Steve. And Bucky frowned and considered his answer. "Guess we just cross that bridge when we get there..."

"Yeah, I don't know. Maybe if it was combined with the Time Stone somehow. Or it's got nothing to do with the stones at all and it's a whole different weird cosmic deal that we're going to have to pretend to understand." He kind of missed when everything was just Nazis, and wasn't that a sentiment.

"Sounds about right, yeah," he agreed, a little relieved at Bucky's lack of enthusiasm even though he'd been half-expecting it. "I guess it depends on the time thing, too. Not really sure which I'd prefer." Old Steve, who had all the same knowledge and context that they did, or the best friend he actually remembered but who hadn't been through the mess and chaos of the last couple of years.

Bucky scrunched his nose at the idea that this was a new thing. Hadn't they dealt with enough of this shit? Why did it suddenly have to be so complicated? Lord help him, it almost made him miss Hydra.

Okay, not really.

Bucky had to think about it, considering if Steve did show up, what might happen. On one hand, he missed his best friend. Steve was more than a friend to Bucky, he was a brother. Deeper than that. But on the other, he'd let go of him and made peace now. Steve had chosen to go after Peggy. He'd chosen to pursue that life he'd always dreamt of, and Bucky had told him it was alright. Mostly because one of them deserved to be happy, and God knew it wasn't Bucky anymore.

But that said, could he look Steve Rogers in the eye again knowing what he knew? Was he ready for that? Bucky shook his head. "We should focus on the mission."
