LJ: the removed interests are now back on the "most popular" list

See: http://community.livejournal.com/the_lj_herald/80784.html

And read comments. Apparently, all the edited-out popular interests have returned - Sex, Boys, Guys, Girls, Fanfiction, Yaoi, Hardcore, Porn, Bondage, Faeries, Pain, Depression, and Bisexuality are all back on the Most Popular list.

Comments

Just out of curiousity, why would faeries be banned as an interest? I'm pretty sure I had that listed as an interest at one point.
Because it could mean either flamboyant gay men or the mythological creature. So they blanket excluded it.
Ugh, that's so stupid. God, LJ sucks.
Agreed.
i wonder why they'd get rid of "boys" and "girls" in the first place...

and faeries is just mind boggling o_O
Because girls and boys may be pedophile code words.

And fairies I explained above.}:)
code words

lmao. Now that brings back some memories: "beside, you use code words" - lj abuse.

(I'm thinking that was their thinking on faeries, for sure - they's little, and magical too - like tinkerbell, e.g.)
You know, I asked my husband who has a computer programming degree, how you *accidentally* drop in a line of code that is exactingly specific in it's excluding of certain search terms.

His response?

You can't. Not accidentally.

This was deliberate and they know it. They were hoping *we* wouldn't notice.
ugh.... yeah you know it kind of insults me that they would feel the need to exclude those terms when the sexual connotation actually had to be explained to me. not everyone is as perverted as they'd like to think. jesus christ >:^[ it just makes THEM look bad.
Yes, it wasn't an accident. They had to add all those terms to a file containing keywords to exclude from the top interests output. That file, apparently called INTERESTS_KW_FILTER, can't be changed by "mistake."
Marta answered RM about the 'mistake' here.

Now let's see what SUP/LJ has to say about it. I'm betting on another corporatespeak explanation.
I'm curious if others who've been actively posting in the news or ljspeaks also received hits from the New York Times this morning.
How would one know?
lj.toys.org.uk and other hit counters will give a list of hits.
Why the NY Times?
I got 5. 3 on LJ, and 2 here. At about 9am this morning.

I've never seen that IP before, or any NYTs IP addy. Could be a coincidence, but I kind of wonder at the timing of LJ's fixing the mistake.
Why would they get rid of depression? How stupid!
As if we didn't feel isolated enough...
EXACTLY. I really hate how a lot of people want to sweep us under the rug and act like we are not allowed to be depressed, as if we chose it.
...Like we chose to be gay? [/snark]
Oh now, of COURSE you can't be gay on Livejournal. It would be against whatever freakish Christian extremist company that was that caused the whole strikethrough last year.
You can take the interests back, but you sure as hell can't take back the homophobic sentiment.
