CHAOS, FOG and a PARADE
A STARTING IC/OOC EVENT
ARRIVAL OF THE NEW PEOPLE / THE PARADE The fog has cleared and you find yourself standing in the downtown streets of an unfamiliar town. And you’re not alone. There are dozens of people lining the sidewalks on either side of Main Street, cheering. At first you think they’re excited that the fog has finally lifted, but then you realize that a parade is heading towards you.

But it’s not just any normal parade. This is an all out affair that appears to involve most of the town and its residents. If you’re familiar with Earth history there might even be a kind of nostalgic vibe to the event. The closer you look at the parade, however, the more peculiar it appears. The marching band majorettes, for example, are waving flags with an image of a mutated lobster on it. And the drum corp is dressed like lobsters, banging away at the snare with hands sticking out of their large claws.

There’s a float that rolls by afterwards featuring a teenage girl in a bright pink dress sitting atop a decorative throne. She waves to everyone on the side of the street. “Wow! The pig farm sure crowned a beauty for the pageant this year!” one of the locals says. Sure enough, around the throne are four large swine, devouring slop at the girl’s feet.

A bright blue Cadillac slowly drives after the float. The logo for Dolan’s Auto Shop is written on the side and a man with a wide smile honks toots on the horn which lets out an eerie jingle. After that a group of mimes dance around the crowd. One in front holds up a sign for The Tommyknocker Theatre Troupe.

And so on.

Everyone you try to talk to is friendly. The street vendors offer you free hotdogs and ice cream.

All of it is completely normal.

But then why does it make you feel so uneasy?

NOTES You know the drill! Get in the comments! (Insert Brennan Lee Mulligan gif here.)

If you don't know the drill, that's okay! IC/OOC events can be a little overwhelming when just starting out. I wrote an essay about it here if you want to know what's up.

SPECIAL THANKS Round of applause to our very own Marty McChaa for writing up this lovely event for us and finding the images.

The coding can be found at Tess's patreon if you want to have it on hand for your very own. ♥ We're Tess stans here.

"New York? The city?" Not that Hange had ever actually seen it, but she had at least read about it while she was at the Compound. She wasn't sure what it had actually looked like, but she had a feeling this wasn't it.

"Are you sure? I thought it would be bigger..." She was glancing at the passing parade, watching how happy everyone seemed then back to the man with some confusion on her face.

"This is definitely not where I'm supposed to be right now."

"I've never been there."

But they had a point. New York was America's Tokyo and Kazuma couldn't think of a part of Tokyo that looked like this. He furrowed his brow "So... maybe California?" That's part of America too."

"Where are you from?"

"Me either," Hange admitted and tried to wrap her head around it. California? No. She had no idea what that place was. Shaking her head, she realized she needed to focus on different questions.

"Uh, originally or just before I wound up here? Where are you from??"

"I guess whichever one's more your hometown?" Kazuma went to reach for a card from his pocket before realizing his hands were full, one from the bag of donuts and the other with the sausage sandwich, so he did the only reasonable thing and ate the entire hotdog in one bite.

And the look that crossed his face showed he immediately regretted that move. The bun was overbaked and riddled with chemical. Probably a week old and made with a margarine and flavorless flour. He felt like a tumbleweed being blown over a dust filled prairie in a western and for a moment, that read in his face.

Kazuma forced himself to swallowed. He was parched for water. But instead fumbled, pulling out a pink and white checkered business card that read:

東一真
パン職人
PANTASIA
東京南支店

"I um. Live in South Tokyo. But I'm from Nigata Prefecture."

The guy's eating prowess reminded Hange of Sasha. She could probably beat Kazuma in an eating contest, but maybe it would be a close match? Shaking it off, Hange took the card and looked it over, staring at the strange language at first before nodding and trying to place the name he mentioned.

Tokyo. No, again, it was all unfamiliar to them.

"Sorry, I think...well, I think wherever I'm from is likely very different from your world. I mean, we still have humans. The technology seemed to be a little out of date, but there were many things that were the same- just not the cities." Hange had gotten used to this, at least. It was no longer so strange to meet people from entirely different dimensions.

Okay, they were almost used to it.

"So, you're not from the Agency, but you're here. I wonder..." They were pondering how it was all possible, and if the mist had anything to do with it.

"That's alright! New places mean new experience, new friends, new breads..." He wasn't going to derail the conversation just yet, but Kazuma was very curious about this new world concept. He was sorely tempted to derail the conversation.

"Which agency?" Kazuma knew Kawachi had talked about a jobs agency after their initial examination at Pantasia, but he had never heard of an Agency that would send you to another world. Maybe JAXA. "I had this lobster yeast roll made with a marine yeast and I guess it made me think of a place kind of like this. I don't know why I'm here though still. Because it was also kind of an airy dough."

Hange couldn't help but crack a smile at the bread comment. It almost felt like home and talking to some of the recruits. Definitely like Sasha. It was almost comforting how innocent it was, but then it was back to business.

"Nevermind that. Lots to explain and I'm not sure if this is the time or place, especially when we should figure out where we are first and find a safe place to have this conversation." In this crowd didn't seem quite right.

"Huh. Well, I don't really know what a lobster is, but...that's alright. Where should we go next, do you think?"

"Lobsters are the ... fish I guess that they're having a parade for. They live in the ocean at least." Kazuma had never really thought about it. Crabs and lobsters and the like had to be fish, even if they didn't look like them."

"My sister said if I'm ever lost I should go to the police. But I don't think we can if we don't have a passport..." That was a problem he thought. Kazuma remembered that when they went to Monaco, but Kawachi had said he'd keep his documents. And maybe that been a bad plan, not that Kazuma had intended to wind up in America from a baking competition. "So maybe.... a cafe?"

The ocean. She nodded as if she understood while she was trying to piece things together. The big body of water next to the compound on maps, not that she'd ever really had a chance to see it before all of this. She knew it existed, but she hadn't visited it herself and now there were people celebrating some sort of creature from there. Yup. Very normal.

A cafe. That she knew. She nodded. "That would do, I think. Maybe we will run into others on the way?" There had to be others, didn't there?
